Prop. 12 Verus RPI

By Jim Dallas

I'm working on an atlas entry for Props. 3 and 12. Here is a map which compares the percentage voting "FOR" Proposition 12 to the percentage voting for the GOP top-of-the-ticket candidate (e.g. Sen. John Cornyn) in 2002.

Red counties underperformed their RPI (or outperformed their DPI, depending on how you figure). Green counties overperformed their RPI/underperformed their DPI.

Generally, East and North Texas counties were more anti-12, and South and West Texas counties were more pro-12.

Jim, I used the Court of Criminal Appeals (place 2 - see below thread) race as the standard of DPI/RPI. I felt like it was the best barometer of measuring it. I'd argue that Kirk ran ahead of the DPI in Dallas and much of south Texas while he ran behind it in much of rural east Texas.. that's unscientific though, just what I remember. Still, great graph... I'm looking forward to more...

Good point. Usually you use a bottom-of-the-ticket race to measure partisanship because then party is usually the most significant voting cue.

However, I didn't have the numbers immediately available, so I simply used the top numbers instead.

Thanks for the atlases! I would like to make one suggestion, however. I would reccomend that you not use a red to green spectrum, if possible. Red/Green color blindness is the most common type, and some readers may have difficulty with maps using those hues. Thanks
