What Jim Dunnam Should Be Doing Right Know

by: pdr

Wed Nov 08, 2006 at 10:30 AM CST

By picking up 4-5 seats in the State House, Dems are in a good position to make a real speakers race.

1) Call every single Dem and get a commitment to vote as a block. (don't quite know what should happen with Senfronia, and some won't be gotten).
2) Take that number and call whichever Republican the Dems would most like to be speaker and who could round up the necessary 8 votes or so
3) Say I can give you XX votes for Speaker if you give us these seats at the table including several key chairmanships.

While this may seem like an obvious checklist, Tom Craddick is currently calling folks like Diane Patrick (moderate republican) and Sylvester Turner (craddick democrat) and having major players do the same indicating that they need to commmit now to Craddick and/or lose out big.

This next Speaker of the House doesn't have to be Tom Craddick if Democratic leaders and moderate Republicans hustle to change and/or get commitments in the next 24 hours.

Just some thoughts.

Democrat Gets Support from Pro-Life PAC....

Democrat Gets Endorsement of Pro-Life PAC....Thank God The Republican Will Win.

From QR:

In the March primaries, the race in House District 71 to replace retiring state Rep. Bob Hunter (R-Abilene) became one of the marquee contests for the moderate faction of the Republican Party. Susan King, a nurse and Abilene school board president, eventually scored a tightly fought runoff victory over social conservative Kevin Christian.

This week, the Texas Right to Life PAC endorsed King’s opponent, Democratic nominee Mel Hailey. The Democrat in the race is a member of the socially conservative Church of Christ and teaches at the church-affiliated Abilene Christian University. King is a Presbyterian....

Black said that his group does endorse Democrats, albeit much less often than it endorses Republicans. He said that his PAC has endorsed Dora Olivo (D-Rosenberg), Armando "Mando" Martinez (D-Weslaco) and Juan Escobar (D-Kingsville). In addition, Texas Right to Life has certified Aaron Peña (D-Edinburg), Inocente "Chente" Quintanilla (D-Tornillo), SD 7 candidate Michael Kubosh and HD 38 candidate Eddie Lucio III.

Its sad to say that I am ecstatic that Mel Hailey has no chance of winning in the Abilene district.  I don't think Democrats need fundamentalists who will throw the rights of women out the door either out of true belief or to get the votes of those who believe oppression is God's way.

As for the other Democrats supported by Texas Right to Life, to put it mildly, they haven't done shit in office and it won't hurt anyone if they get kicked out in the next primary.
