Rampant Free Market Ideology Has Put the Idea of a Mixed Economy 'on the Rocks'
The antidote is a bar crawl to promote the Keynesian model of mixed economics with an original pomegranate juice and vodka cocktail dubbed the Mixed Economy. The bar crawl will visit three local establishments, the Volstead Lounge, the Yellow Jacket Social Club, and Cheer Up Charlies on Saturday, July 23rd from 10 am - 2 pm.
The bars all added the Mixed Economy to their menus this summer as part of the Identity Project, an art event in June that explored new ways of marketing ideas and social issues. The Mixed Economy was submitted to the show by iLoveMikeLitt, a local arts & culture group.
The socially-minded drink aims to spur discussion and increase support for Keynesian thought. Bar crawlers will receive Mixed Economy recipe cards with info on both the drink and economic model.
The cards feature a picture of economist John Maynard Keynes and an explanation by Elba K. Brown-Collier, a retired professor of economics in Austin. "If markets and individual actions alone don't produce the results we want as a society, we can take collective action through institutions like government to make adjustments. That's the idea behind a mixed economy," explains Brown-Collier.
Now, promoting an economy that works for everyone is as easy as mixing vodka and pomegranate juice.
"Maybe one day the Mixed Economy will join the ranks of other popular drinks such as the Cape Cod and the Greyhound. People will be talking about and enjoying a mixed economy everywhere!" said Cheer Up Charlies owner Tamara.
