You're Invited: Celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade at University of Texas at Austin

I am posting this on behalf of Sara Cleveland. Sara is executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Texas.

Later this month, Americans will mark the 35th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade landmark decision... and tonight, NARAL Pro-Choice Texas and NARAL Pro-Choice America will mark this anniversary with a major speech in Austin, Texas - the state where Roe originated!

Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, will deliver a speech on the importance of the future of the pro-choice movement tonight: Thursday, January 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Quick Refresher: The landmark Court decision, Roe v. Wade, established a constitutional right to privacy that includes women's access to safe, legal abortion.

So why is the anniversary so important this year, as opposed to others?  Well, as this anniversary coincides with the 2008 presidential elections, we know the best way to protect a woman's right to choose for future generations is to elect pro-choice leaders who share these values.

Nancy's address will talk about the need to make sure all Americans see a place for themselves in the conversation over a women's right to choose.  It makes sense for this call to action to take place in Texas, where the Roe case originated.  You will see generations of pro-choice supporters and hear from Nancy about the importance of uniting behind our common goal of protecting women's freedom and privacy to ensure future celebrations of Roe v. Wade.

This is truly a crucial time in the history of Roe v. Wade.

In attendance will be the amazing Sarah Weddington, the attorney who argued the case before the Supreme Court at age 26 ! We are delighted to have her in attendance and we are also thankful to the university's Center for Women's & Gender Studies, along with other campus groups, who are cosponsoring the event.

Convinced yet?

Here at NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, we are also using this landmark speech to help us commemorate our 30th anniversary.  So please, if you live near that Austin area, I sincerely hope you will join us.  Here is the information:

Thompson Conference Center, University of Texas at Austin
