Help the Alabama-Coushatta and Tigua Indian Tribes

by: michaelapodaca

I usually don't post something, and since I know some of you (in the Democratic Blogospher) are not in the best of terms with State Rep. Norma Chavez, however, there is a very important bill that she is sponsoring (with other house members) that will come up tomorrow.  HB 10 would be the first step in allowing the few (well three) Indian tribes in Texas re-open their casinos and entertainment centers for their right to self-determination. This issue is not about gambling per say, but it is allowing our tribes provide for themselves by whatever means necessary.  In my opinion, and to be blunt, we already took their land, why continue to block opportunity to our first Americans?

In addition, unlike corporate businesses who do not pay their fair share in taxes in Texas, allowing our Indian tribes re-open their casinos will provide, not only benefits for their own people, but for the rest of Texas with additional money for the TEXAS Grants system, as what HB 10 calls for.

Living here in El Paso, we were able to see the wonders of what Speaking Rock did for the Tribe.  For the first time, all their members had some form of heath insurance, a decent home, education facilities, and were putting the pieces back together of their culture and history.  Cornyn, Abramoff, DeLay, and other republican leaders have done such a tragic disservice to our Tribes in Texas and this is one step to correct their damage.

Please, I ask you to consider calling your state rep and ask them to support HB 10.

The rest of the message by Rep. Chavez and  Reps. Pena, F. Brown, Castro and Haggerty is after the break

Texas Young Democrats Believe at TYD 2006

( - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

The 74th annual Texas Young Democrats ended earlier today and I am proud that this was one of the largest conventions to date.  Nearly 200 Young Democrats from the state of Texas attended from many different areas of the state.  One item that was incredible was the number of new high school chapters from Houston, College Station, and Hildago county that attended.  We had over 7 new chapters that had never been recognized and I'm proud for this achievement.

From the West Texas Town of El Paso....

Since El Paso was not on the top of the BOR radar, I'll give you my fellow Texans an update, an overview, and my thoughts over our elections in the Sun City.

I've been meaning to do this for a month now, yet have not had the time to sit down and piss a couple people off here locally.  However, now that I can since the election are over, let me give a rundown.

Going through the races:

HD 75: Chente still is liked by his gente (for you non Spanish speakers- people)... I guess.  Even with trying to relax animal abuse laws and try to disenfranchise over 70,000 voters for some of his farmer friends, awarded the used furniture award by Texas Monthly, and (sadly I cant find the picture) likes to lounge around while breaking quorum, he still wins with 55% of the vote.  I do think Gandara and Olague could have done more if they would have stopped fighting between themselves and targeted more on Chente, this would have been a different outcome. He's going back to Austin, so use him as a bookcase or something.

HD 76: Norma just chewed up, spit out, stomped on, kicked, kicked twice, and kicked a third time to Marty Reyes.  I never did doubt Norma was not going to lose, but I never would think that Norma would get 70%. It shows that hard work gets you places, and I know Norma is a fighter and her district loves her. There were NO precincts that Marty even got close to Norma.

Note to Slivestre Reyes and Co.: Your days are numbered.

Norma to Marty: WHO's YOUR DADDY!

HD 78 on the GOP Side: Haggerty edges O'Donnell by a 100 votes in the first REAL GOP election seen since I was born (or can remember since I was born in 1981).  Haggerty is a good guy and he does look out for El Paso even when his party does not favor our city.  There are at least 3098 Republicans that figured that out. My wish was for the Craddick Mafia to take him out so that, in November, we could have made a message focusing how the Texas GOP Leadership is so out of touch with El Paso, they had to put in a right wing crazy like O'Donnell.  Sadly I'll have to go to another corner of the state for this message - wait I forgot we have Dee Margo in the General Election against Senator Shapleigh! Whoo Hoo!.

Local Races:
County Judge - Out of the 6 contenders, who were not the most impressive of this election cycle, we have two candidates: one who I like but sometimes wonder what her intent is (because she likes to play leap frog in public offices) - and the other I JUST CAN'T STAND - I SHRIEK WHEN HE SPEAKS! Please Please Please vote for Barbara!

County Commish 1,2:
Probably the best fight of the Runoffs are going to be in the County Commissioners.  You have in District 1 a rematch of Ex City Council members who've been kicked off before. It will be an interesting match because Larry has experience and name recognition.  Luis has part of this district back from his city council days. This could be a Larry Medina/Luis Sariana comeback!

The matchup that will pack the biggest punch is Betti Flores vs. Veronica Escobar.  This race has already gotten ugly with a secret person passing out anti-Calballero stuff (although Calballero was soooo 4 years ago) and keeps saying that a vote for Escobar raises Taxes and such. However, there are people who love Betty, even if she forgets to report more than $10,000 in donations.  Veronica leads currently and she'll have to keep fighting if she wants to win.

Finally a note on the Gammage and Bell election here in El Paso.  I made a comment today in the El Paso Times which pretty much sums up what we have all said: "'Chris will have to do a much better job of coming to El Paso,' Apodaca said, adding that he hopes to see more charisma from the former radio reporter and lawyer."

If you note, Chirs Bell won El Paso with 47% and Bob Gammage 40%, probably Bob's best showing (I compare some counties below).  Bob came here three times, spent some time with El Paso Democrats, and won their support. Chris came to El Paso once (technically twice, but the other was for the Mexican American Democrats Endorsement Convention), if Gammage had a little more time, maybe, just maybe Bell would have lost.  It's over now and I support Chris Bell.

Chris, come more to El Paso! We love Democrats and if we are going make sure you win El Paso, we need you to visit here and on the border!

Bell - Gammage
Travis: 57% - 37%
Dallas: 65% - 22%
Bexar: 62% - 25%
Tarrant: 61% - 30%
El Paso: 47% - 40%
