Doggett Re-Election Campaign Seeking Interns and Volunteers

by: jwwalthall

Wed Aug 09, 2006 at 00:18 AM CDT

( - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

Lloyd Doggett for CongressThe Lloyd Doggett Re-Election Campaign is seeking volunteers and interns that can assist Congressman Doggett and the campaign staff with a range of responsibilities. Join our team and show the Republicans how hard we Texas Democrats fight and persevere despite their partisan redistricting efforts.

Volunteers are needed to help with mailings, phone banks, canvassing, office/computer needs, and other necessary tasks. Interns would work directly with all levels of campaign staff on  important tasks and would receive invaluable experience on a US Congressional race. As an intern, you would need to be able to commit 15-20 hours a week until the election. If you are interested in either opportunity, please e-mail me at john@votedoggett.com with your interests, availability, or any questions you may have. What no one can accomplish alone, we can achieve together.

The new Congressional District 25 includes Travis, Hays, Bastrop, Caldwell, Fayette, Gonzales, Colorado, and Lavaca counties.

Google Maps and Political Contributions

by: jwwalthall

Mon Jun 12, 2006 at 06:23 PM CDT

In news other than the State Convention...

A friend recently forwarded me a link to a website that links a public database of political donations with Google Maps.

I searched 78705, the zip near campus in Austin, and unfortuately it didn't list my donation to the DNC.  Then I read the notes from the creator:
--Rrealize that due to limitations in the geocoding as well as my data source this system does NOT work very well for zip codes representing a small population and contributions under $200 are not required to be present in the public databases.
--My data source is limited to contributions only to the two major parties during the 2004 Presidential election.

Still quite a good use of Google Maps indeed!

Pushing Back Against Executive Power

by: jwwalthall

(We missed a BOR milestone! The following journal entry was the 1,000th entry on the new BOR website. Thanks to all those who have helped us keep up on issues in the Journals, and we look forward to the next 1,000 posts! - promoted by Phillip Martin)

This week the board of the American Bar Association unanimously voted to create a task force to investigate the use of presidential signing statements and what effect they have on the balance between executive and congressional powers.

Reportedly, President Bush has used this executive priviledge more than all past presidents combined.  Bush 41 issued 232 signing statements in his four years in office, and Clinton issued 140 in his eight years.  Bush 43, however, has issued more than 500 statements challenging more than 750 bills passed by Congress...already.  Interestingly, President Bush is also the first president since the 1800's who has yet to veto a bill.
