Sen. Uresti needs a primary opponent (and maybe some others do too)

by: godmother

Wed Feb 16, 2011 at 06:21 PM CST

What with the Dan Patrick's sonogram bill probably hitting the Senate floor tomorrow and Texas women taking yet another step back towards the bad old days, some Dem. State Senators are certainly playing it coy with their constituents and their colleagues.

Sen. Carlos Uresti's office got upwards to 150 calls from constituents yesterday urging him to stand with his colleagues against SB 16.  He's received calls from Dem. leaders from all over the state.  Sen. Mario Gallegos asked him personally to block SB 16 this week so he could be at the hospital when his daughter gave birth to a new grandbaby.

Uresti sought out the  support of the Planned Parenthood's C4 Action Fund in his district.  He's indicated he was extremely uncomfortable with the gross over-reaching by Sen. Patrick in SB 16.

Is he standing with his constituents?  Is he keeping his word?  Looks like no.

Redistricting is coming around and he's up in 2012.  I don't think you even need to live in the district to run in the primary the first election after redistricting.  Nonetheless the good people of Sen. Dist. 19 deserve better than this weasel posing as a Dem. State Sen.  There are women in this state that will work for a real Democrat in the primary.

Am I angry?  You bet I am.

Texas Swift Boater Perry makes national blog mention for racebaiting in HD race

by: godmother

Wed Oct 22, 2008 at 01:06 PM CDT

Huffington Post posted a story that links to Texas' own Glen Smith's blog.  Glen's piece is about Swift Boater Bob Perry's direct mail piece that shows Dem. Candidate Joel Redmond who is running for Texas HD 144 surrounded by minority legislators with the caption "Birds of a feather flock together."

Sarah Weddington implores support of Mincberg in Harris County Judge race. It's important.

by: godmother

Tue Oct 21, 2008 at 11:26 AM CDT

Readers might be interested in this email I received from Sarah Weddington about the Harris County Judge race.

Dear Friend,

You know how politically active I am and how intensely involved I am
regarding issues that impact woman's health and reproductive rights.
Typically I focus on federal or state races in this regard. However,
there is a particular Harris County race that we need to pay very
close attention to as well.

The Harris County Judge is the equivalent of the "Mayor of Harris
County". For example, the Harris County Judge oversees the Harris
County Hospital District. The person is this position can have a
tremendous impact upon woman's health concerns locally.

David Mincberg is currently running for the position of Harris County
Judge. He is a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin School of
Law. He is a long-time friend of our issues and is a past board member
of Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas.

His opponent Ed Emmett is the polar opposite. His record when he
served in the Texas House of Representatives shows that he twice voted
to eliminate family planning funding.  Had either measure passed it
would have cut funds to Planned Parenthood. He also failed to support
an amendment providing that parental consent for abortion would not be
necessary for a teenager who had been raped and voted to require
parental consent in cases of incest.

Access to appropriate woman's health care in Harris County should not
be subject to someone with knee-jerk approval of the Texas Republican
Party platform. (See excerpts from that platform I've attached FYI.)
Emmett hasn't been publicly discussing his views on choice much; some
even think choice is not a big issue for him. I am sending this email
because in many ways Emmett is no different on our issues than the
most vocal of opponents. And there is a great candidate also in that
race.

David Mincberg provides us a viable option to ensure woman's health
and reproductive rights in Harris County. We need to get him elected.

Please make a donation by visiting www.mincbergforcountyjudge.com.
Forward this email to as many of your friends as you can and urge them
to support Mincberg.

Early voting begins soon.  Please use the address in the prior
paragraph to contact his campaign if you have any questions.

Thanks in advance for your help. It is vitally important that we make
2008 a great year for the choice community!

R's in CD-22 are starting to line up.

by: godmother

Fri Jul 13, 2007 at 04:17 PM CDT

Rumors have been confirmed that Harris County Family District Court Judge Jim Squier will resign his bench to run in the Republican primary against Congressman Nick Lampson.

If the Republican party urged Jim Squier to run, which it is said they did, they must be pretty sick of Shelly Sekula Gibbs already.  Shelly is a ubiquitous presence all over CD-22 at public events indicating that she wants "her" seat back, even if she only held it for 45 days.

And when Squier resigns his bench, that will put the 312th District Court on the ballot for Nov. 08.  Yipeeeee!!! another bench for the D's to take in Harris County next year.  Democrats will start lining up for that race quickly, I predict, and they better start getting their petitions in order soon.

In the meantime, good luck to Nick.  Jim Squier has very little name ID in the District, although he is clearly known to some Republicans.  If he presided over your divorce you might know his name, especially if he made a comment about his personal religious beliefs from the bench, which he has been known to do.

Clinic violence...what do you expect?

by: godmother

Thu Apr 26, 2007 at 03:59 PM CDT

"Package at women's health clinic had an explosive powder, sources say" Austin American Statesman, April 26, 2007. http://www.statesman...

I suspect this incident and the anticipated news conference are the reasons why Sen. Shapiro looked so nervous moments ago when she quickly laid out SB 785.  This bill contains new and improved ways for violent whackos to identify doctors who perform abortions and judges who grant permission to minors to obtain abortions.

Their hypocrisy is breathtaking

(Telling it like it is. - promoted by Burnt Orange Report)

Having sat through just the first 5 1/2 hours of the House State Affairs Committee hearing on April 2nd (out of approximately 11 hours) I feel I am qualified to make some comments here.

I heard every conceivable reason why abortion should be illegal from those testifying on Monday night, including blaming abortion rights for the anticipated failure of the Social Security system ("if all those babies had been born, they would be contributing to social security and then I could expect to get my payments when I turn 65").
