It pains me to admit it, but I’m afraid that I have to agree with Mitt Romney. The Reverend Al Sharpton said the wrong thing, whether it was meant in the context that it was said or not, Sharpton was wrong.
On Monday May 7, 2007, Al Sharpton had a debate at the New York Public Library on religion and politics with atheist author Christopher Hitchens.During the debate Sharpton said,
"As for the one Mormon running for office, those that really believe in God will defeat him anyway, so don't worry about that. That's a temporary situation." (Watch video)
Sharpton has since said that the quote was taken out of context, and that he was responding to an attack by Hitchens. I’m sorry, but I don’t see any other context except for what was said. There is only one Mormon running for president at the moment and that is Mitt Romney. I don’t know whom Sharpton is talking about when he says, “those that really believe in God,” but it insinuates that Romney does not believe in God. Last time I checked The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) believe in God. They may have different religious practices then what the Reverend Sharpton believes in but they do believe in God.
This should be a time of celebration. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is in the process of being constructed on the National Mall in Washington, DC. It is a well-deserved honor, and a long overdue honor for one of the greatest Americans, in my opinion, to have lived during my lifetime. But for some reason the bureaucrats of this country can’t even get this simple honor right.
First off, the granite being used for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial was purchased from China. My first guess would be that it had to do with price of the granite, but it has been reported that several American contractors have offered to sell the granite for the memorial at cost. Why look to China to supply the granite instead of helping our own economy? Why would we be helping out the Chinese economy instead of our own?
I was sitting around today, and decided to look up the bills that Kelly Hancock, State Representative for Texas State District 91, had authored. I really didn’t expect much. He is a freshman Representative who took a lot of special interest money from insurance and utility companies during his 2006 campaign.
But two House Bills, authored by Mr. Hancock, were so self-serving even I was shocked that he would stoop this low. HB 1540 calls for excused absences, for elementary and secondary students, for trips to the Texas State Capitol or a State Park. The student would need to write a paper about his/her experience. This bill came about due to Mr. Hancock’s swearing-in ceremony. He brought his family, including his daughter, along for the ceremony. I applaud him for that. She should be there to see her father become a State Representative. But, he then wanted the absence excused by the school, which is not allowed by the Texas State Code. So, to solve this problem, Mr. Hancock decides to submit a new bill to fix his problem.
That was nothing compared to HR 863. This resolution calls for the Texas State House to honor the “milestone” of Kelly and Robin Hancock’s 20th wedding anniversary. It then goes on to give a short biography of their lives together. I know that I don’t vote for my elected officials to find ways to honor themselves. If another House member had submitted this honor for the Hancocks, I could understand that. To submit a resolution to honor himself is downright pompous and conceited. Will Mr. Hancock honor the “milestone” of my 20th wedding anniversary in a couple of years? Aren’t there enough “real” issues in Texas to deal with, such as education, property taxes, insurance reform, transportation, etc..
Mr. Hancock appears to be using the State Legislature as a personal toy, rather than representing his constituents in District 91. I hope that voters in his district remember this in 2008. We need a representative who cares about District 91 more then putting himself on a pedestal.
It is time for Democrats all over Texas to put away their differences and unite, as one, behind the Democratic Party. With the Presidential Primary campaign already in full force, it is imperative that all Democrats keep things in perspective. Yes, there is a campaign against other Democrats, but what is our ultimate goal?
Democrats have a history of beating each other up during the Primary season. By the time the General Election campaign starts, all of the Republican’s ammunition came from Democrats themselves. On top of that, there are negative emotions between Democrats who were supporting opposing candidates.
I am asking that we not allow this to happen this time around. This is the most important Presidential Election to happen in a lifetime, and Democrats should not be battling among themselves. I encourage you to go out and support a Democratic candidate of your choice. Go out and get involved. Do everything you can to help get your favorite Presidential candidate elected….but keep it positive.
Do not spend time bashing the opponents. It is counterproductive to the Democratic Party. First off, anything negative said about a Democratic candidate WILL be used against that candidate if he/she is nominated. It will also incite negative emotions towards the offender and candidate, which we Democrats can not afford….especially in Texas.
I want to see us go a step further. I want all Democrats to attend events for ALL the Presidential candidates that may take place around your neighborhood. Do this even if you are working on a campaign for a specific candidate. We need to show Democratic Solidarity! We need 20,000 people to show up at all rallies. If we have large rallies, for every Democratic candidate, it shows those who don’t think that their vote counts that there are other Democrats who feel the same way as they do. If we all show up to meetings for every Democratic candidate, the press will pick up on it. A meeting with 100 attendees will draw a lot more attention then one with 20 attendees. But, it will take all Democrats to work as a TEAM.
We also need to hold off on contributing all of our resources, and money, towards the candidates we support. Some of these resources need to go towards our local Democratic Party and our local area grassroots clubs. The local Democratic Party activists are the backbone of political campaigns. This is especially true in Texas. It is these grassroots organizations that get candidates elected in Texas. But they need money to succeed. So, I’m asking that you take some of the contributions that you might give to your preferred candidate and give it to your local Party or Democratic Club. They have our long-range goals in site….a Democrat in the White House.
Democrats, let’s unite as one. Remember what our TRUE goal is. If we all work together, and as a team, we will be triumphant.
