So the Supreme Court threw out Henry Bonilla's (R) district. Great. Maybe next time the GOP will watch their P's and Q's when it comes to messing with the Voting Rights Act.
We don't know what the next map will look like, or even when it will take effect. Will the legislators do what they did in 1996, and draw it up this summer, having a new map for November, or not have a new map until 2008?
As a non-Texan, I'd love you Texans to give some thoughts. Obviously, neither Bonilla nor Henry Cuellar wants Webb County to be unified in the same district; they don't want to face off again in another tough race as in 2002. But some people in the legislature, like Richard Raymond, will no doubt pushed for Laredo being in one district, as the Court encouraged. So it seems to me that we are either looking at another Cuellar/Bonilla showdown (likely a tossup race) or a fairly easy Bonilla reelection with just a slightly less Republican seat, and with Cuellar in his own district.
I know little about the situation, but am really curious. Please give your thoughts. First of all, do they wait till '08 or do it now? And second, do they reunite Webb County or choose instead to give Bonilla some more favorable territory in San Antonio?
