The Right Goes Ballistic. Again

by: Libby Shaw

Fri Sep 04, 2009 at 04:34 PM CDT

Gee whiz.   I sure hope, for their own sorry sakes, right wing Republicans have decent health care coverage.  I mean, at the rate at which they are blowing fuses and blood vessels over literally everything proposed by President Obama, good health care coverage sure is necessary for one's survival in avoiding and overcoming strokes and heart attacks.

OK, so the latest hysteria emanating from the right has to do with a speech President Obama will make to school children about staying in school, working hard to achieve good grades and taking personal responsibility for one's actions.  This should be music to a parent's ears, especially in Texas where we have the highest number of school dropouts and our schools rank second to last nationwide.

But oh no, au contraire and God forbid, should a child work hard to stay in school, earn top notch grades, graduate with honors and gain acceptance in a top tier university.

It seems that the right has plenty of problems with staying in school, at least according to comments posted by on-line readers of the The Houston Chronicle.

Some object to Obama speech to students

According to the right President Obama will "indoctrinate" and "brain wash" students.

About?

Getting good grades?   Taking responsibility?

No one howled when President G.W. Bush read to school children on the day our nation was horribly and ruthlessly attacked.

Nick Anderson, the Houston Chronicle, 9/3/09.

And where were these very same wingnuts when  President George H.W. Bush spoke to school children at the eve of his campaign in 1992?

I guess a little ol' indoctrination and spin is harmless when it comes from a really rich white guy.

How Accurate Is The Organic-Spontaneous-Populist-Grassroots Tea Party Narrative?

by: Josh Berthume

Tue Sep 01, 2009 at 09:49 AM CDT

On April 15, a series of protests were held across the country against President Obama's budget measures and economic recovery policies. More specifically, these protests were regionally organized, thematic demonstrations modeled - loosely, at best - on the Boston Tea Party predating the American Revolution.

In 1773, colonials in Massachusetts were angered by the British Parliament's Tea Act. Among other things, they viewed it as an affront to their constitutional right to only be taxed by their elected representatives. They protested the Tea Act by taking three shiploads of tea that Boston's Royal Governor Thomas Hutchison refused to return to Britain and dumping them into Boston Harbor.

The various tea-themed activities during the protests of this past April were largely symbolic, a misread historical metaphor used as a shared rallying point. Most of the actual protesting was done via speech and sign and other normal demonstration fare rather than through the destruction of actual tea.

This year's Tea Party-Goers had two advantages that the colonists lacked in organizing their protests: online organizing and Fox News. How much each contributed to attendance at the day's events is a matter for debate.

The Incredible Hypocrisy of Glenn Beck (*Updated*) w/New Videos

by: Elsbeth

Sat Aug 22, 2009 at 02:34 PM CDT

In case you missed it...I know I almost did. Wait 28 seconds for the ad to play.

Just 16 months ago Glenn Beck was disgusted with our health care system while apparently recovering from hemorrhoid surgery.

Glenn Beck's Video In His Own Words (January 3, 2008)~

No wonder he went on hiatus this week.

Even so, I betcha he's still in the running for Rick Perry's next "Honorary Texan."

I cry everytime I see this amazing video ~

*Update*

Speaking of Honorary Texans (as they are right now on the Big Orange)...our most recent honoree, Mr. Sean Hannity, is proof positive that good solid hypocrisy can only improve Glenn Beck's chances for getting this award:

Cornyn, Sessions & Republicans Stoke Fear & Anger on Health Care

by: Phillip Martin

Thu Aug 06, 2009 at 03:18 PM CDT

Death threats. Nazi signs. Hanging a Congressman in effigy. Welcome to the Tea Party.

It's no secret -- Republicans want health care to fail. Across the country, Republican leaders are encouraging their supporters to be afraid and be angry. Texas Senator John Cornyn straight-out said as much in The Hill:

"Fear, I would say, precedes anger, and I think there are a lot of people who tell me they are scared of what they see coming out of Washington in terms of spending and the debt and muscular federal intervention on everything from financial institutions to healthcare,” Cornyn said. “It’s almost like a part of the grieving process.” [...]

“No one would have ever thought six months ago we would be where we are today. I see real opportunities for us,” Cornyn said at a meeting with reporters. “2010 did not look like it was going to be a particularly friendly year for us.”

Two right-wing Republican groups, Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks, are stoking the flames by encouraging their volunteers to act out in town halls:

  • Artificially Inflate Your Numbers: "Spread out in the hall and try to be in the front half. The objective is to put the Rep on the defensive with your questions and follow-up. The Rep should be made to feel that a majority, and if not, a significant portion of at least the audience, opposes the socialist agenda of Washington."

  • Be Disruptive Early And Often: "You need to rock-the-boat early in the Rep’s presentation, Watch for an opportunity to yell out and challenge the Rep’s statements early."

  • Try To "Rattle Him," Not Have An Intelligent Debate: "The goal is to rattle him, get him off his prepared script and agenda. If he says something outrageous, stand up and shout out and sit right back down. Look for these opportunities before he even takes questions."

Texas Republican Congressman Pete Sessions has endorsed these strategies:

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), chairman of the NRCC, has endorsed the strategy, telling the Politico the days of civil town halls are now “over.”

What are the consequences stoking such unbridled anger and hatred for health care? How do you make them afraid? What is it that Republicans are willing to do, exactly, to incite this fear and anger among there suporters?

Well, here's one example --

"Adolf Hitler, like Barack Obama, also ruled by dictate" -- Republican radio host, Rush Limbaugh: (Source)

And here's another one:

"This health care issue Is D-Day for freedom in America...If we’re able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo. It will break him," he said.  -- Republican Senator Jim DeMint: (Source)

Effigy of a Democratic Congressman in Maryland (Source)

I could go on and on, but you get the picture. The Democratic National Committee released this ad, highlighting the anarchy of the far-right:

The most important thing for Democrats to do, right now, is try to maintain a civil tone and document any protests at town halls.

FireDogLake is tracking town halls around the country -- if there's going to be one near you, let them know, or check their list and see if there's one you can attend near where you live or happen to be traveling.

5:20pm Update: Here's some information about how others are getting involved:Additionally, a Republican Congressman made a joke about lynching Democrats at the town halls.

Karl Rove Lies About Specter Switch

by: Libby Shaw

Tue Apr 28, 2009 at 04:32 PM CDT

As one would expect Karl Rove blatantly lied about Senator Arlen Specter's motivation for switching his Party affiliation from Republican to Democrat.

In a statement issued earlier today, Senator Specter said his former Party had moved too far right.

Since my election in 1980, as part of the Reagan Big Tent, the Republican Party has moved far to the right. Last year, more than 200,000 Republicans in Pennsylvania changed their registration to become Democrats. I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans.

Speaking from FOX Looney Tunes News, Rove said Specter had lurched left.

At The Top of Trickle Down Torture

by: Libby Shaw

Sun Apr 26, 2009 at 09:22 PM CDT

The torture reports, continued.

No wonder Dick Cheney has been appearing so frequently on FOX News.  It's an attempt for him to defend his deplorable record and to distract the media and the public from the truth.  Cheney has been attacking President Obama right and left in order to change the subject about torture.

You see, reports reveal that Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice signed off on torture.

A newly declassified narrative of the Bush administration's advice to the CIA on harsh interrogations shows that the small group of Justice Department lawyers who wrote memos authorizing controversial interrogation techniques were operating not on their own but with direction from top administration officials, including then-Vice President Dick Cheney and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice.

Trickle Down Torture

by: Libby Shaw

Thu Apr 23, 2009 at 08:13 PM CDT

(Really solid post w/ lots of videos. - promoted by Phillip Martin)

First, from the Texas wing of The Party of Torture and Tax Cuts.

Senator John Cornyn, prominent member of the Party of Torture and willing player in the Bush Administration's
Journey to Depravity must think Democrats are quaking in their boots because, according to The Huffington Post he attempted to bully and blackmail them on the torture issue.

Cornyn apparently prefers to sweep the recent revelations of torture under the rug.  That or pin the blame on Democrats who served on the Foreign Intelligence Committee at the time, and/or stick it to low level military and CIA officers at the bottom of the torture chain of command.

If Democrats insist on probing the Bush administration's program of detainee torture, they'd better be careful, a senior Senate Republican said Tuesday, because they might find blood on their own hands as well.

"To sit quietly and to let this happen and then to come back later and say people ought to be prosecuted criminally, not just here in the United States but perhaps internationally, to me is inconsistent, to say the least," said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).

I'd be very careful if I were Big John.

Ongoing Psycho Babble From the Right

by: Libby Shaw

Sun Apr 12, 2009 at 05:54 PM CDT

So, we've been hearing a lot of chatter on cable TV this week about a Fox News/GOP Tea Party Revolution.  Fox News and the right wing fringe of the GOP have obviously gone completely bat bleep crazy over something.  They are screaming day in and day about something.  I am not sure what it is at this point.  I've heard rants like "taxation without representation."

Huh?  As I've mentioned before, we had an election recently that did not require lawsuits or recounts.  This week President Obama has a 66% approval rating.  The Democratic Party is at 51% while the Republican Party has a 26% approval rating.  A majority of Independents and some moderate Republicans support President Obama's agenda.

So why is there so noise spewing from the right?   Is this tea party thing merely a childish tantrum thrown by a bunch of sore losers and clowns?

Let's explore a few events of this past week to try to find an answer.

So Now They Want a Revolution?

by: Libby Shaw

Tue Apr 07, 2009 at 04:52 PM CDT

( - promoted by Phillip Martin)

Lately we have been hearing a lot of squawking and screeching emanating from the conservative right wing about a revolution.

This is rather perplexing given that we recently had an election in which the elected President won rather substantially without the need for voter caging, voter suppression, election fraud, recounts, recount shut downs, lawsuits and the Supreme Court.  Nor was it necessary to bring in the likes of a Swift Boat attack machine and a corrupted Secretary of State (R-OH) to deliver a win in a razor thin, close election.

And despite all of the problems we face in these dire and stressful times the President's approval ratings remain in the 60's.  Today it is at 67%. Today an ABC/Washington Post poll also reveals 65% trust President Obama to handle relations with Muslim nations.

So, what is the problem?  Why is a revolution necessary now?
