Worker Intimidation in 08 Election Goes International

by: satyr9us

Fri Oct 24, 2008 at 05:06 PM CDT

Remember the stories just a few months ago about Walmart executives sitting all their employees down and sternly warning them to vote Republican? Because if they didn't, the evil unions would take over the world, and then there would be no jobs?

From the August 14 Nation article:

Earlier this month the Wall Street Journal reported that Wal-Mart, fearful of mandatory labor laws, is politically bullying its employees to vote Republican in this year's election.

...
Wal-Mart strongly opposes the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), which supports unionization and seeks to establish higher penalties for violations of employee rights. The EFCA would likely be passed under a democratic leadership, so Wal-Mart educates its employees about its strong rejection of the bill, but doesn't tell them how to vote, according to David Tovar, Wal-Mart's spokesman. With the EFCA still dormant, the company's managers are told to call a special hotline prepared to swiftly diffuse any type of situation that may involve potential employee organization.

Well... Walmart's now flexing its muscles to indicate its preparedness to back up its ugly threats. Details below the fold.

WakeUpWalmart.com Skewers McCain in New Ad

by: WakeUpWalMart

Thu Oct 02, 2008 at 03:01 PM CDT

McCain probably thought that by choosing Sarah Palin as a running mate he could mask his record on women's issues - or to borrow a timely phrase, put lipstick on the pig that is his platform.

But WakeUpWalmart.com is going to make sure he doesn't get away with it.

In a new ad, WakeUpWalmart.com highlights what is one of the most egregious examples of his standing in the way of progressive reforms like fair pay for women.

Women working at Walmart make notoriously less than their male counterparts (it's the Walmart way).  That's why WakeUp Walmart joined together with other groups to form the largest discrimination class action in history.

This was a chance for Big Mac to prove those reform credentials he likes to talk about, but instead he case a big, fat, regressive "NO" to fair pay.

Wake Up Walmart Starts 2008 Campaign

by: WakeUpWalMart

Tue Mar 25, 2008 at 03:16 PM CDT

Wake Up Walmart has released its first video of 2008.  Walmart is a key issue for progressives to focus on -- because of their awful health care benefits, Texas citizens are estimated to be paying $134,161,466 a year in taxes to cover poor Walmart employees and their families with health care -- while Walmart is making huge profits.

Please check out this video, and let your friends know why we need to "Wake Up Walmart".

Levitating Northcross: circling hands to protest WalMart

by: johnnyquill

Mon Feb 12, 2007 at 00:33 PM CST

(This post and related posts at... lobuzone.blogspot.com/)

I attended the most recent happening in the Northcross neighbors versus Wal-Mart battle on a breezy Saturday morning. The organizers called RG4N (Responsible Growth for Northcross) made red the color of this effort. Red is the color of stop and you can get red-eyed with anger. Many people featured red shirts, caps, gloves, etc.. One bearded guy hoisted the flag of Texas. We were somewhat connected via unfurled red ribbons of paper and many held sign asking that the Wal-Mart project be stopped in its tracks. Favorite sign of the day-- "Wal-Mart not Weird"

Huge turnout at anti-WalMart rally Saturday

by: BeckyH

Sun Feb 11, 2007 at 06:00 PM CST

( - promoted by Matt Glazer)

cross-posted at DK & will be at TxK tomorrow, because my home computer refuses to stay logged in to TK)

Saturday morning, the rally I've talked about in my previous 2 diaries happened and it was a great success. I was on three streets of the protest, looking for t-shirts, and from what I saw, they met the goal of encircling the mall. That's a lot of people. And about half of the cars who passes by were honking their support & waving. Seriously - if I were WalMart, I would be re-thinking this thing. Of course, the local media have massively underestimated the number of people who were there. But that's no surprise.
