Obama Broadly Describes Potential Running Mate

by: Michael Hurta

Mon Jul 28, 2008 at 00:00 PM CDT

Tom Brokaw, on Meet the Press, succeeded in pushing Barack Obama to elaborate just a bit on his Vice Presidential thinking:
I'm going to want somebody with integrity; I'm going to want somebody with independence, who's willing to tell me where he thinks or she thinks I'm wrong; and I'm, I'm going to want somebody who shares a vision of the country where we need to go, that we've got to fundamentally change not only our policies, but how our politics works, how business is done in Washington.

That got an interesting response out of NBC's political team at First Read, who asked, "Did he just rule out that he would pick a sitting Democratic US senator? Try and use that description Obama gave with Bayh, Biden, Clinton, or Reed? Now, try using it with Kaine, Sebelius, Nunn, or Hagel? Just sayin'... If Obama picks someone from the first group, he's going to have a tough time making the case that this person has shown a history of changing the way business is done in Washington. Frankly, it's tough naming any Washington player using that standard."

Among others, it quite possibly also rules out Texan Chet Edwards, who probably has gotten vetted anyways thanks to Nancy Pelosi.

But maybe the leader of the pack is now Governor Kaine.  Perhaps we weren't so slighted by Barack Obama's pick to send to our convention, after all?

At any rate, we'll probably know within the next week or two.  Until then, it's just stuff to think about.

No word yet if Barack is going to be attending the Texas convention (though I have heard rumor that Clinton may be coming Saturday). This press announcement from the Obama campaign seems to indicate that Virginia Governor Tim Kaine will be speaking for him on Friday night.

CHICAGO - Virginia Governor and Obama campaign National Co-Chair Tim Kaine will travel to Austin this weekend to speak to the Texas Democratic Convention on behalf of Senator Barack Obama.

On March 4th, Obama claimed an important delegate victory in Texas that was marked by record-setting turn-out in the state's primary and caucuses.

"I look forward to traveling to Texas this weekend and seeing firsthand the grassroots movement for change that has inspired men and women of all ages all across the Lone Star State to get involved in the political process," said Governor Kaine. "It is time for all of us to come together and focus our efforts on winning in November.  Voters in Texas and across the country have the opportunity to unite behind Senator Obama and his vision for bringing people together and his effort to move this country forward."
