Speakers Race Back On?

by: Burnt Orange Report

Mon May 14, 2007 at 09:24 AM CDT

Burka has been writing some speculation about a speakers race.  After 87 members voted against Craddick last Monday, is it possible someone will move to vacate the chair?

The rumors abound are that Jim Keffer might be most openly making the rounds, but there isn't a single member in the House that doesn't want to be speaker.  Is Keffer the best choice to represent every Texan?  Probably not, but Keffers open campaigning is a clear sign that the House is influx.

Could make for an interesting couple of weeks.

UPDATE: The speculation post:

Latest word is the confirmation that if they can get the votes, they definitely will do this and probably Monday and no later than Thursday.

UPDATE: Just found this comment on Burka's blog very interesting.
...in 1996 when Mr. Keffer was first elected he filled out the National Political Awareness Test offered by the bipartisan Project Vote Smart. On the question that asked, "Please indicate the changes you will support (if any) concerning Texas' tax levels for the following categories" he indicated for the category on "Business Taxes" that they should be "Greatly Decreased." However, Mr. Keffer was the primary author of the tax bill in the most recent special session and during the current legislative session, he has adjusted that bill by GREATLY INCREASING taxes on Texas businesses. All the while, Mr. Keffer's own business - EBBA Iron, Inc. - has been targeted for huge tax breaks based on his tax legislation.

by: Matt Glazer

Sun May 06, 2007 at 09:08 AM CDT

Join Texas Monthly Talks for an interview with writer and provocateur Christopher Hitchens, who has something to say about the war in Iraq, why women aren’t funny, and every conceivable subject in between.

Hitchens has written 16 books, is a columnist for Vanity Fair and a regular contributor to Slate, has served as Washington editor of Harper’s, and has written for The Nation, The London Review of Books, and countless other magazines. And Hitchens leaves no room for doubt about his opinions, beginning with the title of his latest book: God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything.

by: Matt Glazer

Remember Ted Nugent? Kind of hard to forget. If you are in Austin next Tuesday, hear the controversial Republican and Gov Perry supporter talk. I put my money on a dozen racist comments. Any takers?

Join Texas Monthly Talks host Evan Smith

You are cordially invited to join KLRU and Texas Monthly Talks for a special conversation with Ted Nugent.

Texas Monthly: The Legacy of President Bush

by: Matt Glazer

Sat Feb 17, 2007 at 10:53 AM CST

Thanks to our friend Evan Smith at Texas Monthly, we have a preview of next month's feature story.

Texas Monthly interviewed 15 historians, White House veterans, and biographers and asked two question, "what is the Bush legacy" and "does he have time to change it".

We don't want to spill the beans on the whole story, so below the fold we have given you a teaser until March.  You can read what Republican strategist Matthew Dowd and Democratic pundit Paul Begala have to say.  Keep in mind, both men are from the great state of Texas, that means their opinions matter more.

WOW ! Watch This ! Have EVERY TEXAN Watch This !

Please, if anyone has the know how to record this and get it on Youtube I Beg you to do it, this is the most in depth and tough interview I can imagine thats out there with him, the host, Evan Smith, in a fair tone, fires all the hard questions covering most every issue that this election is about and does not let up or let Chris get away with anything

And Chris Bell shines
The man REEKS of integrity , how anyone could vote for the other clowns after watching this I can't imagine

I saw Bell at the convention and at a senior center in the next precinct
and he was good on the stump, but this format was exemplary of the mind and style of what type Governor he would be

Let me put it this way,if I had a link of this interview I would put it in the bio I hand out when I walk the precinct and make special mention that this is Bell under fire and a look at how he reasons

If it was rerun tomorrow in D/FW I would say to hell with the block walk and put a flyer on every door in the precinct in bold letters pointing out this interview

So I beg if anyone has a recorder and can put it on Youtube it would make a great tool for those of us out there getting the word out on Chris, cause believe me about a third of the people that answer the door in this north of Dallas Red suburb give me this embarrassed look like they don't want the spouse or neighbor to know they are going to actually LISTEN to what a Democrat has to say and 10 minutes of this Bell interview would bring them on over to our side

Below is a listing of dates and times when you can watch the next governor of Texas on your local public television station:

Sunday, October 22 at noon
Monday, November 6 at 4:00 a.m.

Chris Bell is Sisyphus

by: Ryan Goodland

Wed May 17, 2006 at 10:24 PM CDT

Texas Monthly has a long profile out for June about Chris Bell entitled, "He's Sisyphus, and He Approves this Message." It's a good read and profile with a good take on the electoral math that gives Bell a chance to win.

The article was obviously written before the special session ended, but with any luck it'll scrape Bell's name into the steadily drying block of conventional wisdom cement that says the gubernatorial race was decided this past weekend once the legislature adjourned.

At the very least, this article won't be up on the wesbite that long, so go read it while you can.
