MLK Day of Service

by: Texans for Obama

Mon Jan 18, 2010 at 01:37 PM CST

(There are many important ways to contribute in our community. Please join in contributing to those in need in Central Texas, and to those in Haiti. - promoted by Katherine Haenschen)

PhotobucketPhotobucketLast year, President Obama challenged us to celebrate MLK Day by participating in a national day of service.

Thousands of people volunteered in their communities, and locally, we launched our "Yes We Cans" food drive to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank. Our grassroots volunteers went door-to-door and collected over 3,000 pounds!

This year, in addition to collecting food, we're also fundraising for the Haitian relief effort. Let's join together and use our grassroots network to improve people's lives, one donation at a time.

You can get involved by visiting the Obama booth at the MLK Festival on Monday 1/18 at Huston Tillotson University. Or you can come to our regular Texans for Obama meetup on Tuesday 1/19 at Scholz Garten at 6:00pm. If you live outside of Austin, then go online and find a service project near you.

Let's make it our new years resolution to get more involved in community service. You can make the 2010 MLK Day of Service a Texas-sized success by collecting canned food and donating to Haiti.

Austin Health Care Rally; Largest in the Country

by: David Kobierowski

Sat Jul 25, 2009 at 10:25 PM CDT

Obama For America - Austin, Texans for Obama, the TCDP, numerous local elected officials, and many other organizations and over 562 people officially enjoyed the "largest OFA Health Care Rally in the country today".  Local news reported "about 1,000 people".

But Per Mike Litt, OFA-Austin, the official count for sign-ins was 562.  (We had clip boards up front for them to sign as they stormed into the hall).

562 is a very conservative estimate.  Since a fair amout of folks did not sign-in.  (I personally witnessed a number of folks walk in without signing up).  We probably had nearly 900 people total if you count everyone, including those in the parking lot that didn't come inside.

Thank you to everyone for being part of history today.  And thank you for everyone working to get the word out in such a short notice. Y'all know who you are. This all happened in about a week.  Super job.

Overall, everyone appeared civil.  I was impressed that citizens on our side (Obama side) kept our cool and took the higher road, even when challenged by the other side.

The "other side" included about 40 people that mostly lined the other side of Lavaca with signs and cheering against "Obama Care".

As for the other side, I feel they're doing themselves a disservice by crashing our party.  This is why:

- Their arguments are weak and often don't make much sense.
- They don't have an alternative for reform. (I purposely stuck around for another 1/2 hour after the event, and talked with over 15 of them.  I put myself in their shoes and tried to see it from their side.  None of them could offer an alternative.  They only wanted to stop Obama.  I just walked away wondering what the heck they were trying to accomplish.

TXCN News (KVUE's top story this evening) quoted an individual opposed to Obama's plan at the rally saying

..."Mark Keedy is against the current plan. He believes if it passes everyone will get substandard care.

"There are always going to be people who need help," he said.  "We'll always be here to help those people, but for everyone who says they need help there maybe a way for them to get help without this type of radical change."

Well, so what's the alternative???

- We outnumbered them by such a huge number that it was almost embarrassing for the other side.
- They crashed our party.  Wedding crashers don't get a lot of respect by anyone.
- More and more Republicans and Independents in TX are joining us in this effort each day with about 70% in agreement that we need to invest in Health Care Reform.

I'd like to know how y'all feel about the "political wedding crashing" effort in general.  (no need to call them the name that starts with a "T", as they clearly don't like it).

Please share. Do you feel this is helping their effort or not? Not just for Health Care, but for any topic or event, has our side or their side had any postive consequences resulting from the practice of crashing the other side's event(s)?  Why don't they host their own event?  Why crash ours?  Do we ever crash their events?

Best,
David Kobierowski

Tonight: Meet Bill White at Scholz Garten

by: Texans for Obama

Tue May 19, 2009 at 00:32 PM CDT

President Obama unveiled today a bold new plan to increase auto fuel efficiency. This will reduce our dependency on foreign oil and help our environment. Obama's delivering real results and creating change we can believe in!

Today's news is welcome after eight long years of the Bush/Cheney era, but we must keep pressing forward. In order to pass Obama's full agenda, we need to elect more Democratic Senators who won't filibuster Obama's call for change.

Here in our own backyard, Texas Democrats have a unique opportunity to win the open U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Houston Mayor Bill White is a nationally recognized leader on alternative energy, and he's announced his candidacy as a Democrat for this Senate seat. Tonight, he'll be at Scholz Garten to answer your questions about his policy proposals. This is an important race with national implications, so we look forward to seeing you at Scholz Garten.

Texans for Obama May Meetup
Featuring Mayor Bill White
Tuesday, May 19
6:00 - 7:00 p.m.
Scholz Garten
1607 San Jacinto Blvd
Austin, TX 78701
Free Admission
RSVP on Facebook

Thanks for everything you did to help elect Barack Obama. Now let's continue the momentum and elect a Texas Senator who will support Obama's agenda.

Our next monthly meetup is scheduled for June 16. The special guest will be John Sharp, another great Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate. Fired up and ready to go!

Yes We CANS Food Drive - Over 3,000 Pounds Collected!

by: Ian

Wed Feb 18, 2009 at 10:18 AM CST

Many of you joined Texans for Obama last month for our incredibly successful National Day of Service food drive benefitting the Capital Area Food Bank.  We went door-to-door, and our goal was to collect one ton of food.

PhotobucketWe're excited to announce that thanks to your help and the support of Council Members Martinez and Leffingwell, we've now raised over 3,000 pounds of food!

Thank you for acting upon President Obama's challenge to get involved in community service.  In these these difficult times, food donations are even more important as we try to meet the growing hunger challenge.  While Obama's bold economic stimulus plan will make a huge difference in turning things around, it's our responsibility to take action on the local level.  So if you still have extra food in your cabinet, please continue to support this food drive and help our neighbors in need.

PhotobucketGoing forward, we'd like to harness this collective grassroots Obama energy to tackle additional community service projects.  In that spirit, we've connected with a wonderful local environmental group called TreeFolks, and we'll help them plant new trees in our local parks.  Over the last 20 years, this group has planted hundreds of thousands of trees in public settings across the area, and we're excited to help with that effort.  Council Members Martinez & Leffingwell have generously agreed to buy breakfast tacos for our volunteers, so come out and help improve our local environment.  (See below for more information.)

Remember, the 2008 election was not the end of our journey.  It was only the beginning.  Please join your fellow Texas Obama supporters and let's volunteer to make a difference in our own backyard.  Yes we can!

Best regards,
-Texans for Obama
