As FEC filings for Congressional races poured in yesterday, there was some noticeable news from the race for TX-10. Democratic nominee Larry Joe Doherty, who has out raised Republican incumbent Mike McCaul 2 of the previous 3 quarters, continued his streak of grassroots fundraising.
Doherty's supporters contributed $213,795.32 to his campaign this quarter - including pushing him over the $1 million mark for the campaign cycle.
On first glance, it appears Republican McCaul finally took advantage of being a two-term incumbent to out raise Doherty by raising $283,000. But upon further review, we noticed that for the second time in as many quarter's McCaul made a personal contribution to his own campaign of $60,000 - meaning McCaul just edged Doherty in what is shaping up to be a pivotal Congressional race on the state and national stage.
Another curious piece to the McCaul puzzle: he made the contribution on the last day of the filing period and the same day Doherty announced his campaign surpassed the $1 million mark.
Bottom Line: This is a district the Republicans created to be a safe seat for years to come. However, the tide has turned and Larry Joe offers the voters a voice in DC unlike Congressman ClearChannel. McCaul is running scared and trying to buy his way to reelection and we cannot let that happen.

Took long enough but good news for the Doherty campaign.
The Red to Blue program highlights top Democratic campaigns across the country, and offers them financial, communications, and strategic support. The program introduces Democratic supporters to new, competitive candidates in order to help expand the fundraising base for their campaigns.
"The constituents of Texas' 10th Congressional District are demanding an end to McCaul's pay-for-play style of politics, and they deserve an independent leader who will fight for them in Washington," said Doherty. "I am proud to have the support of the DCCC to give a voice back to those who are shouldering the burden of a failed energy policy, a failed foreign policy and a government that has been asleep at the wheel while Wall Street bankrupted Main Street."
From DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen.
"Larry Joe Doherty is running a solid campaign and is committed to making things easier for middle class families in their districts," said DCCC Chairman Rep. Chris Van Hollen. "With less than 21 days to make his case for change to voters, the Red to Blue program will give Larry Joe the financial and structural edge to be even more competitive in November."

After receiving 39 percent in the Democratic Primary in March, Dan Grant has officially endorsed the man who defeated him, Larry Joe Doherty. Grant said Texans needed a break from "McCaulonomics" and that a Doherty victory would help District 10 uphold the proud history of Lyndon B. Johnson and Jake Pickle. From Grant's press release, picked up from the Austin Chronicle's News Desk blog: Middle-class families and small businesses have been pushed to the brink of bankruptcy by the administration’s economic incompetence,” Grant said. “In the midst of the most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression, Larry Joe Doherty wants to turn the page — and Mike McCaul wants to laminate it.” Grant said the fact that the 10th Congressional District’s boundaries were redrawn during a controversial redistricting scheme pushed by disgraced former Congressman Tom DeLay is part of the same culture of corruption that has led to the current financial crisis. “Central Texas deserves a fresh start under new leadership,” Grant said. “No more endless war in Iraq, no more Katrina, no more McCaulonomics putting at risk the pension and small business of ordinary taxpayers who work hard and play by the rules.”

STATE OF THE RACE: Lean McCaul Candidate Page: Larry Joe Doherty Candidate Page: Mike McCaul Click here to return to the Burnt Orange Political Report home page. Stretching from north Austin and southern Williamson County along U.S. 290 towards Katy, the 10th Congressional District of Texas is one of the best chances for Texas to regain another Democratic member of Congress. Larry Joe Doherty is trying to make that happen. After succesfully navigating his way through the primary against Dan Grant, Doherty found himself running a strong campaign against a relatively unknown incumbent. His poll numbers are within reach, the Cook Political Report switched the race from "Solid" to "Likely" over the summer, and the DCCC announced it as an "Emerging Race" to follow in mid-September. And the latest poll shows Doherty within 5 points. We expect new information every week on the race; be sure to bookmark the tags below, and keep track of BOR for the latest on Doherty's attempts to unseat incumbent Republican Mike Mccaul.
Here are links to past coverage of the race on Burnt Orange Report:

- The limited gains McCaul has had in name ID have all been negative.
- McCaul's job rating is 33% positive, 38% negative, and 29% unsure – his negative rating has risen 9 points since May.

Rush Limbaugh and Clear Channel Communications Lowry Mays, who is McCaul's father-in-law, will host a fundraiser for Mike McCaul in San Antonio next month. The McCaul campaign is doing its pathetic best to distance McCaul from Limbaugh even though the hate-filled commentator will be raising money for the congressman. From the Statesman: Jack Ladd, McCaul’s campaign spokesman, said, “Just because Rush Limbaugh is attending a fundraiser for Michael doesn’t mean they agree on every issue and we believe Michael’s voting record speaks for itself.” Asked to name an issue on which they disagree, Ladd repeated, “I think Michael’s voting record speaks for itself.”
Mike McCaul's record does speak for itself. He puts the special interests above the people's interests and continues the pay-to-play politics he learned from Tom DeLay.

Recently, we reported on the Doherty campaign's new site, WhatDeLayTaughtMcCaul.com. There is a lot of great information on the site, ranging from McCaul's close ties to oil companies and the pharmaceutical industry to his complete flip-flop on earmarks, but one that really caught my eye was Mike McCaul's betrayal on Medicare. Medicare is supposed to be there to help all of us. But Mike McCaul sees is differently. To him, Medicare is just another opportunity to divert our tax dollars for another corporate payoff — this time, 3.7 billion dollars in windfall profits for the drug manufacturers. Mike McCaul has taken over $10,000 in political contributions from drug companies. Mike McCaul voted against the Department of Health and Human Services from negotiating volume discounts for prescription drugs for seniors — totally disregarding the 5 million seniors who suffer from Alzheimer’s, the nearly 2 million who suffer from full-blown depression and over 500,000 who will suffer a stroke this year. But it should come as no surprise that McCaul would put his corporate buddies before parents and grandparents. It is all part of the Pay-for Play philosophy McCaul learned from the very man who kick-started his first campaign with a $10,000 donation, McCaul’s mentor — Tom DeLay.
Be sure to visit the site and tell any friends who may be undecided about it. If we want to end the pay-to-play politics in Washington, a great first step is to get rid of Mike McCaul. And, of course, be sure to help out Larry Joe Doherty.

After considering three offered dates for a debate to be hosted by the Austin American-Statesman, Republican incumbent Congressman Mike McCaul has declined the invitation. The Statesman's Jason Embry reports that both Democratic challenger Larry Joe Doherty and Libertarian nominee Matt Finkel said they would be available to debate on any of the three possible dates. For an incumbent who is so remarkably unknown in his own district, McCaul sure does not seem concerned about giving his constituents a better idea of where he stands on the issues. From the Statesman: The American-Statesman has tried for more than two weeks to schedule a debate with McCaul, R-Austin, and his two challengers this fall, Democrat Larry Joe Doherty and Libertarian Matt Finkel. McCaul’s campaign quickly rejected two proposed dates but left open a third until Monday, when it said he would not take part. “We have a time conflict with those days and we have so much scheduled in the district,” said McCaul campaign spokesman Jack Ladd. “We’re just not going to be able to do it.” Ladd could not immediately say what the exact scheduling conflicts were.
After Larry Joe Doherty was recently added to the DCCC's Emerging Races list, it is clear that Mike McCaul, a two-term incumbent, is running scared. Updated: The Doherty campaign has issued a statement on the (non) debates. "At a time when our financial markets are going bankrupt, our energy bills are skyrocketing and the public's trust in Congress has collapsed, it is irresponsible of McCaul to run away from the issues," said Doherty. "Texas families are struggling, and they deserve to know my opponent's views on the issues they face each day. My campaign is based on holding Washington accountable, and politicians like McCaul need to be held responsible for the pay-for-play style politics that place the burden on working families."
Well said, Larry Joe.

Just after we got the exciting news that Michael Skelly had been named to latest round of the DCCC's Red to Blue candidates, there's another reason for Texas Democrats to be optimistic: Larry Joe Doherty has been added to the newest list of Emerging Races. Joining Larry Joe on the newest Emerging Races list are Becky Greenwalkd (IA-04), Scott Harper (IL-13), Linda Ketner (SC-01) and Jim Harlan (LA-01). These is yet another clear sign that the race in TX-10 is extremely competitive and offers Democrats a real chance to pick up a congressional seat. Doherty will benefit from both the Travis County and Harris County Coordinated Campaigns along with the energized Democratic activists in Bastrop, Lee, Burleson, Washington, Austin and Waller counties. Congratulations to the Doherty campaign on this recognition of the great work they've been doing.

One of my proud feelings about the Texas netroots has been our ability to help money come to our local candidates. Now we have an opportunity once more.
Many of you are familiar with Russ Feingold's Progressive Patriots program. Well, there's now a vote for House Challengers.
And Larry Joe Doherty has a chance to bring 5 grand back to help Texas turn blue.
Vote for him here.
