Republican Minority Whip and Missouri Congressman Roy Blunt is coming to town for a high dollar fundraiser for embattled Republican Mike McCaul.
We have gotten our hands on the invite and the language used shows a concerned Republican Party.
As you are aware, Michael will have a challenging race on his hands this fall. The 10th Congressional District is undoubtedly the toughest in the state and retaining this seat is important.
That's an understatement. McCaul won with a horrid 55% of the vote in 2006 and both Larry Joe Doherty and Dan Grant have nearly tripple the amount of money Ted Ankrum raised.
The fact that McCaul's campaign is virtually non-existent, he owes himself over fifty thousand dollars, and his Delay drawn district is trending rapidly Democratic all seem to scare the Republican party.
No reason to send the second highest ranking member in the Congressional Republican delegation to progressive Austin unless Roy Blunt and the dwindling Republican Party is afraid of losing another Congressional seat in Texas.
I am proud to have received the enthusiastic endorsement of the Texas AFL-CIO and other Labor groups representing more than 230,000 working men and women across the state.
Every progressive movement in our nation's modern history has come about because of Organized Labor's courage and steadfast refusal to take its eye off the ball -- protecting the health and well-being of the great American middle class.
According to a press release, Congressional candidate and Austin native, Dan Grant received the full endorsement of the Texas AFL-CIO in his race for the Democratic nomination for Congressional District 10.
"The working families of Texas have put their support behind me," Grant said. "They can count on me to go to Washington and help us all to make a fresh start in a new direction."
Grant earned the official backing of the Austin Central Labor Council, the Brazos Valley Central Labor Council, the Harris County Central Labor Council, and the Texas AFL-CIO in the March 4 Democratic primary.
Grant is challenging Mike McCaul in the November general election and Larry Joe Doherty in the March 4th Democratic primary.
Ankrum: "Dan Grant is the only Democrat in the race who can beat Mike McCaul"
Ted Ankrum, the retired Navy officer, diplomat, and NASA administrator who earned the 2006 Democratic nomination in Texas' 10th Congressional District, today threw his support behind foreign policy expert Dan Grant's candidacy for a fresh start in a new direction, saying that Grant's experience in Iraq and other global trouble spots will help him lead the fight to bring U.S. troops home and shore up the economies of communities across Central Texas.
"Dan is the only Democrat in the race who can beat Mike McCaul," Ankrum said. "He is uniquely qualified to redirect the tax dollars being squandered in Baghdad to our own communities in Brenham, Bastrop, and beyond. Simply put, he is the right choice for all of us in this year that promises dramatic change."
The reviews are in, and consumer spending this holiday season was up a mere 3.6 percent over the year before. It was the weakest increase in at least four years, as families purchased fewer presents to put under the tree -- and spent one-third of that increase on gasoline.
The news is the latest evidence that the free spending fueled by Washington's aimless policies in Iraq has turned our economy into the equivalent of a grade-B horror flick come to life -- Return of the Living Debt.
So far the information about fundraising is lopsided, as only Larry Joe Doherty has released his fundraising numbers for the last quarter of 2007.
Larry Joe Doherty Dan Grant
2nd/3rd Quarter $125,000 $105,000
4Th Quarter $150,000 ???
The campaign is a candidate’s mechanism to deliver his message. A campaign requires structure, organization and money. Because TX-10 is composed of two media markets, it will take about $1.5 million for a democratic candidate to fund a competitive campaign. Mike McCaul is a two term incumbent who if needed can spend two to three times that amount. So money matters because it is necessary to fund a viable campaign to get a Democrat elected to TX-10.
Larry Joe Doherty has a viable campaign that will be competitive in November. His campaign's fourth quarter fundraising numbers were more than the second and third quarters combined showing the momentum growing in Larry Joe Doherty's campaign. Until Dan Grant’s campaign releases their 4th quarter numbers, the jury is still out on the viability of his campaign
Since putting up a new Burnt Orange Report poll, we've let it passively be voted on over in the right hand sidebar. But many readers (especially those who take the RSS route) might not have voted it it yet. Here are the results so far and please vote if you haven't yet!
Who would you vote for in the TX-10 Democratic primary to take on Rep. McCaul?
* Dan Grant - 61 votes (79.22%)
* Larry Joe Doherty - 16 votes (20.78%)
The candidate filing period opened today — and Dan was there to make it official, saying he hoped to signal his understanding of how eager Central Texas voters are to get started on changing Washington.
Over a month ago, Dan Grant released his first ad, "A Fresh Start in a New Direction". Since then it has been on CNN, News 8 Austin, and other cable channels, and it appears Grant's message is striking a chord with Democrats.
In a recent Hill article Democrats give the ad high marks.
Another ad from Texas Democratic congressional candidate Dan Grant features flag-draped coffins and calls for an end to the Iraq war. Despite its generally taboo imagery, the ad scored well among Democrats, garnering a 6.7.
The scale is from zero to 10, and while Democrats are responding to the hard-hitting ad, Republicans don't appear to like being confronted by the truth.
Republicans gave it shoddy marks, including a 2.4 for its appeal.

Dan Grant continues to attract national attention. This story was posted on The Hill last night...

Grant is running for Rep. Michael McCaul's (R-Texas) seat.
For those of you who haven't seen his ad, it is hard-hitting, but addresses a critical issue. As a veteran, I understand the uneasiness an image of a flag-draped coffin can inspire...however, I also think that ignoring the fact that there are far too many Americans coming home this way is unconscionable.
I have spent the last few months volunteering for Dan. Having depended upon U.S. Service members for his personal safety in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kosovo, Dan is now dedicating himself to fighting for their safe return. This veteran would much rather have someone representing him who is willing to talk about hard-hitting issues and work for solutions, than an empty suit who says it is unpatriotic to disagree with the War in Iraq. Dan is fighting to bring my friends home, and I'll do everything I can to make sure he is elected.
