Texan Editorials

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Wed Jul 05, 2006 at 02:01 AM CDT

While I am now a summer columnist for the Daily Texan on Tuesdays, yesterday being the 4th moved things back a day. So intead of a "Texan Tuesday" we'll just have a "Texan Wednesday" (not quite the same ring, I know). Clips from today's column on redistricting.

Texas has seen so many attempts to redistrict members of Congress this decade that our lawmakers ought to consider becoming professional cartographers.

With the Supreme Court ruling part of the current map unconstitutional last week, Texas legislators are now hoping that a panel of judges will redraw the lines. Ironically, it was lines drawn by these same judges four years ago after legislative deadlock that prompted Tom DeLay and Texas Speaker Tom Craddick to dice up Texas again.

...

It is high time for Texas to recognize the democratic necessity for voters to choose their representative, not for representatives to choose their voters.

Being "drawn together" might make for a great show on Comedy Central, but perpetual redistricting is most decidedly not fun for millions of Texans waiting for their elected officials to get to work solving problems instead of creating new ones.

Also, Wednesday columnist Seth Harp has a good piece on raising the gas tax which you should check out.

Daily Texan Editor Race

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Sun Feb 19, 2006 at 09:31 PM CST

After skipping a year of contest for the Daily Texan Editor, we return to a two person race for the chief of the opinion page, even while the Texan continues to debate whether to have its Editor elected or not.  There are two candidates this year, Nikki Buskey and JJ Hermes.  While I'm hoping to invite both to personally write about their campaigns in this forum, I ran across one letter written so far that I'd like to share for those interested and have included it below the fold.

My question to you, is what questions might you like to see answered by the candidates (both capable and qualified unlike 2 years ago)?  What are your thoughts about the Texan Editor as an elected position, or the powers they have?

University Democrats Endorses in Campus Elections

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Wed Feb 15, 2006 at 11:49 PM CST

As much as elections excite me, there is nothing that gets me going like campus politics.

Ok, so I lie.  After 2 years of suffering campus elections for Student Government, Student Events Center President (which is marginally more interesting and has like 5 times more money than SG), and the Daily Texan editor (where we actually have a race again this year), I'm generally not all to concerned with who wins what.  And for those of you who also tire of these two week bursts of t-shirts and flyers littering every corner of campus, well, you can thank Chris Bell for bringing it back into existance those many years ago.

That being said, I'll still give the races some coverage, and make some Burnt Orange Endosements for all you out there that continue to trust our wisened team of seasoned reporters (or simply just like to be told how to vote). But until then, here are the University Democrats endorsements...

Student Government Ticket: Impact (be careful, there is sound)

SEC President: John Grube (who is proudly displaying the endorsement already)

Daily Texan Editor: Nikki Buskey (though her opponent JJ Hermes has the waaay cooler name, and probably my support)

Now if you want, I know that the SG ticket Enough has a website. I'm not sure about I-ROC, Roundhouse Kick, Toga, or Super Mario Brothers...
