Former TX Blue Dog Charlie Stenholm on Blue Dogs and Health Care

by: Phillip Martin

Mon Aug 10, 2009 at 11:01 AM CDT

The Abilene Reporter News has an excellent, in-depth interview with former Democratic Congressman and Blue Dog Charlie Stenholm. The interview, titled, "Stenholm's 'Blue Dogs' show muscle in health plan debate" is worth a complete read-through. I wanted to highlight a section on health care and Blue Dogs, since that is so relevant to current discussions going on across the country (emphasis added):

Q. Blue Dogs have come under criticism for accepting contributions from that industry and then working to alter health care legislation, some think, by weakening the public health care option pushed by the administration. Do you think that criticism is deserved?

A: Let’s take political contributions out of our political system. If you can find a constitutional way to do that, I think it would be very, very positive. But right now, there is no constitutional way to remove contributions.

What I was quoted in many stories on is that it should not be a shock to anyone political contributions go to people who vote like the individual entity.

Business, labor union or any other organization that has a political action committee, they tend to support those who do vote their way most of the time. People do not contribute to people that vote against them.

Blue Dogs, as we started out talking about, they are the swing vote now on whether or not we’re going to pass center, right-of-center or left-of-center but close-to-the-center legislation on health care, on climate change, on energy policy, on agricultural policy, on health care policy, every policy.

So people and political action committees are contributing to Blue Dogs in the expectation that they will vote for something that is center, right of center and not too far left of center.

That’s a reasonable political expectation. And it’s all public.

And if Blue Dogs vote for the insurance industry to the detriment of the country or to the pharmaceutical industry to the detriment of the country or to the oil and gas interests to the detriment of the country, the people will judge them. And they will be unelected in 2010.

Mid-term elections for the party in power are always very interesting.

You really, really must read the whole interview here.

Charlie Stenholm for Secretary of Agriculture?

by: David Mauro

Wed Nov 12, 2008 at 00:23 AM CST

Earlier today we reported that Chet Edwards may be interested in joining President-elect Obama's cabinet as Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

Now, US News and World Report  is reporting that former Texas Congressman Charlie Stenholm could be under consideration for Secretary of Agriculture.

USN&WR is the first I have heard of Stenholm being a possible candidate.

With his experience on the House Agriculture Committee (if he was still in congress, I believe he would be the committee's chair), Stenholm would be an excellent secretary.

As Obama begins to name his cabinet and other senior officials, we will be sure to report on the Texans joining the new administration in Washington.

More Praise for Chet Edwards

by: Michael Hurta

Mon Aug 11, 2008 at 10:57 AM CDT

Just as we thought John Edwards' recent news might quiet all news about the possibility of Texan Chet Edwards joining a presidential ticket, the Dallas Morning News posts an article discussing future benefits for the Democrat who represents the President.  Mostly, it's a good article simply talking about Chet Edwards' future (Edwards for Senate 2010??), but it also had a good quote or two of others who think he might be a good choice.

Most obviously, former Abilene Rep. Charlie Stenholm:

As for vice president, Mr. Stenholm said that Ms. Pelosi's push makes sense, even if it "came out of the blue." He cited Mr. Edwards' analytical mind and even temperament and said that obscure or not, he'd make a better vice president than some of the folks on the Obama short list.

"He's just good at what he does," Mr. Stenholm said, "Chet has been - is - a real player, politically. Nothing would please me more than to see him on the ticket."

Meanwhile, Appropriations Chairman David Obey declared him one of the top 10 United States representatives, and Ken Bentsen said he could "absolutely" compete on a national stage.

Are we still allowed to juggle around the sound of Obama-Edwards 08?  Or should we just consider a possibility of Chet Edwards leading Democrats to an obvious Texas majority in 2010?

How Redistricting Hurt Texas

by: Matt Glazer

Thu Nov 16, 2006 at 02:46 PM CST

Texas has been the home for majority leaders, House Speakers, Presidents and Vice-Presidents alike, but with the recent national gains for the Democratic Party, Texas has still lost.

On October 20th of this year, Burnt Orange Report saw the writing on the wall. If Democrats won the majority, Texas would be the weakest it has ever been on the national stage.

Not only did Democrats win, the party took both chambers of Congress and relegated our ambitious and power hungry Texas Republicans to bench warmers.

For a quick example, in the past week our two Senators Kay Bailey and John Cornyn have moved up the Republican Leadership latter to become Chair of the Republican Policy Committee and Vice Chair of the Republican Conference respectively. Two major and influential positions... of the minority party. Super, too bad they can't direct policy nor help the state without bipartisan support.

How else did the redistricting truly harm Texas?
