Larry Joe Doherty, one of two challengers to Republican incumbent Mike McCaul in the 10th Congressional District, picked up an endorsement from 2006 U.S. Senate candidate Barbara Ann Radnofsky. From her endorsement:
I spent over two years and made over 600 trips traveling across this state to meet voters face-to-face. Texans are ready for change. Will we have leaders with the courage and conviction to lead the way?
The good news is, in the 10'th Congressional District, Democrat Larry Joe Doherty is such a candidate. For over 30 years, Larry Joe and I have been dear friends. He has been a steadfast leader of courage and conviction who has dedicated his life to upholding the rule of law. Known for his stance on legal ethics, accountability, and equality, Larry Joe’s voice is needed in Congress more than ever, and we have the opportunity to support his candidacy in the earliest stages when it matters the most.
How does the DSCC select its targeted candidates? The internal maneuvering and decision making within the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is probably quite a mystery to most of us who consider ourselves grassroots get-out-the-vote activists. What we do know is that using a complex set of criteria and insider judgments, the DSCC decides where to place their money in 2008 in an effort to get to a filibuster proof Senate.
While I'm a great advocate of people-powered campaigns, the frustration in the last months by so many of us on the inability of critical legislation to move in the Senate, even with Democratic control, makes me want to be sure that we move up the Democratic margin in that body considerably.
It's a joyous holiday season this December. But once again, I'm stuck on what to buy people. You can always buy socks or candy, but that is just so cliche. And Marshmallow Peeps have not come out with their wish list yet.
I've decided we need to help each other out with some political holiday gift ideas. So far, I have found one. I'm not sure if everyone would like it, but Amazon.com seems to think I would:
Barbara Ann Radnofksy might like it. Then again, maybe not. What are your gift ideas?
Get out and vote. Forget about sleeping until Wednesday. Do what you have to do to narrow the margins.
After voting a straight D ticket, go through the ballot and vote against any Republic where an alternative is possible, even if that alternative is not a Democrat. There are some cases in which Libertarians are running against the Republic candidates. Show the Republics in this state that they do not own us. They think they do, but they sure as heck do not.
U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and her two challengers, Barbara Ann Radnofsky and Scott Jameson, will take part in a debate Oct. 19, officials said today.
It is about time; took her a while. I've been annoyed with candidates that decide not to debate or hide from it. Democracy can exist perfectly without it, but democracy cannot be effective without it. I ideally and theoretically believe in democracy -- and I think our public servents who promote this democracy should do everything they can to make this democracy EFFICENT as well. Efficiency has always been the biggest theoretical attack against democracy; and if we want Democracy to grow throughout the world (as it seems like Kay Bailey and the majority of other American congressmen do), then we need to make sure democracy at home works.
Part of that is discussion of the government; and therefore part of that is debate. Kay Bailey Hutchison, John Culberson, and other GOP members wants to force democracy on Iraq? I have a better idea: insure that democracy is as good as possible in your own country first. I am not a fan of KB's, but I am glad she finally came to her senses about this. Others, like Rep. John Culberson, have not. Hopefully they will follow her lead...
Radnofsky, a Democrat from Houston, and Jameson, a Libertarian from Plano, had a debate Thursday in Houston and are planning another one Oct. 7 at Rice University. The San Antonio debate will be the first involving Hutchison, a Republican.
Jameson and Radnofsky should be congratulated for continuing in their voyage for democratic dominance even without the participation of the incumbent and favorite in the election. I'm glad we have a candidate nominated that won't let Kay Bailey stop her in the pursuit of great and powerful democracy!
O ya, the debate is in San Antonio.
The Oct. 19 debate will be taped at KLRN's studios and broadcast at 9 p.m.
UPDATE:
It turns out that Ms. Hutchison still hasn't quite COMPLETELY come to her senses, yet. While she may have finally realized that debating is good; she is still having second doubts. This is gravely dissappointing in such a known promoter of democracy in the UNITED STATES Senate.
Anyways, right after I posted about the Chronicle's article from the Associated Press, I look at the Texas Politics blog and notice that Clay Robinson reports that we shouldn't put this date in ink yet, but just pencil it in:
Hutchison consultant Bryan Eppstein said the senator had "tentatively" agreed to the debate, to be sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Texas, provided all the "logistics" are worked out.
To this, I shake my head. Someone popular enough to be a powerful United States Senator shouldn't balk at the things that benifit democracy, such as KBH is doing. Someone compotent enough to be a powerful United States Senator shouldn't be tentative about going through with something key to the democratic process. Ya; its true that the details aren't panned out yet - but I would like it more if my Senator would be confident and encouraged in her ability to get something like this done for Democracy. This is obviously not the case with the Republican incumbent. A shame...
that the Republican Party means more to her than her constituents in Texas.
After saying she would debate her opponents, Sen. Hutchinson said she could not attend as the Senate was still in session. Then why was Kay in Arizona campaigning for Republicans on September 22nd? Do the Republicans in Arizona mean more to our Senator than our concerns here in Texas?
We are in the last days of the 2006 election cycle and we need to work as hard as we can to get good candidates elected. The Bush Regime has made a mockery of America & everything this country should stand for. Music Row Democrats has put together a group of 20 songs for 20 dollars to help get good Democrats elected. The songs are fabulous and you can hear some of them on my podcast.
We are desperately trying to elect decent and caring individuals to represent Texas not only in the U.S. Senate and Congress but in State and local offices. We have thousands of people who need to be called just to try and do Voter ID. You can help no matter what state you live in.
