Open Thread Round-Up

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Sat Oct 28, 2006 at 10:18 PM CDT

Yes, believe your eyes. It's an Open Thread and a Texas Round-Up in one. Mindblowing.

  • I've created 2 new BlogAd strips here on BOR. One is a premium strip to run above the standard one at the left. The other is an exclusive strip for one ad to run just to the right. As you've noticed, there are a lot of ads right now so I'm creating some new options.

Please check out our advertisers too like the TDP, John Courage, the DCCC, and the DSCC.

  • Will you help John Courage get over $40,000 mark on the combined Netroots ActBlue page? The campaign is doing the last of its TV buys. They will be releasing an Ethics commercial on Monday.

  • Barak Obama was in Austin today for a book signing. Now that Mark Warner is supposedly out of the 2008 Presidential race, I have to say that I'm attracted to Obama. Of course, I'd more attracted if while he was in town, he'd lend aid to Texas Democrats. This is like the 3rd time he's been in Austin and done nothing publicly to help Texas Democrats while here.

You can now sound off about Texas' 35-31 win over Tech.

21,000 More Promises to Keep - John Courage ad

by: sonia

Fri Oct 27, 2006 at 10:45 AM CDT

(This ad was originally over a minute long and the struggle was to get at least one ad on the air before the election. Now the Courage Campaign has raised over $325,000 and the question is how long can this new 30 second ad stay on the air. Check it out and keep it on air! - promoted by Matt Glazer)

Valinda Bolton's TV Ad

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Fri Oct 20, 2006 at 03:57 PM CDT

Filmed in the district, this is a great ad. I have to say that I also found it cool that it was shot at Akins High School who's principal is Mary Alice Dieke, my former principal from back home in Fredericksburg.

Mary Beth Harrell Launches Ad

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Thu Oct 19, 2006 at 08:06 AM CDT

Done by Austin's Rindy Miller Media, Mary Beth Harrell is going on air with this powerful ad. Watch it below or linked here.

If you bookend that against this news segment, you can understand why I'd much rather have Mrs. Harrell in Congress than John "The Decider" Carter.

DemBones notes at Eye on Williamson what's going on with the Money Race.

Money race

Quarter ended September 30, 2006:

CARTER: Raised $207,257.08; Spent $98,425.98; COH $306,581.25
HARRELL: Raised $52,545.39; Spent $43,055.88; COH $43,297.03

This is one of those cases where you have a Delay district with a newer congressman that doesn't have a massive warchest like Lamar Smith. I'll echo Kuff's thoughts that if the DCCC were to drop even a couple hundred grand into this race as well as say Shane Sklar or Robert Ricketts- a lot could happen.

15 Second John Courage Ad

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Thu Oct 19, 2006 at 06:27 AM CDT

( - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

Here's a short 15 ad that will be rotated in district TV thanks to the new Courage Communication Director who has been able to get some great TV rates. Longer more message oriented ads will be available in a few days.

You may recognize the "honesty and integrity" line which is aimed at Republican leaning types who are open to an alternative. For Courage, the Nov 7 date is all about taking votes out from Lamar Smith to keep him under 50% which we now know is possible if we do this right. The ad was shot in Kerr County, recently added to the district but was in the old 21 that John ran in back in 2002.

One of of the most suprising things has been the stength of John Courage's fundraising ever since the re-re-redistricting of August 2006 (Yes, I counted it up, this is the 4th District 21 since 2000). From what I'm told, the campaign has raised over 275,000 to date which is simply amazing and the National Netroots endorsement has certainly helped. For me, that's an accomplishment I'd never have dreamed of 4 years ago when I was sitting at the County Fair for Courage out in Fredericksburg. (notice that huge yellow blob that was then District 21...)

Hank Gilbert Paper Endorsement

by: SADem

Thu Oct 19, 2006 at 00:55 AM CDT

Just happened to run across this from the Round Rock Leader:

Gilbert knows the issues
The race for Texas Agriculture Commissioner is a two-man contest, pitting Democrat Hank Gilbert against Republican Todd Staples.

There is no incumbent in this race. Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs - who was first elected in 1998 - has her sights set on being elected State Comptroller next month.

Gilbert and and Staples each bring their own background, experience and qualifications to the table, but after talking with both men we give the nod to Gilbert.

John Courage Ad: 18,000 More Promises

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Mon Aug 21, 2006 at 04:05 PM CDT

"...amidst the yellow ribbons and political speeches, we are only as good as the promises we keep." -John Courage, Veteran

At Veterans for Courage, the first and very powerful ad for John Courage has been released. While 1:15 length version is not cut yet for your 30/60 second TV spots, the message is more than powerful. I will be honest in saying that I'm a sucker for emotional political advertisements, but this one is made all the more effective by the harsh reality of it's message and the differences it highlights between John Courage and Lamar Smith.

Click here to watch online if not displaying above. We are adding this and any other campaign videos to our Burnt Orange Report YouTube Group.

Donate to John Courage. This man deserves to be in Congress.
