2007 Elections

Councilman Recalled in New Braunfels

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Sat May 12, 2007 at 11:23 PM CDT

I guess they want to keep partying down on the river without restrictions on the size of alcohol containers.

New Braunfels District Six city Councilman Ken Valentine was voted out of office, with 508 voting to recall him and 438 voting to keep him in place, according to unofficial results of a recall election.

Valentine has been an advocate of rules aimed at reducing drinking and rowdy behavior on the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers.

The city will hold a special election in November to fill his seat, which expires in May 2008.

Farmers Branch Passes Immigration Ordinance

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Sat May 12, 2007 at 10:39 PM CDT

(This is tragic... - promoted by Matt Glazer)

And it wasn't even close, passing 2-1. Here's a graphical map by precinct.

Voters in this Dallas suburb became the first in the nation today to prohibit landlords from renting to most illegal immigrants.

The ban was approved by a vote of 68 percent to 32 percent in final, unofficial returns.

"It says especially to Congress that we're tired of the out-of-control illegal immigration problem. That if Congress doesn't do something about it, cities will,'' said Tim O'Hare, a City Council member who was the ordinance's lead proponent.

The first such anti-illegal immigrant ordinance requires apartment managers to verify that renters are U.S. citizens or legal immigrants before leasing to them. Minors and people 62 and over are exempt from having to prove their immigration status or citizenship. Families that include citizens and illegal-immigrant members could lease if they meet three conditions: they're already tenants, heads of households or spouses are legally in the U.S., and the family includes only a spouse, their minor children or parents.

Property managers or owners who break the rule face a misdemeanor charge punishable by a fine of up to $500.

Opponents plan to seek a restraining order to stop the city from enforcing it and try to get the case to trial.

SA Results

by: Jose Blasquez

Sat May 12, 2007 at 09:24 PM CDT

Phil Hardberger earns himself a 2nd term with 77% of the vote.

With 3 precincts remaining Mary Alice Cisneros has won her husband's old council seat, with an underwhelming 62% of the vote against two underfunded, not very well known opponents.

City Council Districts 5 and 8 are looking to go to run-offs.  The qualifiers have yet to be decided as the 2nd and 3rd place candidates are within 20 votes of each other in both races.

The $550 million bond package passes easily.

by: RandySF

Fri May 11, 2007 at 02:53 PM CDT

(Get out there Houston...or else we *will* have a problem. ;) - promoted by KT)

Tomorrow, the people of Houston can drive a nail in the coffin of the Tom Delay era. Melissa Noriega, wife of State Representative and potential Senate candidate Rick Noriega, is running for the at-large Houston City Council seat vacated by Shelley Sekula Gibbs when temporarily filled Delay's Congressional seat. Now, I am sure some of you wonder what credentials she holds other than her last name, I can assure you they are abundant.
