Hope all is well with you and yours on this (slightly) cooler day in New Jersey - how's the weather where you are? Well, anyway, if you're a Republican office-holder right now, you're likely in hot water regardless of where you are. (Cue flashing "laugh" sign) And this is especially true of Texas' Aging Prom Queen, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Perjury? What perjury?), whose Senate seat will be occupied by Barbara Ann Radnofsky starting in 2007 (http://www.radnofsky...).
Anyway, Kay Bailey recently double faulted on two issues, of which one whopper of a lie made it to the NY Times. Her recent inanity, plus Barbara Ann's sharp retorts, is covered below. Enjoy!
Note: I am a friend of Barbara Ann Radnofsky, who's running to replace the "aging cheerleader", Kay Bailey Hutchison in the US Senate from Texas.
"Politics," Hubert Humphrey once said, "Is the art of the possible." He meant that while you must never compromise your beliefs, you must compromise to get legislation passed on occasion. And then there's Kay Bailey Hutchison (R/VA...err,TX), who apparently has warped that statement into "Politics is the art of making a fool out of yourself."
You see, Kay Bailey - the aging prom queen of Texas - has been trying to broker a compromise between the deuling lobbyists of American and Southwest Airlines. Her proposal to repeal the "Wright Amendment" (after ex-Speaker Jim Wright) has sadly (for her) been annihilated in Congress.
This is the last day of Sen. Boxer's contest, and Barbara Ann remains in the top 4. Please help us win and qualify for fundraising help. It's free and easy.
Thanks to all who have contributed. You can see the first one in Dallas -- within the coming week -- at the intersection of Harry Hines Boulevard and Market Center Boulevard, and three more in East Texas (specific location details to come).
The pandering candidacy of Carole Strayhorn continues. Last month included embarrassing interviews (check these out – they sound like an SNL skit, not a real candidate trying to be taken seriously) about sex education and intelligent design.
Carole’s hilarity this week is her stance on public education. Since February, Strayhorn has made the following public statements about school vouchers. See if you can put them in order chronologically:
“I still support vouchers”
"I will veto any bill that puts a single dollar into any voucher program, period"
"I'm not saying that I would never support them"
“I’ll fill in the details later”
Strayhorn is a Republican trying to play independent, or so we think. It is possible, however, that she doesn’t even know what she believes – based on her campaign thus far, no one else does. This week she finally decided she was against vouchers, even though her entire career has indicated a contradicting belief. Her pathetic attempt to lure the teachers’ vote is the reason for her contra face on vouchers. If money speaks louder than words, then look no further than who she is accepting money from:
Since 2000, James Leininger, a major donor of the voucher movement, has made four contributions to Mrs. Strayhorn totaling $100,000. In addition, he secured a loan of $950,000 to then-Carole Keeton Rylander’s first campaign for comptroller. In return, she supported a 1999 voucher measure and signed a letter using the Comptroller’s state seal to raise money for a Leininger-founded, pro-voucher think tank.

Re: education, Rick Perry’s lack of pragmatism is on display once again. While Chris Bell was in Corpus at the state VFW conference affirming his support for veterans and healthcare, Perry was in Austin getting resistance from teachers for his virulent education policy. While Perry continues to praise the benefit of his archaic standardized test regime, teachers, administrators, parents and education experts continue to denounce the test-only curriculum as a fallacy. Like usual, Rick Perry isn’t listening.
This is what Dr. Linda McNeil, the Co-Director of the Center for Education at Rice University, has to say about Texas’s public schools under Rick Perry:
“Testing has pushed the state into substituting a bogus curriculum of test practice for a real, academically challenging, and instructionally productive curriculum."
Check out what education in Texas will look like with Chris Bell as Governor here and here.
Great job and a sincere thanks to everyone who voted for the Texas ticket on map changers. Start your engines, round 3 begins later today. The winner hosts a fancy fundraiser with Mark Warner. Lets make that happen. Vote for Chris Bell.
