TX State Convention Bloggers Caucus

by: annatopia

Hey everybody!  I would like to tell you about an event that's in the works for the weekend of the Texas Democratic State Convention.

We are planning to hold the First Annual Bloggers Caucus, and you're all invited.

First, I hope that those of you who are unable to attend YearlyKos have already attended your Senate District Convention and become delegates.  If you didn't, don't worry!  You can still come to the convention in Fort Worth as an observer/visitor.

I have decided to take an extended blog hiatus in order to devote time to planning this event.  We only have a month and it's looking like this is going to be huge.

Basically, we'd like to keep this event informal.  We have decided to hold the caucus at the Flying Saucer in Fort Worth, which not only has wireless internet access, it is also only a few blocks from the convention site (map).

We're inviting all statewide and federal candidates to join us for the meet-n-greet.  We've already got a committment from the one and only David Van Os and I've reached out to some local D/FW candidates.  I'm going to start making the calls and invitations later this afternoon.

What we are trying to do is work out a timeframe for the event.  Here is the tentative convention schedule:

Thursday, June 8

2 p.m.  State Democratic Executive Committee Meeting, Hilton Hotel

6 p.m.  Convention Kick-Off Reception, Hilton Hotel (Purchase individual tickets for $50 per person by clicking here)

Friday, June 9

9 a.m.  Caucus Meetings, Convention Center

10 a.m.  Credentials Distribution begins, Convention Center

3 p.m.  Senate District Caucus Meetings, Convention Center

6 p.m.  Call to Order, Convention Center

Saturday, June 10

8 a.m.  Permanent Convention Committees Meet, Convention Center (Rules, Platform, Resolutions and Nominations for SDEC and Party Officers)

8:30 a.m. Blue Star Breakfast, Convention Center (Reserve your seat now!  Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased here)

9:30 a.m. Workshops, Convention Center

11 a.m.  Convention reconvenes, Convention Center

Now here is what I'm thinking.  We have three options for this event:

First, Thursday eve, competing w/the kickoff reception.
upsides: our event will be FREE and we are much cooler than those stuffed shirts, $50 gets you a lot of beer at the flying saucer
downsides:  candidates will probably want to atted the reception, many conventioneers may be arriving late thursday night or early friday morning, crowded at the flying saucer

Friday between 11am and 2pm
upsides: most people will have checked in by then, candidates may have free blocks of time during these hours, flying saucer should not be crowded at this time
downsides: none that i can think of since the FS is right down the street from the convention site

Sunday: noon
upsides: no convention events currently scheduled, so that might mean high attendence
downsides: many conventioneers and candidates may have scheduled return trips home early sunday

I am leaning towards Friday afternoon, but please don't let that influence your vote.  What I'd like is some input from this community.  When should we hold the Bloggers Caucus?

I'll keep track of the votes cast here and at Texas Kos.  I'm also taking input via email.  Feel free to chime in, and if you are working with or volunteering for a Texas candidate, please send me their contact information so I can invite them.

Thanks for your input and suggestions!

please vote in this poll.  this blogger caucus is for YOU, so please let us know what time you think is best for the event.

I already voted over at Tkos. (0.00 / 0)
Don't want to stuff the ballot box, so to speak.

Before you win, you have to fight. Come fight along with us at TexasKaos.

The Problem With Friday Afternoon (0.00 / 0)
The problem with Friday afternoon is that those caucus meetings, if structured anything like 2004, will run from 9am to about 2:30 (just in time for the SD caucuses, where the *real* work of the convention takes place).

Conversely, by Sunday afternoon everyone figures to be *LONG* gone... the convention typically adjourns around 5pm on Saturday.  By, say, 1pm on Sunday I am hoping to be in or near Amarillo (en route to Boise).

Obviously, now you know where that first vote for Thursday night came from :)

One other alternative: meet Friday night *after* the opening floor show/keynote (John Edwards again, afaik) while the Credentials committee is doing it's dirty work....

that's helpful (0.00 / 0)
(as i said at tkos)

you know, i wonder if maybe saturday night might be a better option.

the only thing i worry about on that count is that friday nights at the saucer are super crowded.

i dunno.  i am going to give them a call this weekend and see if there's any way we can reserve a room for a friday night.

Friday, Friday, Friday (0.00 / 0)
did I say Friday?

I voted Thursday (0.00 / 0)
Convention business begins Friday morning at 9 am, and there's lots of overlap among desired (or required) caucuses and meetings for those of us who are delegates.

Sunday afternoon is too late.

Thursday's the best option, and probably from the standpoint of a suitable venue (less competition from convention and non-convention parties).

Just my .02 ...

(Now going over to T-Kos to vote and post)

Don't let the Blue Dogs getcha down. Primary them.

thursday evening... (0.00 / 0)
set it for around 8:00 and it should be fine.
