According to Quorum Report, Will Hartnett, John Smithee, and Tom Craddick are all encouraging Craddick loyalists to vote for Joe Straus January 13.
Phil King (R-Weatherford) concurred in a followup email. King wrote, "Friends, I agree that we should all vote "green" on the 13th. It has always been a courtesy to vote "for" the Speaker on the final ballot of a speakers race. The race is over. Voting "green" is a tradition we should continue.
Because of the campaign Straus ran, the bipartisan coalition behind him, and the fact he is still reaching out to elected officials, it is hard to see how Straus won't get all 150 members to vote aye.
150 - 0 is something Craddick never accomplished. Even in his first session as Speaker Democrat Lon Burnam voted against Craddick and paid the price. However he stood by the courage of his convictions and voted against one of the most polarizing figures in Texas politics. |
