Gattis Files for Speaker, Craddick Loses Control of Caucus

by: Matt Glazer

Add another one to the list.

Dan Gattis has told the Austin American Statesman's Laylan Copelin he is running for speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.

The Statesman has pointed out that Gattis was one of Craddick's lieutenants during the 2007 session but has been uncommitted since the November election.

On Wednesday Burka discussed Gattis as one of the, "none filers" but possibilities.

Staying with the non-filers, what about Gattis? He is one of the most talented members of the House. He didn't have a good meeting with the Democrats-he stuck up for Keel-and some of them see him as a stalking horse for Craddick. I worry that Gattis doesn't have enough seasoning to assume a leadership responsibility, or whether he is willing to smooth the rough edges of his ideology. Some members regard him as brash and abrupt. So what? Talent covers a multitude of shortcomings.

One of two things is happening: 1) Republicans smell blood in the water and are leaving Craddick to create their own political power, or 2) Craddick is playing a game. He could be getting his lieutenants to run for Speaker so he can have some sort of control in the 81st Session or at the very least be a king maker to a more conservative speaker.

Regardless of why Gattis is in, it is becoming clear Craddick doesn't have the votes.  He is either creating a safety net for himself or can't even keep his most vocal supports from challenging him.

Craddick's Game (0.00 / 0)
The interests that fund Craddick's Speakership are ready to live and fight another day after the end of his power. Texans for Lawsuit Reform has been prepared for a post-Craddick era since the closing days of the last session.
During the 2008 elections, Craddick had all the political resources he needed to keep himself in power. Craddick had a great Primary and a disasterous General Election. Craddick lost his Speaker's race on November 8 when he couldn't elect his own House coalition.
Look for an effort by a Craddick minion such as Gattis as a replacement friendly to the current Speaker's interests; with or without Craddick's personal support.
It is not likely that either Gattis or another Craddick clone could command substantial Democratic support. This appears to be an effort by lobby interests to keep Craddick's money men in power.

So who has the votes? (0.00 / 0)
Doesn't appear anyone has the votes. They certainly don't have the votes that Craddick does have.  Divide and conquer. In the end, everyone will fall in line and vote for Craddick. Simply because no one else will have the votes to defeat him.

For the first time in years (0.00 / 0)
we have not seen a press release on the day after the November General Election that Craddick has sufficient commitments to be elected, or re-elected, as Speaker.

Let's make something REAL and tangible of all this for the people of Texas, by ending the experiment with electric rates, and with our lives.  We should not have to pay any more per Kw.H. than is paid in places like Oklahoma and Arkansas.
