Congressman Michael McCaul for TX Attorney General??

by: David Kobierowski

Wed Nov 26, 2008 at 03:42 PM CST

I attended Jim Mattox's funeral services yesterday at First Baptist Church in Austin.

After leaving the funeral, I was told that Congressman Michael McCaul attended.  I cannot confirm this because I did not see him there, but the church was completely filled, with probably 1,000+ people with standing room only, so it was very difficult to see individual faces in the large crowd.

I left a message for his Washington office, asking if he was in attendance.  If so, I want to thank him for attending.

But even more interesting are the rumors I've been hearing that Congressman McCaul is considering a run for TX Attorney General.

In my message to McCaul's office I also asked if their office can comment on this.

Has anyone else heard this?  Any thoughts on this??

He would likely be a good choice by the Republican party, based on his bio.  Which means we need to start campaigning for the Democrat (Patrick Rose? or Barbara Ann?) asap.

Here's a paragraph from his bio:

Prior to coming to Congress, Michael McCaul served as Chief of Counter Terrorism and National Security in the U.S. Attorney's office in Texas, and led the Joint Terrorism Task Force charged with detecting, deterring and preventing terrorist activity. Congressman McCaul also served as Texas Deputy Attorney General under current U.S. Senator John Cornyn, and served as a federal prosecutor in the Department of Justice's Public Integrity Section in Washington, D.C.

David Mauro wrote in his Nov. 17th, 08' post, http://www.burntorangereport.c...  that Barbara Ann Radnofsky was looking at this run.  Barbara Ann told me directly "yes, I'm looking at it" a long while back at a People for the American Way event, so sounds like it's coming together...but we'll need to get this campaign in gear asap.

In David Mauro's above blog post, he mentioned speculation of Michael Williams, RR Commissioner, or Rep. Will Hartnet(R-Dallas) as potential Repub candidates.

Let me know if anyone has heard about McCaul's potential running.  Again, I have not heard back from McCaul's office yet, therefore this is only speculation by a few unofficial sources that have shared this info with me.

Best,
David Kobierowski

Rep. McCaul Did Attend Mattox's Funeral (0.00 / 0)

I read in Page 4, Metro section, today's Austin American-Statesman, Nov. 26th, 08':

The Democratic-heavy crowd included U.S. Rep Michael McCaul, R-Austin, who said Mattox hired him at the state after he graduated from law school.

I've heard McCaul's name come up (0.00 / 0)
The GOP will have a crowded primary. The names I've heard are Michael Williams, Dan Branch, and Mike McCaul. Haven't heard Hartnett's name. He's now only in a 55% GOP district and will likely have a good Democratic opponent, so he could be putting his toe in the water.

I haven't heard Patrick Rose for AG, but for Land Commissioner.

Thx Phil. I can see Rep. Rose doing well as Land Commissioner. (0.00 / 0)

And I just saw Patrick at an event last week...and didn't ask.  I'll try to confirm shortly.

I'm concerned about McCaul because he's done fairly well (doesn't have any major marks against him, he even voted against the Bail-out package, which was a smart move on his part), has a ton of $ to tap into, and has a good resume to run for AG.

Dems need to get organized around the AG position pronto.

We'll need a solid Dem in this position if we want to have leverage with redistricting in 2011.

Lets take back Jim's seat!

Best,
David

It makes sense for him to run (0.00 / 0)
I heard rumors around election time, but nothing since.

McCaul has never shown much interest either in connecting with constituents or in working on policy. He's a loyal GOP vote, but isn't a "true believer" conservative eager to fight the Dems. His rise in the GOP hierarchy seems to have stalled, and there's not a heckuva lot that a minority party back-bencher can actually accomplish in Congress. It's a dead end job, and he may be getting bored with it.

Being AG, on the other hand, means an interesting job, lots of prestige, and a good shot at higher office. Heck, he might even be good at it.

BTW, McCaul isn't remotely scared of not being reelected in 2010.  If Larry Joe Doherty couldn't come within 10% of him in a very Democratic year, he's safe until redistricting. But look out in 2012!
