Burt Solomons (R) Files for Speaker

by: Phillip Martin

Tue Nov 18, 2008 at 10:39 AM CST

UPDATE: Not Craddick - 76,  Craddick Ceiling - 62, Toss-Up - 12

  • Previous Tally: Not Craddick 74, Craddick Ceiling 63, Toss-Up 13

  • Rep. Al Edwards declared his support for Rep. Turner, moving him out of Craddick's camp to "Not Craddick"

  • Rep. Solomons declares his candidacy for Speaker, moving him out of "Toss-Up" and to "Not Craddick"

  • Based on public documentation, the new tally of where House Members stand on the Speaker's race is: New Tally: Not Craddick - 76,  Craddick Ceiling - 62, Toss-Up - 12

I reported last week that Rep. Solomons (R) was not in Craddick's camp. Looks like I was right.

Republican State Rep. Burt Solomons has filed for Speaker, according to the Texas Ethics Commission.

Rep. Solomons (R) had the following to say (from Trailblazers blog -- go there to read his full statement):

"I did file this morning. I believe it's time for a change," he said. "We are in a position now, as Republicans and for the entire body, to have a different governing style. ... I've been a past supporter of Tommy (Craddick), I like him, but I think it's a whole different management style. I've had a number of members calling me about problems they forsee. We (the GOP) have been trying to govenrm the House and we're at a crucial turning point, and I think it's time to let another Republican - since we have a slim majority - have a shot at how we're going to govern."

As I reported in my post on the Speaker's race last week, Rep. Solomons had been considered a "Toss-Up" for his previous statements about not enjoying how Craddick ran the House. From a May 27, 2007 article in the Dallas Morning News:

"This will be dealt with in the rules next session," said House Financial Institution Chairman Burt Solomons, R-Carrollton, who carried the House rules through its ratification in January and said it was "never the intent of the rules" to give the speaker absolute authority. "Whether I do it again, or someone else does. But it will be dealt with."

Tom Craddick & Dave Carney -- still waiting on your numbers.

That moves Craddick from 74 public opponents and 13 tossups to - drumroll please - 75 public opponents and 12 tossups.  Ain't no way for Craddick to get to 76 when 75 members are against him.

76... (0.00 / 0)
Rep. Edwards said he supports Rep. Turner -- and he had been in Craddick's tally before.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

PRETTY OBVIOUS (0.00 / 0)
It is pretty obivious that Craddick is done! Next task is to mend a very fractured Democratic caucus in order to devise a unified plan that will elect the best possible Speaker for all Texas Democrats.

I've been waiting for Solomons to enter the race (0.00 / 0)
He would have my support if I were a member of the House.

Great work... (0.00 / 0)
... as always, but one major critique: you cannot count Al Edwards, Sly Turner, et al, as Craddick opponents - you just can't.  Turner's odds are slim and nil of picking up any votes outside of the African-American caucus, and those are already divided with Ms. Thompson.  As someone already commented, Turner supporters will kowtow to Craddick the second Turner decides the moment is right and tells them to do so.

I don't know (0.00 / 0)
I'm going to give Rep. Turner the benefit of the doubt. I was sincere when I wrote that I'm no longer using that term (C D's) any more.

I trust Rep. Turner is running for his own candidacy.

Turner is counted as a tossup.  Al Edwards personally emailed Phillip to take his name off the Craddick supporter list, so Phillip is just taking him at his word.

Heading down the road you outline gets us into doubting the motives of some members, which isn't constructive at this point.  I also wouldn't say Turner's support is restricted to the black caucus, he has friends on both sides of the aisle of all colors.  The old divisions in the Dem caucus aren't along racial lines, they are along leadership lines.

At this point, presenting a united front is the best medicine, as is putting aside the old fault lines.  We'll have plenty of time down the road to form circular firing squads and back bite.  For now though, as far as I'm concerned, if a member says they are against Craddick, then they are against Craddick and for change.

Regardless, without Edwards, Solomons makes 75 and seals the deal.
