Dean Prepares to Step Down as DNC Chair

by: Matt Glazer

Tue Nov 11, 2008 at 08:51 AM CST

The Huffington Post is reporting that Governor Howard Dean will step down as Democratic National Committee Chairman after serving just one term.

Dean, who has been serving in the post since 2005, has said in the past that he would serve only one term, though his successful work with the Obama campaign had led some Democrats to wonder whether he would stay on into the next administration. This won't be the case, officials at the DNC confirm. He will serve as chair until his term ends in January. The party will settle on a new head when it hosts a meeting during the week of Obama's inauguration.

The Huff Post is also reporting a name being floated around as a possible Dean replacement is one of the president-elect's closest allies: Claire McCaskill, the junior Senator from Missouri and a national co-chair of the Obama campaign.

The key for states like Texas will be if the next chair will remain committed to the 50 State Strategy.  It has absolutely relieved the burden on local and regional organizations to help organize 254 counties and helped turn Texas blue.

Going into a redistricting year, regardless of who chairs the party infrastructure, we need national support to protect big gains in red and purple states.

In the opening, don't you mean "term" instead of "year"? The quote contradicts the first line.

Just sayin'

shaking the rust off my blogging.  Needed a break and clearly my brain hasn't caught up yet.

50 State Strategy (4.00 / 2)
President Obama's campaign definitely recognized the need to expand the playing field.

I'm going to miss Howard on the national scene (5.00 / 1)
But there is something to be said for leaving at the top.  I would love for him to stay but it's up to him to decide what he wants to do.

Thank you Howard Dean! - It was you first convinced us "we had the power".  And yes we did, we used our power this election.

Thanks Governor Dean for helping us Take Back America! (3.00 / 1)

I have just read with profound sadness that Howard Dean will step down in January. While we all "oooh and awwe" about President Elect Obama's campaign I hope everyone will give Howard Dean the credit due. His use of the internet and belief in the 50 state strategy is what has brought us to where we are today. Thank you, Governor Dean. Everyone should make a donation to the DNC and Democracy for America in his name today. Maybe the the amount should be $50.50 for the 50 state strategy, and if you can't affort that, how about $5.50 for the next 5 months or 50 months! Please go here ant donate to the fundraising page I have started at the DNC. I am trying to raise $5,000.50 in his honor.

I know many of you do not have the experience my husband and I have from way back in 2002 when Howard Dean just announced he'd be running for president. He came to Texas to collect an award from the Stonewall Democrats for signing Civil Unions into law in Vermont. He wanted to hook up with a campaign while he was in our fair city of San Antonio. My husband was the Democratic Candidate for Congress in one of the most republican of republican areas. Howard came and spent two days with my husband. He hung out in our campaign office, talked to voters, and did blockwalking. It was marvelous. He was very supportive. When the election was over; and of course it was a rout in the republican's favor; there was an encouraging handwritten note from Howard Dean sent our way.
He won our hearts and we embarked on 1 year campaign of Meetups and Dean Events pushing our candidate for president, Howard Dean. We met many wonderful people who became activists who went on to support John Kerry and stay active for the four long years until our terrific Senator Obama has been elected.

Howard Dean assumed the helm of the Democratic Party during that time and he held us together and he pushed the 50 state strategy. I can vouch for the good of that strategy. We had 4 paid field organizers in Texas to help get our organization together. We are now within one seat of taking back the Texas House. He has never waivered from the belief that no state is worth writing off.

I appreciate his leadership through our trying but exciting primary season and his insistance that our party abide by its rules. This was only fair and the way to be democratic.

Governor Dean, John Courage and Zada True-Courage of San Antonio, TX thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your hard work, dedication and wise leadership. We know you will not be stepping far from the political scene. We wish you were staying but we also realize the energy you have put forth these last six years is extraordinary and you and your family deserve a break!

Thank you so much.

Democratically Yours,

Zada & John

Maybe there's a place for Dr. Dean (0.00 / 0)
in the Obama administration.

We do need to work for some minor changes with the arrangements to help participants at the National Conventions.  Dr. Dean did support my proposal to see that all members of the Platform Committee had a copy of the Committee Report.  I was able to post it on my web page very quickly.  (In 2000 and 2004, everything was delayed.) I also saw to it that committee members representing Texas were not seated at the very back of the committee room again.
