| Good government is always a good idea. Proposition 1 was proposed by the city and is designed to ensure the city auditor is kept away from political pressure.
The city auditor is the person in charge of investigating questionable and wasteful spending as well as fraud. It seems like it would be a good idea to insulate this person from any outside political pressures.
Currently, the City Auditor can be removed from their office at any time with a simple majority vote in Council. If passed, Proposition 1, will require at least 6 of the 7 council members to vote in favor of removing the city auditor and will make the position a fixed, five year term. At the end of 5 years, if the person is doing their job and the council wants them to stay on, it will only take a simple majority to keep them on board.
These changes will allow the city auditor to investigate corruption and waste freely and without fear of losing their job.
Burnt Orange Report is unanimous in its support for Proposition 1. Sunshine and transparency are always a good thing in government. Almost as important is making sure those investigating fraud, corruption, or waste, aren't afraid of losing their jobs or getting caught up in a political fight. This proposition is a common sense approach to good government.
Proposition 1 will not only protect the city auditor it will protect our city.
