Hays County Obama Car Vandalized on Eve of Early Voting

by: wagwa

Mon Oct 20, 2008 at 11:57 PM CDT

(This is ridiculous. - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

In western Hays County, at around 8PM Sunday night 19 October, thugs trashed my car while I was having dinner with some friends.

My "Obama 08" bumper sticker was torn off the right rear bumper, a 20-lb rock was dropped through the back window, 2 stolen Obama yard signs were shoved through the gaping hole in the window, and a cryptic almost "OBAHA" (or something...) was scrawled in orange spray-paint on the drivers side front and back doors and windows.

I am considering driving it around Austin town just like this until election day as a political statement.  What say you?

Yes, this has been blogged here at Mock Paper Scissors  (Thank YOU TexBetsy!) and here by Fran I Am as well as a diary very much like this (mine) at DKos.  Sorry if you've had to look at the same atrocity twice!

I have to hand it to the Hays county deputies for getting out to the scene of the crime quickly, and making sure to dust everything for fingerprints -- and, particularly, (in these dark days) for taking the matter seriously.

Also Kudos go to the WimDems (the Wimberley Democrats) who  have been individually and collectively so supportive.

A piccie showing the signs that were shoved in through the hole in the window as well as the spray painting.

Our Democratic Party Precinct Chair brought this incident to the attention of the Hays County Sheriff:

I just saw the sheriff and told him about it. He really flinched. Said "That is not what we mean by America." Don't know if anyone will get caught but hope so.

The incident has also been reported to watchdog@barackobama.com and to our representatives in the campaign in Hays and Travis counties but only a canned response so far.

Big Rock went through that. We still have the rock.

Disgusting display of hate (3.00 / 1)
This may be one explantion:

Yahoo News 10/21/08
Hate-filled attacks on Obama have many roots
(snip)
Analysts see anger rooted in a number of societal factors, some cultural, some political.

"A great many people think they're about to lose power. The world is changing around them, and they can't stop that change. So their anger is boiling over," said Mark Potok, the director of the intelligence project at the Southern Poverty Law Center , which tracks hate groups.

Sorry about your car. (3.00 / 1)
I had my tires slashed a few weeks ago, and my cousin had a rock thrown through the back of his windshield when his car was parked on campus (he had Obama signs in the back).

I guess they attack cars because its the only kind of thing they value (0.00 / 0)
Very sorry about the tire slashing and the rocks directed at your car and your cousins!

But I think the more coverage incidents like this get the better -- so that people thinking about doing something like this think twice.  Or three times.  And then think better of it, to become their better selves.  Hoping they can value that, their conscience  more in the future!

This could get more attention (3.00 / 1)
You should submit an iReport on CNN, I bet this could get some coverage.  Or even contact local Austin news, I bet they'd have interest.  It seems like anti-Obama people have been stealing signs rampantly, and committing vandalism pretty crazily.  It really shows how afraid they are.

May have found them... (0.00 / 0)
