Cornyn Politicizes Hurricane Dolly

by: David Mauro

Thu Jul 24, 2008 at 06:35 PM CDT

According campaign press release yesterday, John Cornyn has asked Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to support a "bill would allow county governments in the Rio Grande Valley to repair an outdated levee system and be reimbursed by the federal government."

Problem is, Big John, the storm already hit.

As the Houston Chronicle's Clay Robison put it:

A little late for this storm, though, don't ya think?

To be fair, both parties probably should have been doing more to address the problem, but for Cornyn to issue a press release touting a worthless gesture is just not helpful.

Cornyn joined Rick Perry in Weslaco earlier today to take a helicopter tour of the damage.

Of course, this isn't the first time Perry has toured areas damaged by a hurricane. In 2005, he joined President Bush's Blackhawk tour of Hurricane Rita's aftermath.

But this is an election year and, in John Cornyn's eyes, nothing says "I care" more than riding in a helicopter and issuing partisan campaign press releases.

Our thoughts are with all our readers in the Rio Grande Valley right now. The Rio Grande Guardian has had some excellent coverage of the storm.

Cornyn is getting more and more plastic (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for the info David. It seems that Cornyn is working harder and harder to make every event a political statement. Then again he is running for re-election and keeping his name in the news as a caring senator is critical.

His call for off-shore drilling as a means to fix the energy cost situation shows he's even more out of touch with the issues. Even people in his own party have stated any results of this cannot be realized for years to come. If anything, it might settle the speculators down which proves even more that the price of oil is driven by people without a stake in the matter.

Cornyn does call for alternative energy but you'd be crazy not to these days. Not calling for alternatives on this election cycle would be suicide.
