Veep Watch: Chet Edwards

by: Michael Hurta

Thu Jul 24, 2008 at 02:00 PM CDT

It was only about a month ago when Chet Edwards' name originally graced the lips of Nancy Pelosi as a possible Vice President of the United States.  With the possibility of Barack Obama announcing his decision within a couple weeks, one of Texas' own hasn't quite left the rumor mill.

On July 10, the Dallas Morning News editorialized that "Obama's vetters would do well to consider how attractive a running mate with the background, centrist record and likable personality of Chet Edwards would make the Democratic ticket to swing voters."

About a week later, the representative was pushed into "I wish I could say more," a sign that he might actually be getting some vetting by the Obama campaign.  Chet's tight lips left Carl Leubsdorf speculating why Ms. Pelosi mentioned him in the first place.  And Howard Dean visited Crawford - he gave some nice words, too.  Oh, and did we mention he can campaign and reel in the cash?

So where are we at today?  Not far from a month ago.  Chet Edwards remains a long-shot choice, and he's really not being cheered on by many but Nancy Pelosi.

Perhaps, though, we should keep close watch for his name in the news.  Although his chances of being picked remain unlikely, there's reason to keep him on the radar screen.

The picking of Senators are slim.  With the party margins so small, Obama may be dissuaded from picking a moderate who works across the aisle in a seat that isn't solidly Democrat.  Unfortunately, most solidly Democrat seats aren't held by those known to work across the aisle.  So, if Mr. Obama intends to pick a national legislator known for surpassing partisanship, Mr. Edwards probably is on the short list.

The 1970s were the last time a Texas man was absent from the presidential tickets, and it would take luck for it to happen again this November.  But it's definitely not out of the question.

Edwards and the Brazos Valley (5.00 / 1)
I have paid close attention to the new about Congressman Chet Edwards as a possible running mate for Senator Barack Obama, and although he is not who I think Senator Obama will pick for a running mate I think he warrants consideration. Congressman Edwards is my representative, and I can tell you from personal experience that any Democratic politician that can be elected by 16 points in the Brazos Valley one of the most conservative places in Texas (home of Texas A&M and Baylor Universities), could be a benefit for Senator Obama.

Yes we can, begins today.

I hope it is a short list (2.67 / 3)
that has been thrown in the garbage.  Chet Edwards is the last person I would ever pick as a vp and I think Obama is much too smart to make that mistake.

Reasons for not picking Edwards (3.00 / 1)
I appreciate your opinion regarding Edwards and personally I don't have a solid opinion.  However with a statement like "last person I would ever pick" there has to be some underlying reasons why not. It would be great in the spirit of BOR to provide some of those reasons, if anything to drive the debate or understanding.

I'm curious, too (3.00 / 3)
The only major negative I see with Chet Edwards is that he has been in Washington for a long time, which goes a bit against Obama's message from the insanely long primary.

We would lose a seat in the House, too -- but that's easier for the party than losing a senate seat, or even losing a governorship.

Longevity in DC could be a good thing also (3.00 / 2)
Having Edwards as the VP could help Obama navigate the maze that makes up Washington politics. He could help in shepherding the votes for the administration due to his ties to lawmakers. Even though Obama advocates change in DC, you still have to deal with Capitol Hill.

I also like Elsbeth's comments on Edwards support of VA issues. As the war winds down in Iraq we will have a large number of vets who will integrate back into the civilian sector. Having someone who understands vet issues and can advocate for them in the administration will be a critical need. Lord knows this administration has been remiss in looking out for them. The stories are endless in that area.

It could also provide some chaos for McCain here in Texas as we would have a Texan on the ticket. That might force McCain to come to Texas more to defend this Republican goldmine of electoral votes. Anything to keep him out of the battleground states to defend the mother lode is a good thing.

Now if that happens and he won wouldn't Perry have to appoint a rep for the district then call a special election? What's the "morning after" situation if Edwards became VP?

WTF? (0.00 / 0)
To make that kind of a disparaging remark against one of the most honorable/effective Democrats in TX without anything to back it up is a really low blow.

That's why we "kindly" asked for some background information (5.00 / 1)
Let's give refinish69 a chance to provide the information. I would also challenge you to provide some reasons to support Edwards other than "most honorable/effective Democrats." Surely you have some great reasons that Edwards would have earned that compliment.  Offer them into the discussion here.

It makes perfect sense (3.00 / 2)
A conservative Democrat from Texas with strong legislative experience (particularly with VA issues) in Washington.

His February 11, 2008 op-ed in the Dallas News is outstanding!

And then there are the Vets for Chet. This Waco Tribune Herald story is from way back in '05:

"The Waco VA Hospital's expertise in treating post traumatic stress disorder should be utilized as soldiers from nearby Fort Hood return to civilian life after serving in Iraq."

Edwards and others hope to enhance the Waco VA Hospital mission as a specialized center for mental health and PTSD treatments amid federal scrutiny of the hospital's cost, importance and future.

Initially targeted for closure, then downsizing, the Waco hospital is now under study by a panel of federal officials and Waco civic leaders, assigned by VA Secretary Jim Nicholson to craft future uses for the hospital.

Edwards' committee also increased the VA budget by 9 percent over last year and required that 20 percent of the VA's $397 million research budget focus on mental health, amounting to almost $80 million. [Emphasis added.]

Nancy's right. What an outstanding choice he would be. :)

Edwards (3.00 / 1)
(Chet) Edwards is also a graduate of Harvard (like Obama). And he represents Crawford, Texas to boot.

A "real" Texan who is "really" from the Crawford area of Texas...this is way too good. :)
