Florence Shapiro Announces U.S. Senate Exploratory Committee

by: David Mauro

Tue Jul 15, 2008 at 00:50 PM CDT

State Sen. Florence Shapiro (R-Plano) announced she is forming a U.S. Senate exploratory committee this morning.

Shapiro, the chair of the Senate Education Committee, will seek the seat of Kay Bailey Hutchison, who, the press release says, "has already announced she will either leave the U.S. Senate at the end of her current term (which runs through 2012) or sooner."

This is a big step for Shapiro and it seems like she wouldn't have taken it unless she was pretty certain that Hutchison would be running for Governor in 2010.

Shapiro says she will begin traveling the state to meet with voters soon. This very early announcement seems to acknowledge the fact that a relatively unknown state senator like Shapiro will have a tough time in this race, especially if it shapes up to be a short-time window special election in which a well-financed candidate like David Dewhurst (or John Sharp?) could have a significant advantage.

Shapiro's list of supporters, however, is fairly impressive. It includes 15 of the 19 13 of the 18 Republican senators.

You can read more about the story and view Shapiro's press release at Quorum Report.

What about on the Democratic side? Who do you want to run for this seat?

it's 14 of the 19 Republican senators (0.00 / 0)
That list of supporters is more interesting that the announcement.  Scanning the list, it's actually 14 of the 19 R senators, since Bill Ratliff is no longer a senator.  And if you take out Janek, who is officially resigned, it knocks it down to 13 of the 18 R Senators.

The 6 wayward R's:
Kip Averitt
Toxic Mike Jackson
Steve Ogden
Dan Patrick
Jeff Wentworth
Tommy Williams

I'm guessing a couple of those like Ogden may be loyal to Dewhurst.  Patrick is loyal to himself.  Either way, it shows the astounding lack of support Dewhurst has for a statewide run from the members of his own party that know him and work with him.

13 of the 19, or 12 of the 18.  Somehow Harvey's count is off.

Thanks, I'll correct it (0.00 / 0)
I agree that Patrick is loyal to himself (and I expect him to run statewide in '10).

Thanks for catching that.

Either that, (0.00 / 0)
...or Dewhurst has indicated that he's staying put.

Perry and KBR in the Guv's race, Shapiro and possibly Abbott in the Senate race, Dewey gets squeezed out.

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
This looks like an early move to head-off Dewhurst.

[ Parent ]
Or... (0.00 / 0)
Perry bails out, leaving Dewey vs. KBR (and maybe Patrick to play the spoiler).

On the Democratic side (0.00 / 0)

I would have originally answered Chris Bell.  It appears he has taken another direction.

Maybe it's time for one of our existing Members of Congress to step up.

We can out-number Florence Shapiro.

[ Parent ]
why don't we just wait until she actually makes a move... (2.00 / 1)
instead of repeatedly going for every KBH head fake?  Nothing's going to happen until 2009 and Florence Shapiro stands little chance of getting elected statewide.

[ Parent ]
I seriously doubt (3.00 / 1)
that Chet Edwards--the Congressman who, for GWB's entire term, has represented the district that includes the Bush ranch--will get the Obama VP nod, so...I'd love to see him in the Senate.  The 'publicans have tried and failed to knock him off for many years.
