Cornyn Staffer's Online Identity Unmasked

by: Matt Glazer

Mon Jun 30, 2008 at 11:40 AM CDT

(In addition to being profiled on KVUE news tonight in Austin, this story is starting to get national attention. After Cornyn's ridiculous "Big Jooooohhnnn" ad -- which was even spoofed on the Daily Show -- how many more times can we expect Cornyn's staff to run a joke of a campaign between now and election day? Texans deserve better - elect Rick Noriega! - promoted by Phillip Martin)

Longtime readers know that in order to register to comment on the site, you must set up an account and provide an email address.  It's a way to ensure accountability and prevent abuse in our community.  However, we sometimes still have problems with abusive users that create sock puppet accounts to harass and intimidate writers and other commenters.

Many of you have become familiar with user Buck Smith's abusive comments that troll the site, attack and personally insult users and writers, and impugn the integrity of our community, our Democratic candidates and our Democratic values.

We have a policy that our commenters have helped enforce that requires us to disclose our jobs and who pays us.  Our commenters have done the same.  When political consultants or staffers post on this site, we know who they are and where they are coming from, ensuring that no false representation is being had.

When a staffer for Lt. Col. Noriega made a dumb mistake and falsely represented himself as a blogger to the Cornyn campaign, he was rightfully excoriated.  When a Democratic consultant created an anonymous website, he was rightfully questioned.  In 2007, user Buck Smith began posting on this and other sites, mainly on threads involving Lt. Col. Rick Noriega or Sen. John Cornyn.  He attacked diarists and commenters and provided pro-Cornyn spin on many items.  In the interest of full disclosure, and in order to keep everything fair, and since Buck Smith has not disclosed who he is, we thought we would clue you in that he is David Beckwith, John Cornyn's senior staffer.

We found out his identity because Mr. Beckwith's email on file with the site is the same email listed on the webpage for his high school reunion class.  (We also have a screenshot in case the site is removed soon.)

You know who we are and who we work for.  You know who the Democratic consultants and staffers that comment on the site are, and who they work for.  Now you know who is the Republican operative, and who he works for.  Keep that in mind every time he leaves comments attacking you for supporting Lt. Col. Rick Noriega.  Keep that in mind every time he takes to the site to spin for Senator John Cornyn.  Keep that in mind when you realize that all of the staffers for Lt. Col. Rick Noriega have disclosed their day jobs, while Senator Cornyn's staffer lurk in the shadows, using age old dirty whisper campaigns in an online forum.

In fact, Cornyn's own staffers commented directly on this issue:

"If you're going to misrepresent yourself, be aware of caller i.d." Walsh said. "I don't think misrepresenting yourself is in line with Texas values. I just find it somewhat ham-handed."

Interestingly, it was Buck Smith who kicked the story off online on an unrelated BOR post.  Beckwith, linked to no outside material but did get the ball rolling using his deceptive user name with this comment.

Today, the Cornyn campaign called and I offered a chance for them to comment directly on the fact that David Beckwith has been concealing his identity on blogs.  The Cornyn campaign spokesman Kevin McLaughlin had this to say (no emphasis added):

What?!?! 'Buck Smith' isn't a real person?!?! Are you serious?? People blog under screen names?!?! I am shocked...next thing I know you'll be saying the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus aren't real either. What kind of world are we living in?!?!

To our young readers, we are sorry you had to hear about Santa Claus this way.  We didn't want you to know so soon, but I promised to post their quote in it's entirety and completely unedited.

Beckwith has over 80 comments as Buck Smith starting in March.  He sets benchmarks for Noriega, attacks Democrats, talks about the Watts vs. Noriega match up, but nowhere does he say who he is or who he works for. Oh and this morning when I talked to Kevin, I told Beckwith I had heard from reliable sources that Beckwith would be fired.  He had no response as of 8:10 this morning.

What an idiot!!!!!!

His comments were laughable, but this behavior is too stupid to believe.

Really, what an idiot. This guy claims to be a pro??

Yet another reason why we are closer to beating cornyn than anyone realizes.

Brilliant work Matt, et al.

I couldn't be happier to find this out.

Is he posting under the same name elsewhere? (0.00 / 0)
I see a lot of posts under the name "buck smith" on the counterinsurgency theory-related blog, Abu Muqawama. The comments made by the user under that screenname are just ridiculous, and the user is COMPLETELY out of his/her element in discussing COIN with a bunch of COIN theorists and practitioners.

An example quote (just to show how stupid the user is):

If Muqtada is so powerful, why is the Iraqi army marching throught Sadr city while he is hiding in Iran, copulating with pre-pubescent girls, boys and goats?

No Idea (0.00 / 0)
It would make sense though.

Just so you know . . . (0.00 / 0)
I regularly read abu muqawama and study security studies (focusing on COIN theory), so I can definitely vouch for his being out of his league there.

I noticed that Buck Smith even commented on the post that suggested that David Beckwith had been, or was about to be, fired from the Cornyn campaign.  He challenged Matt to come up with any evidence that Karen Hughes was involved in the campaign, offering a $250 donation to BlogPAC as an incentive.  I guess he ought to know.

If it turns out Hughes is on board, will the $250 come from the campaign as a business expense, or out of his pocket?

We can't except corporate money, but with today being the fundraising deadline, we will gladly accept the support of the BOR community.

Nice ju-jitsu, Matt (0.00 / 0)
By the way, the Houston Chronicle's Texas Politics is reporting that Beckwith has outed himself as Buck Smith.

Guess it was the 2 hours... (5.00 / 2)
we gave Cornyn's campaign to respond.

That's hilarious. (0.00 / 0)
I suppose they wanted to "get out ahead" of the story. Good work.

Nice work uncovering this weasel. And what a snarky response from McLaughlin!

Jay Coxlie. Good times.

I don't know what's more embarrassing... working for a Texan who hunts with a 28 gauge shotgun or being unmasked using a screen name that could easily be used by a gay porn star.

Nice work, Matt.

hmmm, which part of gay porn star is supposed to be embarassing? why do you have to be homophobic here?

[ Parent ]
Snarkiness not even funny! (0.00 / 0)
Now if he'd have been clever enough to pose as "Buck Naked" at least it might be kinda' sorta' funny. Beckwith wasted a lot of time hanging out here and that's time that the contributors to the Cornyn campaign would probably rather have him spend on real work.

as a taxpayer (3.00 / 1)
the chron says he works for the federal office as well.  as a taxpayer I'd prefer that my dollars not be spent on anonymous partisan shilling.

[ Parent ]
Agreed... (4.50 / 4)
Per the Houston Chronicle Texas Politics Blog    "...he said he divides his time between the campaign and Cornyn's federal office)"

According to the most recent Senate Ethics Manual
(S Pub. 108-1),
http://ethics.senate.gov/downl...

"Senate employees are free to engage in campaign activities
on their own time, as volunteers or for pay, (339) provided they do not do so in congressional offices or otherwise use official resources."

CAMPAIGN USE OF OFFICIAL RESOURCES
Official resources may only be used for official purposes. This principle derives in large part
from 31 U.S.C. § 1301(a), providing that official funds are to be used only for the purposes for which appropriated, as well as from statutory authorizations for allowances. (418) It is thus inappropriate to use any official resources to conduct campaign or political activities.

The Senate Code of Conduct states, "Senate space and equipment may not be used for campaign
activities.

I would like to know whether the comments came from an official Senate or government computer or IP address since his comments discussing political opponents and races obviously constitute "campaign purposes" or "political activities".

[ Parent ]
I'd love to know... (3.00 / 1)
If BOR tracks IP addresses on comments.

Damage (3.50 / 4)
Having a partisan troll is a good measure that they fear the truth.

I registered on this blog recently. I have been lurking here for some time. I stumbled across Burnt Orange during the Texas primary. I was so impressed with the coverage and the explanation of how the Texas system worked, I became a regular visitor. Being from Illinois, I was under the impression there were no Democrats in Texas. I am delighted to see not only are there Democrats, they are obviously well organized and informed.

This is exactly (4.43 / 7)
the shitty, condescending, douchebaggery that anyone who poses a serious question to Cornyn's office receives in response.

What?!?! 'Buck Smith' isn't a real person?!?! Are you serious?? People blog under screen names?!?! I am shocked...next thing I know you'll be saying the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus aren't real either. What kind of world are we living in?!?!

I'll be sending a dollar per comment by Beckwith to the Noriega campaign to help rid us of Big Box Turtle John.

Still no update or correction to the original story about Beckwith and Hughes that has now been denied by Beckwith and followed up by others. If the site was wrong, then it should own up. Y'all would be asking for the same thing from anyone else making this kind of mistake.

Denied (0.00 / 0)
by Beckwith and followed up by others? Should his denial be trusted? I don't know about the others.

Texas Enterprise Fund is a "corporate welfare slush fund":

Yes, great summary, Deece
Your summary of the Texas Enterprise Fund as a "corporate welfare slush fund" is well taken.  But something here does not compute.
I am a major, major fan of Sen. Rodney Ellis.  The Texas Enterprise Fund was created in 2003 in a government reorganization bill sponsored by Sen. Ellis.  See, for example,
http://www.lubbockonline.com/s...
But Deece -- weren't you Sen. Ellis's chief of staff during the 2003 legislative session?

This is just awesome! (0.00 / 0)
Sometimes the folks who are so full of themselves are also as dumb as stump. Eventually they slip up and get caught red handed.

What I find even more disturbing is the campaign's idiotic response. Sounds like Cornyn has just surrounded himself with a bunch of "Big Bad" Kool-Aid drinkers!

[ Parent ]
Assumed It (0.00 / 0)
I always assumed that Buck Smith worked for Cornyn.  In fact, I even said so on this Swing State Project thread.  That said, I actually had some doubt when I wrote that, because the comment he wrote so glaringly misquoted the 2002 TLC CD 10 breakdown that I questioned whether a paid staffer would blow this.

He leaves comments using his real name... (0.00 / 0)
...only when he wants to, it seems.

Respond to Cornyn (0.00 / 0)
It's one thing to comment about this in BOR but it's something that needs action.  I mean if his campaign will tolerate this kind of behavior does his Senate office allow the same thing? It's time to call or e-mail the Senator's campaign and shake the office up.

Too funny & great sleuthing (0.00 / 0)
