After the back and forth of Rasmussen polls, finally a poll I trust has some interesting news.
According to the Texas Lyceum, a statewide, non-partisan leadership group, the U.S. Senate race is very tight. The poll shows Junior Senator John Cornyn at 38%, Lt. Col and State Representative Rick Noriega at 36%, and undecided at 24%. The biggest surprise is only 23% of Texans feel the country is on the right track.
The Texas Lyceum is a live interview poll to over 1,000 voters with a margin of error of 4.5%
The breakdowns within the poll are particularly interesting.
The respondents come from a variety of places, 42% suburban, 28% urban, and 27% rural. Most - 59% - are married, and 43% have one or more college degrees. Most - 54% - identify themselves as White; 32% as Hispanic; and 11% as African-American. The party splits are 32% Republican and 44% Democrat - but the ideological splits go the other way, with 42% calling themselves conservative, 34% saying they are moderate, and 19% identifying themselves as liberals.
According to the Noriega press release, the U.S. Senate race is drawing national attention as more and more polling data indicate a close race and another potential win for the Democrats. The Noriega campaign was recently bolstered by news that the Obama campaign plans to send resources and staff to Texas and high profile national figures including General Wesley Clark, Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) and Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) are aiding in campaign fundraising efforts. Noriega has become a popular figure on the internet, soaring to the position of one of the top recipients on the Democratic fundraising site ActBlue.com.
This is an incredible poll and definitely good news going into the June 30 fundraising deadline.
