Texas: The Next Battleground State?

( - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

Last week, Texas was graced with a three-city swing by David Axelrod, chief strategist for Barack Obama's campaign. Residents in Dallas, Austin and Houston opened their homes to a fundraiser for Obama, at which Axelrod spoke at length and answered questions.

It was the last question asked in Austin that should perk up the ears of Texas Democrats -- a guest asked if the Obama for America campaign would pay attention to Texas, or just "use it as an ATM." A fair question to ask, given the history of Democratic campaigns taking Texans' money but not working as hard for their votes.

While Axelrod did not give an unequivocal answer, he did seem impressed by the impassioned support in all three cities. Local volunteers Ian Davis and Ken Flippin presented Axelrod with a "Texans for Obama" bumpersticker and a "Turn Texas Blue" t-shirt. The strategist received the gifts warmly, and the following night in Houston pledged fifteen paid Obama staff members to Texas.

Coming on the heels of the campaign announcement that Obama will send staff to all fifty states, it looks like neither Democrats nor Republicans can assume Texas' "red" status will remain unchallenged.

Sweet! (5.00 / 2)
I like the way "Texas" and "battleground" sound together in a sentence.

15 paid staff?! (5.00 / 2)
That's 15 more than the last three election cycles put together.

See my post (3.00 / 1)

I think it is terrible that Obama cannot be bothered to come and campaign in Texas.  Axelrod said they would do just a GOTV/registration.  I have a nephew at the Burnt Orange school who worked his heart out for him, and now Obama cannot be bothered with Texas?  Clinton or Edwards would have returned at least once.

Obama needs to come help downtickets.  Even if Obama cannot win Texas, he could still help Rick Noriega and moreover, he should come to Netroots Nation.  It is the Netroots that got Obama where he is today.

How many times did Kerry '04, Gore '00, and Clinton '96 campaign in Texas? (2.00 / 1)
I'm pretty sure the answer is zero. Clinton came once in summer '92 as part of his famous bus tour, but that's it.

You're absolutely right that presidential campaigns should work here, for the sake of downballot races and party building and maybe, just maybe, to carry the state. But Obama is already doing that, more than the last three presidential candidates combined. Give him a little credit.

Nope (0.00 / 0)
Clinton campaigned here in '96 and it paid off: He lost the state by less than 5 points.

If he had as many resources as campaigns do these days, I bet he could have won.

Ditto (2.50 / 2)
Who ever said Obama wasn't coming back to Texas?

As Lorenzo said, give him a little freakin credit!  He's already pledged to have at least 15 staff here. How can you say that will not help our downballot candidates? The Obama team has expressed interest in folding into the operations we already have up and running. That means we could have the Obama folks sharing offices with our local coordinated campaigns. I don't know how much more we could ask for!

Also, Obama LOVES Texas. He OFTEN cites walking on stage at the Austin Auditorium Shores rally as the moment he knew he could win this thing.

I'm willing to bet that he'll be back.

We are also (0.00 / 0)
getting 50 Obama Organizing Fellows by the end of the summer. Keep your shorts on. :-)

Also, you probably aren't privy to the planning conversations for Netroots Nation, so don't go making wild claims you know nothing about!

I don't believe (0.00 / 0)
that Benny claimed that he knew what was going on regarding Netroots Nation planning conversations.

That being said, there should be a good Obama presence here in Texas for the fall campaign.  And I respectively think Benny is premature in his pessimism.

After all, we are only 1.5 weeks removed from the convention

Read Benny's post (0.00 / 0)
Texas needs to stop being the ATM for the national party. This needs to be about the Senate campaign money, not Obama's campaign stops in Texas. Obama is doing better than Clinton and Gore ever did by Texas.

It's good to hear (0.00 / 0)
that Obama is taking Texas seriously enough to invest resources here.  Like Benny said, he needs to come and campaign here, even if it's only to help out Noriega and other down-ballot Democrats.  Being the eternal optimist that I am, I personally think he will.  My main concern is getting Rick Noriega enough money to run a competitive campaign down here.  His fundraising has started to pick up, but he's still operating at a huge disadvantage.
