BREAKING NEWS: Tim Russert Dead at 58

by: Matt Glazer

Fri Jun 13, 2008 at 03:33 PM CDT

Tim Russert, the moderator of NBC's "Meet the Press," passed away today of an apparent heart attack. The network's Washington bureau chief was 58 years old.

Russert was one of the few journalist who was able to parley a career in politics and news. Russert graduated from law school and worked on New York Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan's Senatorial campaign in 1976. He later worked on New York Democrat Mario Cuomo's gubernatorial campaign in 1982. Russert was hired by NBC at their Washington Bureau in 1984.

His pointed questions and laser focus are a large reason why Meet the Press is the most watched Sunday morning news program in the nation. His influence in American politics earned him the title of one of Time's 100 most influential people in the world.

Russert came from a working class family in Buffalo New York, but effected the lives of every American by breaking countless news stories and asking national political figures the tough questions.

He was a personal inspiration and a large reason why as a political person, I began writing. His loss will be apparent during 2008, and Burnt Orange Report send our thoughts and prayers to the entire Russert family.

The world will never be the same (0.00 / 0)
...without one of my personal heroes, Tim Russert, alive in it.

I know how you feel, Matt... it's the same as I do.

Tim... (0.00 / 0)
...has been a Sunday morning companion for ages now.  During my months out at sea he's one thing that I missed the most and looked forward to seeing when I got home!  He will be sorely missed.

They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. -Benjamin Franklin

If It's Sunday ... (0.00 / 0)
Tim will be missed so much, especially during this coming political season.  Every morning I watch two programs, This Week which is DVRed and Meet the Press which I watch directly.  Hearts and prayers go out to the Russert family.

The phrase "If It's Sunday..." will never be the same again.

Tim Russert (0.00 / 0)
I always watched "Meet the Press" since the Spivak days.  I admired how Russert got the newsmakers of the day on his program.  But Russert could do a "hatchet job" and devastated Howard Dean 4 years ago in a manner that I can't forgive.  (He tried it on John Edwards, but John, with his trial lawyer experience, was too fast for him.)  On balance, however, we remember Tim Russert as a master of the Journalistic art.

An Icon is lost (0.00 / 0)
This is really sad news. After Tim's passing, our leaders are a little less accountable and we're the worse for it. I never saw Tim as being partisan - just real. I will never forget election night 2000. I sat up all night with my week old son watching the "returns" come in. Tim's professionalism and incredible knowledge of history kept it all together that night.

A Tremendous Loss (0.00 / 0)
My prayers are with Tim Russert's family tonight.  This is a tremendous loss.  We will miss you Tim.

A sad day (0.00 / 0)
For those of us who watched him on Sunday morning - it is like losing someone close to us.  He was part of our life for that hour on Sunday where he covered the political scene in America better than anyone else.  He was taken away from us way too soon.  He will be missed.

Tim Russert (0.00 / 0)
I too send my deepest condolences to Tim's family. Tim's death was tragically sudden. However, I do not agree with placing him in the pantheon of journalistic gods. He often avoided confronting members of the Bush administration even when as a Washington insider he knew they were lying. In fact I would say he basically soft balled guests from the administration. On the other hand he crushed Howard Dean, along with all of the rest of mainstream media for saying yippee! I would consider the mainstream media completely irrelevant to the political process if it wasn't for the harm they do every day.

Luke remembering Tim (0.00 / 0)
If you haven't seen it Luke Russert appeared on the Today Show today in a 15 minutes interview with Matt Lauer.  They both remembered Tim and related a lot of stories about Tim.  You can see Tim in Luke in a well composed and thoughtful interview.  I now see why Tim was always so proud of Luke.

The image of Luke walking up to the chair on the set of Meet the Press is very personal and shows the love he had for his dad.

Here's the interview.
