Turn Texas Blue logoIt's time for Texas Democrats to come together to defeat John McCain and take back the White House for the Democrats!

To help encourage party unity, Obama and Clinton suporters are teaming up to host a "Unity Pub Crawl" tonight to welcome statewide convention delegates to Austin. Both the Obama and Clinton campaigns are hosting parties at nearby bars on Red River Street, and the goal is to encourage Texas Democrats to intermingle and kick-start the unity process.

UNITY STATEMENTS FROM OBAMA & CLINTON LEADERS

Rep. Mark Strama - Obama:

"We can't afford another four years of the politics of division that have characterized the last eight years. We need to come together as a country to make a change. Our party is much stronger after having a high-energy primary that hit all 50 states and beyond."

Rep. Eddie Rodriguez - Clinton:
"I supported Hillary Clinton's presidential bid, but I am a Democrat first. I proudly support Senator Obama for President of the United States now that he is the presumptive nominee. People all over the country have shown their passion during this primary, and it's that passion will allow Democrats to take back the White House."

Amy Everhart - Obama:
“I’ve been an Obama supporter since before he started running for president and have been with him every step of the way. But I have many friends who are Clinton supporters as well. I am looking forward to welcoming supporters of both candidates to Austin this weekend to unite and have a great time at the convention and to win in November.”

David Holmes - Clinton Superdelegate:
"I have never seen excitement like this in a Democratic primary before. It is incredible that voters in all fifty states and beyond have had a say in this. There is no question that this has been healthy for our party and I know we will all join forces under one big tent to get Barack Obama elected to the presidency.”

Are the proceeds going to the party/candidates? (0.00 / 0)
Otherwise, $5 for a beer/shot doesn't seem like much of a special.

We got the venues for free (0.00 / 0)
As someone who's quite familiar with the Austin scene, I'm sure you're well aware that there's rental fees associated with renting out venues for private parties.  Had those bars charged us the normal rate, there would have been at least a $10-20 cover charge...which would have killed the unity party idea because no one would have paid that.

So I'd like to thank all the locally-owned bars on Red River Street who came together at the last minute to support our unity effort.  Many of the bars on 6th street are not locally owned and refused to waive their cover charges.  The unity party literally came together in 24 hours, and it's very impressive that the coaltion of Red River bars were able to accomadate us on such short notice. Thus, for future conventions and events in Austin, I fully encourage event organizers to support the locally owned businesses on Red River street.

And btw, had you attended the event last night, you would have discovered that the beers at Club de Ville were only $2.50.  That's a steal for a downtown bar!
