BOR Endorsement (Place 4 Runoff): Laura Morrison

by: Burnt Orange Report

Mon Jun 02, 2008 at 08:00 AM CDT

Over two dozen community groups in Austin have endorsed Laura Morrison for Austin City Council Place 4.  Today we add our name to that list.

Early Vote starts today and we are encouraging our Austin readers to join the Austin Chronicle, Austin American Statesman, Democratic Clubs, Austin environmental groups, Better Austin Today, and the Austin Neighborhoods Council in supporting Laura Morrison.

Morrison has shown she can lead; with her years as the President of the Austin neighborhoods Council she earned the respect from friends and foes alike.  She leads by earning people's respect and getting them involved in the discussion.  She has the professional background in mathematics and more recently Public Health Disaster management to bring to a new voice to the city.

She has quietly built a network of support with her advocacy for open government and government accountability, while working to protect the voice of Austin Neighborhoods and Democrats.

She has put together a broad coalition, winning 27 endorsements across the community, virtually every democratic club, almost every African American and Hispanic group endorsing, and environmental and neighborhood groups.

She has proven she can organize by building the team to put progressive ideals successfully before the voters. While her opponent is focused primarily on development outside of town, Laura's top concern is protecting the quality of life of the people living here today.

She has quietly played a leading role in dozens of important community efforts including Save Town Lake, Helping to East Austin neighborhoods to organize to protect their neighborhoods, and many more.

Morrison is a proven leader and strong advocate for Austin.  As the Early Vote begins, we encourage you to vote for Laura Morrison for Austin City Council Place 4.

Morrison: the real Republican (0.00 / 0)
What would you call a candidate who gets the maximum possible donations from Jim Skaggs, a wealthy guy out Westlake-ways who wants to gut Capital Metro and use the money for suburban freeways?

What would you call a candidate who wants to make sure there's no affordable housing in central Austin by writing rules which prevent the construction or maintenance of secondary dwelling units?

What would you call a candidate who opposes multi-family housing in Central Austin every chance she gets (where her hands weren't pre-tied by a neighborhood plan, ahem)?

What would you call a candidate whose policies would inevitably result in more suburban sprawl, especially over the aquifer?

I'd call that person a Republican. Wouldn't you?

I asked Laura about Skaggs last Friday... (0.00 / 0)
She said he is supporting her because he believes all three of the place 4 candidates are pro-rail, but "since she's an engineer at least she'll make a decision based on data."  In our talk, she seemed to be pretty pro-rail, and of course her campaign manager ran the 2000 light-rail campaign on the pro-rail side.  I agree with your other criticisms for the most part, though I think she'll moderate once in office (ask any activists -- candidates always drift towards the prevailing consensus when they get on the dais).

I was all set to vote for Cid until he came out hard against the point-of-sale energy efficiency improvements last week.  Now I'm back on the fence and probably won't make my decision until after next Monday's SBCA meeting which both candidates are supposed to attend.

Point-of-sale mandate (0.00 / 0)
I had a similar reaction to the POS mandate. (I think he's pandering to the RECA base in order to try to make up for the turnout machine of the ANC; but I still don't like it).

However, I don't see any evidence of moderation in Morrison's stance - and I don't see her as pro-rail in any meaningful way; she hits all the code-words the old ANC people like to hear, and if she had her way, we wouldn't have sufficient density to support quality rail transit anyways.

As for her supposed moderation on density issues, BTW, I've noticed her claiming credit for some stuff in and around OWANA - the problem is that the neighborhood plan, passed before she got any power in the NA, called explicitly for that stuff - so she really didn't have any choice but to support those projects, or at least not oppose them. (In other words, on that stuff, the guys who wrote the zoning part of the plan, mainly Dave Sullivan - one of Galindo's colleagues on the Planning Commission, had already effectively tied her hands on that stuff).

When she had a chance to show her true colors, she burned up OWANA's hard-earned political capital by opposing Spring and 7Rio (and forcing Whole Foods into a stupid suburban front design) - all against the wishes of the actual neighborhood association which was most relevant (DANA)! She actually tried to claim that downtown was her 'buffer zone'.

I'd call this person a Republican. (3.00 / 1)

A guy who voted for George Bush, Rick Perry and Phil Gramm.

A guy who gave Phil Gramm thousands of dollars.

That person is Cid Galindo.

So would I (0.00 / 0)
Any evidence of any of that kind of behavior recently? Or are you like the other purists here who insist that a Republican can never change his spots?

And I'd still rather have a Bush-supporting Gramm-donating Republican whose policies actually supported affordable housing and transit than a limousine 'liberal' like Morrison whose policies were all about satisfying the troglodytic people like Jim Skaggs while keeping the rest of us living in Pflugerville and Round Rock.
