Jennifer Kim's Negative Mail

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Fri May 02, 2008 at 10:23 PM CDT

The following mail paid for by the Jennifer Kim campaign hit in the last day or two.

At issue is Randi Shade's campaign mangager/advisor Mark Nathan. Now, many BOR readers may know him from successfully managing a number of the current council's campaigns, and it is that point which the mail piece refers to. Fair enough.

But being a political blog, we wouldn't be doing our job if we didn't point the irony (or hypocrisy, take your pick) in this story- the key point being that the very same "developer lobbyist" that Jennifer Kim attacks in this mailer... was originally sought out by Jennifer Kim to run her campaign.

Listen to the audio of this phone message.

And the following were provided by Nathan himself as background for this. There are more but I think this illustrates the point. According to Nathan, Kim asked him to work on her 2005 campaign as well (he declined) and back in 2002, Nathan quote "personally hired her to work directly for me on the 2002 Tony Sanchez campaign, which she did for five months".

Hi there, Mark.  Yes, thanks for calling.  I'm in DC right now and would be
able to meet Friday if you are available.

Jennifer

Thanks for the call about your campaign.  I left a voicemail on your cell
last week, thought I would email to see if we can find a time to talk.  I
hope this finds you well!

Sad really

am i crazy... (2.00 / 2)
or is that mailpiece that kim's campaign paid to send out addressed to "the shade household"??

It's addressed to the shade household (0.00 / 0)
You would be correct.

This explains it (0.00 / 0)
Last time I ran into Mark at a reception, he had strings on his fingers. In fact we got tangled up a little when we shook hands. Quite embarrassing really. The resulting confusion allowed Naishtat to get ahead of us in the food line, so of course Mark and I both left hungry. I'm glad there's an explanation for it.

When will it end? Getting Terry Keel fired up during the Democratic Runoff had much better entertainment value.

On Naishtat and food lines, one time my wife and I saw him at a downtown restaurant, we waited around an extra fifteen minutes for him to finish. We had never seen him pay for meal before.

So wait... (0.00 / 0)
Nathan and Kim were cordial. Nathan and Kim talked about policy and her campaign. Kim went with another manager, Nathan went with Shade?

Yeah, it kinda sounds like sour grapes... I'm just not sure whose.

Show some guts (0.00 / 0)
GMAFB. Kim sent out a mailer saying Shade was awful for hiring the same exact campaign manager that she herself tried to hire.

You need to man up and admit that the candidate you've endorsed has some serious ethical problems.

Well, that's one read... (0.00 / 0)
the other is that she went with someone else. Possibly because she was afraid of a similar attack being leveled at ther.

Frankly, I could care less about this he said/she said/they said crap.

I certainly appreciate your advice and will happily give it the thought it deserves.

The fact that she considered him makes this hypocritical (0.00 / 0)
"Possibly because she was afraid of a similar attack being leveled at ther."

So not picking him was a strategical move.  But the fact that she didn't but considered it, shows that she doesn't have any real problem with who he is, and is just pretending too in regard to her opponent.

Possibly... (0.00 / 0)
Or possibly, she didn't like the way he looked one day.

not sure whose? (0.00 / 0)
give me a break.  1) Kim criticizes Shade for supporters who Kim sought but they turned her down (this Thurs, AAS, "Kim Criticizes Shade over donors"), 2) Kim condemns Shade for hiring Mark Nathan who Kim sought too (listen to the tape on Burnt Orange) 3) Kim sends out letter to supporters claiming Randi said Austin should have compromised with developers instead of passing SOS (this a lie too, p.20 AusChron).  She's in melt down. Give it up

[ Parent ]
Again... (0.00 / 0)
I listened to the tape. I read the email. I didn't see or hear her seeking Mark for anything other than advice. Maybe I missed something... lemme go look again...

No. I thought I might have missed the offer of employment, but apparently I didn't.

The really funny thing is that I like all of these people.

Do I think the attack was specious? Of course. Most attack ads ARE. Do I care? Absolutely not. I didn't really care about Randi's attack on Jennifer's office budget which of course the Statesman dutifully wrote up to yawns.

Jennifer is just copying (0.00 / 0)
Hillary's campaign strategy.  LOL

Doing My Part For The Left,Left Of The Rainbow

she should know (2.00 / 1)
what Nathan's like, right?

And of course she wants money--they all need cash for their campaigns right?

So why is Shade now getting the developer dough and Kim not?

Seems like that's the question, not whether or not Kim needs money and asked for it--the interesting and important question it's why she's fallen out of favor w/ her former supporters in the developer camp.  And what getting the developer money might mean to Shade's decisions, since she's a likely winner.

What a half-assed dodge (0.00 / 0)
If it was bad for Shade to get him, it was bad for Kim to try to get him.

What this shows is that Kim will say and do anything to get elected.

As for why she fell out of favor with her former developers; it's because she's an erratic, ineffective, rudderless, borderline corrupt loose cannon. If the BATPAC had half a brain, they'd see that too.

That's One's Mild (0.00 / 0)
The mail I got on Saturday was even worse.  In a flier with a picture of a big muddy outfall, Kim continued her spin and attack that Shade would "compromise" on Barton Springs.

Shade's actual comment was that it would have been better if we could have worked out some kind of deal than getting stuck, both Austin and all of Texas, with the grandfathering bill that has allowed anyone with any pretext of a preexisting development plan to claim an exemption to standards and laws developed after their "plan."

The Muddy Pipe piece was so negative that it would have prompted me to vote for Shade if I hadn't already voted.
