Senator Kirk Watson's Statement on the Debate

by: Phillip Martin

Wed Feb 20, 2008 at 01:24 PM CST

Talk about a class act. From his blog, a post titled "MSNBC & Me."

So . . . That really happened.

On Tuesday night, after an important and historic victory in the Wisconsin Presidential Primary by Senator Barack Obama, I appeared on the MSNBC post-election program. “Hardball” host Chris Matthews (who is, it turns out, as ferocious as they say), began grilling me on Senator Obama’s legislative record.

And my mind went blank. I expected to be asked about the primary that night, or the big one coming up in Texas on March 4, or just about anything else in the news. When the subject changed so emphatically, I reached for information that millions of my fellow Obama supporters could recite by heart, and I couldn’t summon it.

My most unfortunate gaffe is not, in any way, a comment on Senator Obama, his substantial record, or the great opportunity we all share to elect him President of the United States.

Had I not lost my mind, here are the accomplishments I would have mentioned:

  • Senator Obama’s fight for universal children’s health care in Illinois.
  • His success bringing Republicans and Democrats together (a huge selling point for me in general) on bills such as the one in Illinois requiring police interrogations and confessions to be videotaped.
  • His leadership on ethics reform in Washington (the bill that lobbyists and special interests are complaining about right now has his name on it).
  • His bill to make the federal budget far more transparent and accessible to Americans via the Internet – we could use that openness in Texas.
  • And his vital work with Republicans to lock down nuclear weapons around the world.

Of course, it would have helped to remember all of this last night. I encourage anyone who wants to know more (especially Mr. Matthews) to log onto texas.barackobama.com.

In the meantime, let’s not lose focus on what’s important in this election. It’s not my stunning televised defeat in “Stump the Chump.” Thankfully, it has nothing at all to do with me.

What’s important is the direction our country is headed. What’s important are the priorities, methods, and, yes, accomplishments of those seeking the highest office in the country.

Senator Obama has a vision for this nation, and we would be fortunate to fulfill it. He has the commitment to work with everyone from across the political and demographic spectrum to achieve it. And he has the strength to defend us, our security, and our values against all who will challenge them.

But most of all, he has the record to prove that all of this is possible. It’s something no one should forget.

. . . Even though I did.

. . . On national television.

In case you haven't seen it (and how could you miss it), you can watch it here. All I can say is that Senator Watson has handled himself with far more grace, humility, and good humor than I did most of this morning. Kudos, Senator.

Too late. It is on the youtubes (1.00 / 6)
What a total dufus.

If I was Obama, I would drive the bus over him. What an incredibly stupid thing to do.

At LEAST know the damn candidate!

Or you could... (3.00 / 2)
give the guy a break. He's one of the best state legislators we've got, not some "dufus."

He owned up to it, and will make it as right as possible. I've been watching MSNBC off and on today and haven't really seen much of it. We live in a 24 hour news cycle and it is now old news.

Their are new stories that have already covered up the the flub. Let's use it as a learning moment and move on.

On you (3.00 / 1)
Can you name OFF THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD any of senator Clinton's legislative achievements?

Like DUH!!!! I am not on the youtubes! (1.00 / 3)
If you are going to be on with Chris Mathews, do your frickin homework.

"Kirk is one of the finest and most intelligent leaders in this country..." and he was as dufus yesterday.

Kirk Watson was a great mayor and now an even better Senator (3.00 / 1)
he got hit with an O'Reilly factor style blitz and he made a simple gaffe. lay off him, your acerbic tone is unproductive. Don't be an apologist for shock-jock "journalism" of Matthew's ilk. if you wanna engage your misplaced ire, take on the media instead of its victims.
by the way (/the) it's youtube, not "the youtubes" - the only place where you can find gaffes along side grainy footage of skateboarders crashing and 8 million videos of obscure anime.
I think Sen. Watson's recovery on this today was great too - he didn't take ownership of tweety's crap "gotcha" job.

Matthews is a tool, but Kirk is cool. (0.00 / 0)
Matthews is pathetic.  He's kissing up to the Clinton campaign now, after making unfair comments about her that have caused him grief with his employer, MSNBC.

Remember when Matthews was exposed for being a Machiavellan tool when he showed up on the Daily Show to huck a book?

http://rawstory.com/news/2007/...

Jon Stewart nailed him:

"But there has to be some core of soul in there," Stewart retorted. "What campaigns are, are photo opportunities that are staged, and there's nothing in this book about, 'Be good; be competent.'"

Matthews said that information was in the Bible -- "it's been written," he said.

"This book has been written too, it's called The Prince," Stewart retorted, referring to Machiavelli's treatise. "I thought that (your book) was a recipe for sadness. ... If you live this book, your life will be strategy, and ... you'll be unhappy."

As the interview became more heated, Matthews invited Stewart to a tete-a-tete on his home turf, Hardball, which Stewart declined. "I don't troll," he said.

Kirk is no dufus (3.00 / 3)
Idiotic comment.  Kirk is one of the finest and most intelligent leaders in this country.  As a Hillary supporter, I will tell you that Obama is lucky to have him as a suppporter.  And he handled himself with class after the interview.

Don't waste the time responding to attacks (3.00 / 1)

Let's do what OUR candidate needs right now and that is to stay focused and work hard to get him a TEXAS victory.

I can't imagine how difficult it is for Senator Watson today but he is taking it like a true leader; owning it, and asking us to also move on and not loose fucus.

This election and movement is not going to be about one person's interview...so let's not pander to the attacks.

Fire Up - (been) Ready to GO!!!

Great response, Kirk! (3.00 / 2)
I don't envy you the hot seat.  Way to handle the aftermath.

Full Disclosure: Former Political Director for Lee Leffingwell for Mayor of Austin

Kirk Watson is a class act (3.00 / 2)
... and his essay proves it.

More important, his essay reminds me of why I support Barack Obama: to stake a claim against the vicious, hyperpartisan, "gotcha" mindset that characterizes so much of our political discourse -- and the MSM's coverage of it -- these days.

I'd sure hate to have been put on the same spot as he was, on national TV and all.  Let he or she among us who could do better, cast the first stone.

DeeceX: making Texas safe for democracy

A little humanity (2.00 / 1)
Kirk Watson messed up badly, and he admitted it. That doesn't mean he's a hero. It doesn't mean he's a goat. It just means that he's human, and that he knows it.

Watching It Live (3.00 / 1)
While watching it live, I was pleading with the TV for him to bring of the ethics/lobbyist bill (The third one in Watson's list).   That was the first bill that came to my head when Matthew's asked the question, and it's one of the sharpest contrasts Obama has with Clinton.
