Clinton and Obama to Attend TDP Watch Party

by: Phillip Martin

Wed Feb 20, 2008 at 10:45 AM CST

Buy tickets while you can. You may have a 5-minute window:
Today, Texas Democratic Party Chair Boyd Richie announced Senator Clinton and Senator Obama would be in attendance at the TDP Watch Party at the Hyatt Regency. With already over 1000 RSVP's to the watch party, the TDP anticipates the event will reach the maximum capacity. With over 43,000 people already having expressed interest in attending the debate and watch party, it is clear that the Texas Democratic Party is the hottest ticket in the Lone Star State.

"The appearance by Senator Obama and Senator Clinton at the TDP Debate Watch Party isn't only a chance for the public to meet two extraordinary Democratic leaders-it is an opportunity to watch history in the making. The enthusiasm and excitement that Senator Clinton and Senator Obama bring to Texas helps continue to build the momentum of the Texas Democratic Party," said Texas Democratic Party Chairman Boyd Richie.

I already bought my tickets -- $35 for sustaining TDP members.

It goes from 6-10.

so great (0.00 / 0)
for our party.

i hope the tdp raises a ton of money (and stows some away for a rainy day).

are they sponsoring satellite watch events around the state or just this one?

seems like there is substantial opportunity to do one in every metro area that might raise a comparable amount.

Not sure (0.00 / 0)
I think it'd be a great thing for the county parties to do, though -- Harris County, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, etc. Just not Waller County.

Obama would be well served (0.00 / 0)
by visiting the texansforobama watch party at Scholz Garten.  If he ends up doing well it will because of those people who have worked tirelessly for the last year.  Many of them could not afford the $50 hobnob fee to get into Bubba Boyd's party.  I for one would rather give it directly to his campaign rather than the TDP.

Umm... (0.00 / 0)
OK. Bubba Boyd? Really?

Texans for Obama watch party (0.00 / 0)
i agree. he should swing by the Texans for Obama watch party to be with his die-hard supporters. oh yeah, and $50 is ridiculous. i'll either be at Scholz's or Opal Divine's (that's where the CCYD party is).

The TDP still needs to make money (3.00 / 1)
I'm amazed at how often folks criticized the TDP for not raising funds, and now that they are, they're being criticized.

As everyone has shown, there are plenty of other places to watch the debate for free. The fact that the TDP easily sold out a 2,000 person venue to watch this -- at $35-$50 a ticket -- means a lot of money that will be staying here to grow our party long after the Obama and Clinton motorcades leave our state on March 5.

I agree (0.00 / 0)
I think this is a good fund raising opportunity.

There is nothing wrong with fundraising (1.00 / 1)
However in a year when we have the opportunity to bring a wave of new people into the party (or inspire them to become active) the exact wrong thing is to have a fat cat party at the Hyatt Regency.  The few thousand dollars raised would pale in comparison to a lifetime of activism we could foster with an event that everyone can attend.  The campaign of Obama has proved you don't need rich guys in suits, you need regular folks willing to roll up their sleeves.

Rich guys in suits? (0.00 / 0)
Dude, we're talking $50, you act like people are being asked to turn over their firstborn sons at this event. News Flash: that low dollar fundraising Senator Obama is so good at? I bet he asks for that same $50 amount alot. Seems to be working out ok for him so far.

And you say this isn't a time for the party to raise money? When is a good time for you, when we're in the crapper? The best time to raise money is when enthusiasm is high, not low.

And you seem to assume that because there's a paid event there will be no opportunities for free events. Gosh, I wonder what that was about, with Obama announcing a rally here on Friday? You better call his office and let him know that's inconvenient for you, since it proves you dead wrong. I bet Clinton will be back too, seems like they're both living in Texas for the rest of the month. You won't be able to throw a dead cat around here between now and March 4th without it landing in the middle of a big exciting free political event.

Suggestion: if you don't think you can afford it, don't go. If you don't think it's worth it, don't go. In fact, don't go anyway, because you might kill the buzz with that 'tude.

Meanwhile, these folks at TDP work their butts off, not only to keep the lights on but to move forward with alot of crucially important, sometimes boring, and almost always expensive structural tools to help Democrats win elections. The wave of new people you mentioned is coming...it's already here, whether the Party holds this fundraiser or not. Stop acting like they're killing it, when it's clear to a lot of people that they're working hard to fund the programs that can institutionalize it, focus it, and win with it.

Stuff costs money. I bet a lot of Democrats in Texas are sick and tired of losing. Winning costs more.
