NEW KEYE VIDEO Rep. Dawnna Dukes: "Low Down, Dirty and Underhanded"

by: salsal

Tue Feb 19, 2008 at 01:12 PM CST

( - promoted by Matt Glazer)

The above is a MUST watch video on Rep Dawnna Dukes, by KEYE News, tells the story on how Dukes doesn't pay her bills. Dukes has actually been sued for nonpayment by:

   * City of Austin
   * Travis County
   * Austin Independent School District
   * Travis Hospital District
   * San Antonio Federal Credit Union
   * Austin Community College
   * Sub Contractors

The Texas Comptroller had even placed a lien against her business "DM Dukes and Associates" for not paying her business taxes. Dukes business is still defunct, but Dukes continues to do business and get paid with taxpayer dollars!

You must see the video above. Now, for what I've found (what the report above doesn't cover).

1) Rep. Dukes, who voted to toll Austin freeways, is a certified contractor with TxDOT. I've put in a FOIA request to ask how much she's been paid by TxDOT and if she's been paid by the local Toll Authority (I'll report back to you on my blog- http://salcostello.blogspot.com/ - when I get answers in about 10 days).

2) Also, Capitol Annex reports that Rep. Dukes is putting up legislation for developers, then getting contracts in return.

this is a pretty good data point for the argument that not paying our politicians a livable wage leads to elected officials that are incompetent and/or corrupt.  In this world, you get what you pay for.

Not very good news for Dawnna (0.00 / 0)
Keep us up to date on that FOIA request Sal.  We would really like to know how much she has been paid by TxDOT.

Well, I puked in my mouth a little bit after watching this video.  Dawnna Dukes shows again her corruption and inability to manage her finances (and yes, she is on the house appropriations committee!--a committee that determines how Texan's tax dollars are spent, despite her own inability to pay them!).

Using campaign contributions to pay off ethics complaints and interest on her credit card statements!  To date, no correction of her campaign expense reports (that I am aware of) which conceal all of her expenditures by listing payments to credit cards and not as itemized expenses.  Despite that fact, she writes to KEYE that all of her campaign expenditures are fully disclosed per state law.  Her response left off the fact that an ethics complaint has been filed against her for these abuses and she has failed/refused to correct her reports prior to the March 4 election date!

She states in her response--"I have handled my financial issues like any other family would."  Perhaps if by "family" she means Enron.  I don't know what family she grew up in, but as a kid, my parents weren't being served with lawsuits for failure to pay other business and the government monies owed.

The best line, however, was--"I want to stress that what happened with my personal business had no impact on my commitment to public service."  Perhaps she should invert that and discuss what impact her "public service" has had on her personal business.  That's what her constituents and the public want to know.  As the barber said, "represent me correctly."

It's time to get out and vote for Brian Thompson and bring real representation back to the people of HD46.

that's all it ever is with Rep. Dukes.  Let's give that barber and all of District 46 what they need, to be represented correctly by helping Brian Thompson get elected.

In the statesman article today this is what she said

Dukes blamed her workload during the 2005 legislative session, plus three special sessions over the next 12 months, for the problems in her business.

Dukes, who's served in the Legislature since 1995, said her firm over that time has shrunk from 10 employees to just her.

"I work hourly," she said. "If I'm not working, I'm not getting paid."

She said her business fell off during the 2005 legislative session as she focused on her legislative duties.

She said she fell further behind as the governor called three special sessions over the next year.

"My business took a major hit," she said. "Every time we went into session, it hit me again.

So if her working in the legislature means that she can't handle any other responsibilities in life, because she doesn't get paid , well thats just one more reason for her step down. By the way, she was in France for one of those special sessions
