Texas Superdelegate Watch: Who's Endorsed Who

by: Phillip Martin

Sat Feb 16, 2008 at 03:00 PM CST

Here is a list of all of the Texas Superdelegates, and who has endorsed who. Thanks to the blog 2008 Democratic Convention Watch and the Austin American-Statesman for most of these -- we've sourced every Superdelegate endorsement that we can.

One other key point to remember -- these are just endorsements, not official votes. No Superdelegate votes count until the actual day of voting at the DNC Convention, and Superdelegates may switch their endorsements between candidates, as we saw recently this past week.

This post -- as is most of our other TX primary resource posts -- has a permanent link in the box on the top-right corner of the site. Be sure to check back regularly, as we update this post and all of our resources for everything you need to know about the Texas primary.

Chet Edwards (0.00 / 0)
i heard Chet Edwards is going to endorse obama some time next week.

Additional Superdelegate Preferences (0.00 / 0)
Sen. Eliot Shapleigh (29th Dist.) has endorsed Senator Clinton.  Both he and Congressman Reyes announced her El Paso rally at a press conference prior to that event.

Texas Representative Norma Chavez (Dist. 76) publicly supports Senator Obama.

The only documentation I have for that is here, and here.

That second link, to today's El Paso Times, reports on a recent poll taken of Democratic voters where here in EP, we're about 30/30/30 Clinton, Obama, Undecided.  Not bad for Obama, considering there are no announced visits planned and our "leaders" are overwhelmingly for Clinton.

state legislators not Superdelegates (0.00 / 0)
State Senators and State Representatives are not superdelegates. Not unless they're also something else, like DNC members. Al Edwards would have been in both catagories back when he was a member of the state House, but only because he was a DNC member, not because he was a state legislator. I can't think of any state legislators who will be superdelegates this time. Even though Senator Van de Putte will preside over some of the proceedings in Denver as co-chair of the convention, she will still not get a vote unless elected through the normal delegate selection process in Texas as a delegate, but even as convention co-chair she would still not be a superdelegate. When Ann Richards chaired the 1992 Democratic National Convention in New York, she was indeed also a superdelegate, but that's because all Democratic governors are superdelegates.

not 2 add-ons (0.00 / 0)
Phil, there are actually 3 add-ons yet unnamed, not 2. In years past they've been Party stalwarts who have worked long and hard for Democrats over the years. I believe Rosa Walker has been named as one before (after she left the DNC). They are nominated and voted on by the State Convention.

Huh (0.00 / 0)
When I looked everything up, David Hardt (the last unpledged Superdelegate in my rundown in this post) was listed as an add-on already. I know there are normally 3, but I'd assumed -- since he already had that by his name -- that he'd already been named one. I'll try to figure it out somehow today.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

Don't think Hardt's an add-on (0.00 / 0)
To my knowledge, Hardt is on the DNC as a representative of Young Democrats of America, and is therefore a regular superdelegate, not an add-on. I'm curious what information you have that shows him as an add-on. Thanks. Matt from 2008 Democratic Convention Watch.

From the Statesman (0.00 / 0)
He was listed in the Austin American-Statesman as an add on.

I've got a call into a couple of folks to figure it out...

I think the Austin American-Statesman has it wrong (0.00 / 0)
It also has Linda Chanvez-Johnson as an add-on. According to the official list from the DNC, both are regular supers.

I would note, though, that the article says Hardt is voting for Clinton.

And an article today, has Slagle for Clinton. We'll be updating our list at 2008 DCW to reflect this changes.

Thanks (0.00 / 0)
Appreciate the heads up on Slagle's article -- I knew he was, just wanted something official to verify it.

K, I think I'm all straight. Thanks again for being such a great resource!

What's up with David Hardt? (0.00 / 0)
David Hardt has the privelege of being a Superdelegate by virtue of being president of Young Democrats of America.  So why isn't he representing his constituency? Walking into the Obama caucus at the State Convention and it'll be a sea of under 35's while the Hillary caucus will look alot like Bob Slagle.  If Hardt claims to represent Democratic youth he needs to actually start doing so or move aside and let someone else more in touch with the pulse of Young Democrats.

ok... (0.00 / 0)
so I guess that means Ted Kennedy and John Kerry should pledge Hillary because they're old and she won Massachusetts?

[ Parent ]
You don't get it (0.00 / 0)
Ted Kennedy is not the president of "Irish Geezer Democrats of Massachusetts". If he was, and the Irish Geezer Democrats in that state were 100% for Mike Gravel, I would expect Ted Kennedy to be representing his constituency and support Mike Gravel.  Otherwise he's not doing the job he was elected to do.

David Hardt is president of the "Young Democrats of America". I expect him to respresent the constituency YDA claims to represent, Democrats under 35, who overwhelmingly support Obama.  David Hardt needs to step aside as YDA president because he is fundamentally out-of-touch with the candidate preference of the very people his organization purports to represent.

[ Parent ]
What a crock (0.00 / 0)
I know David Hardt and while I don't agree with him on everything I know he is a great YDA President. If you don't like his decision then don't vote for him for re-election as President.

Houston superdelegate switches support to Obama

AUSTIN - Democratic superdelegate and state Rep. Senfronia Thompson, of Houston, defected from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign Wednesday and joined a growing list of superdelegates to endorse Sen. Barack Obama for president, according to his campaign.

"I'm honored to have earned the support of Representative Thompson and am pleased that she'll play an important role in advancing our grassroots movement for change in Houston and across Texas," Obama said in a statement. "Throughout her three decades in the Legislature, she's been a tireless advocate for working families and when I'm president we'll work together to put the American dream within reach of every child in Texas and across our country."

Thompson, one of the longest serving Democrats in the state House, is one of the party insiders who, as a superdelegate, help choose the Democratic nominee at the national convention this summer in Denver.

NO LONGER UNCOMMITTED:

From the Texas Cable News 2/20/08

"While officially he (David Hardt) said he is uncommitted, he said he will vote eventually for Clinton"
