Obama Campaign Matching Clinton's $5 Million Contribution

by: Phillip Martin

Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 07:39 PM CST

9pm EST Update: Obama has raised $4,673,457.

9:30pm EST Update: Obama has raised $4,956,525

Senator Clinton has donated $5 million to her own campaign...and since the polls closed last night, Senator Obama has almost matched that total already. As of 8:30pm EST, the campaign has raised $4,391,686 of their own dollars from contributors.

First, Clinton's side. From CNN:

"I loaned the campaign $5 million dollars from my money," she said at a press conference at her Arlington, Virginia headquarters. "I loaned it because I believe in this campaign and I think the results last night proved the wisdom of my investment."...

The news comes days after Barack Obama's campaign announced it had raised $32 million in January alone. Clinton campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe later said the Clinton campaign raised less than half that in the same period - about $13.5 million. The $5 million Clinton loaned to herself was in addition to the $13.5 million she raised.

Senator Obama sent out an e-mail an hour ago asking contributors to match Clinton:
Just two weeks ago we were behind by double-digits in many of the states that voted yesterday, but Barack won 13 states to 8 states for Hillary Clinton, with one state (New Mexico) still counting votes.

This is an enormous victory, and it's all thanks to you.

We won yesterday because thousands upon thousands of individual supporters canvassed their neighborhoods, talked to their neighbors and friends, and made phone calls to remind their fellow supporters to get out the vote.

If you want to help Obama match Clinton's contribution, donate to Obama online. Contribute to Clinton online if you want to help her catch up to Obama in the coming weeks before Texas.

Fundraising power (0.00 / 0)
Obama's fundraising power is amazing. $32mil and 250,000 donors in a single month, a total of 650,000 donors altogether, and almost $5mil in a single day. That's impressive.

Is their any info about people who are giving for the first time to a political campaign. I would think Obama outpaces Clinton in first time givers by leaps and bounds and I think this also translates to large amounts of first time voters and independent voters for Obama.

I'm sure if I'm wrong though, someone will tell me.

Yes (3.00 / 1)
I guess he'll run a lot of ads. I wonder if he'll have Kennedy and Kerry in them. And Oprah. I would think Oprah, for sure. I think it's interesting how everyone forgets that she's a billionaire and owns her own company. That's some kind of lobbyist. But since she's Oprah, no one mentions that.

And I am impressed with the amount of money he has raised. I think he has some really good people running his Internet strategy. Ron Paul has soon good people, too. It's all very impressive, but it shouldn't be the reason we vote for a candidate.

OK (0.00 / 0)
I understand that you're leaning Hillary, and that's great -- lots of folks are, and there are some good reasons to. But Oprah is not a lobbyist. You've just said businessman = lobbyist. Sorry, just don't see that one happening.

Not even that one?

And actually (0.00 / 0)
I think I said billionaire = lobbyist.

I probably should have said OWN = Oprah Winfrey Network = Mega Lobbyist.

Chicago, IL and Silver Spring, MD - Tuesday, January 15, 2008 - In an unprecedented deal, Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications announced plans today to create OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. The new multi-platform media venture will be designed to entertain, inform and inspire people to live their best lives. OWN will debut in 2009 in more than 70 million homes, on what is currently the Discovery Health Channel. The venture will also include the award-winning digital platform, Oprah.com.

All this money...browser can't handle it. ;)

Maybe I used the wrong language. (0.00 / 0)
The large number of first time donors doesn't translate to voters, but it may correlate to a high number of first time voters and independents.

You're right, the ads and fundraising ability are no reason to vote for a candidate. But they can be cues to public sentiment and support, especially the large number of small money donors.

Brilliant move Obama!

They have $5.8 million at 9pm EST.
I can see the press eat this up tomorrow.

Of course (0.00 / 0)
they'll eat it up. It's the narrative they want. It was just slowed down a little by the losses in California and Massachusetts. Obama needed to do this to regain some of that mojo he lost last night.

MA (0.00 / 0)
It was rather dumb that the media made a big deal about MA. Clinton was in the lead there for 14 months, including over the weekend after Senator Kerry/Kennedy endorsed. Their endorsement mattered little for MA voters, mainly for national headlines and press. Also -- lots of the young voters in MA vote out-of-state (all the college kids that didn't grow up here).

Obama was only "slowed down" by a loss in MA b/c no one in the media pays any attention to actual analysis and they didn't know what they were talking about on that one. Sorry -- I live up here in MA now, and even I knew no one was voting for Obama.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

I think you're right (0.00 / 0)
I noticed tonight that the brilliant pundits were blaming the polls for this foul up. Some of the polls that they were all quoting turned out to be way off ~ but only because there were so many undecided voters that they never mentioned in their prognostications. And I think it was pundit Craig Crawford who blamed all the other pundits for being so ignorant. I really enjoy these shows.
