University Democrats & Central Austin Democrats 2008 Primary Endorsements

by: Karl-Thomas Musselman

Mon Jan 28, 2008 at 07:00 AM CST

Here are the results of the University Democrats (UT-Austin) & Central Austin Democrats (CAD) endorsements for Travis County and statewide elections. Those who are underlined have been endorsed by both groups unless otherwise noted.

The margin of the victory's listed below are for University Democrats ONLY as they are made available by Article VII, Section 8 of the University Democrats Constitution. Central Austin Democrats does NOT release the margin of victory except to campaigns as requested.

University Democrats and Central Austin Democrats meet jointly but vote separately. Their endorsement is highly anticipated as one of the most important in Austin because in races where they jointly endorse, candidates can claim the endorsement of the Austin Progressive Coalition (APC) which distributes close to 15,000 yellow doorhangers that list the APC candidates in progressive Austin precincts.

I'm confused... (2.00 / 1)
I thought the University Democrats weren't endorsing anyone in the CD-10 race?  Has that endorsement been confirmed?

Re: I'm Confused... (2.50 / 2)
The University Democrats endorsed Dan Grant as listed with 80% of the vote. I was never aware of any intention of not endorsing in that race as both candidates have campaigned for that endorsement for the past few months.

wow (0.00 / 0)
no votes at all for Nelda Wells Spears?  Did she not show up or something?  Did the UDems compile a list of which candidates showed up?

Nelda was there (0.00 / 0)
but Dukes did not show up. I believe most everyone else was there, save maybe for a couple statewide candidates like McMurrey, Smith, Kelly, Thompson, etc

Mark Thompson (0.00 / 0)
Just to clarify, I was referring to mark Thompson for RR Comm who I don't think was there. Brian Thompson was there.

vote for nelda (0.00 / 0)
pretty sure nelda got votes from CAD - I'm a CAD member and I voted for her, for example. the percentages are just for UDems, but I agree it's kinda misleading! I am sure that nelda did receive support, despite the very sympathetic reception glen received specifically due to the hit-job in the morning's paper.

Glen has put a huge amount of work into UDems (3.00 / 1)
not campaigning, but doing voter registration, getting UDems deputized, etc. etc.  We see him at nearly every meeting and know all the hard work he does.

The endorsement meeting was the first time most of us had ever even seen Nelda, and what we did know about her we didn't like.

Railroad Commissioner Endorsement (0.00 / 0)
Not sure why there's no vote record available. Our official totals were:

Railroad Commissioner:
Henry- 3
Thompson- 1
Hall- 25

-Alex Ferraro, University Democrats Vice President

I updated it (0.00 / 0)
It wasn't included in the totals I was emailed. Thanks for the numbers.

Who funds the Austin Progressive Coalition? (0.00 / 0)
The Austin Progressive Coalition has received about half ($10,000) of its reported campaign funds from one law firm -- Nix, Patterson, & Roach of Dangerfield, Texas - in one check last Monday (see Texas Ethics Commission reports).

Wouldn't you like to know which candidate APC is fronting the money for?  So would I.
