No more backroom deals.

(This race just got more interesting. In short, Glen Maxey explains below why he is choosing to be a candidate for Party Chair at the State Convention in June, but not the special election by the SDEC. This should get fun... - promoted by Karl-Thomas Musselman)

We are less than 90 days from the State Democratic Convention in Fort Worth.

I hope you are part of this process and will be attending your Senate or County Convention on March 25th, and will be a delegate this June at the convention.

At the convention, delegates will have a choice from among several candidates for the position of state party chair.

I have announced as a candidate for that office ( www.MaxeyforChair.com ) and laid out a vision for our party over the coming years. We must open up the process, reinvigorate those who have become disillusioned, and welcome the new energy of folks across Texas who wish for a party that stands for something again.

And for many, their frustration is best expressed by a volunteer who wrote me this week: “I think someone should start a Democratic Party in Texas!!!!!!”

So with the beginnings of a real conversation and discussion about our party’s direction underway, I’m saddened to write this.

Some folks distrust the thousands of Democrats who’ll be coming to Fort Worth so much that they once again have decided to try to take away your right to a real discussion.

The back room deal is alive and well in our party.  The phone lines have been burning up over the last few days, as our current Chair, Mr. Charles Soechting, and “the brokers of the status quo” have been hatching their deal to shut out the delegates once again.

On Tuesday, Chairman Soechting announced his resignation for personal reasons relating to family and business. Sadly, that’s not the reason he expressed in the calls over the last weeks.

As I’ve heard the story repeated by many, he is doing this because the insiders have decided that Glen Maxey might be elected at the State Convention.  I’m flattered that they believe the delegates would elect me.  However, I’m appalled that they think this fast move to give their candidate the “incumbency” advantage won’t be noticed for what it is: a slap in the delegates’ face, yet again.

Dropping out and calling a quick election wasn’t right when Republicans Todd Baxter and Ray Allen resigned from the Legislature and allowed Rick Perry to try to set up a short-lived “incumbency” for their successors.  It smelled when Perry did it, and it smells when our Democratic leadership does it.

In any case, their plan was not for Glen Maxey to be the person elected by the 63 members of State Democratic Executive Committee at this hastily called meeting.

So, just for the record, I wanted you all to know that I won’t seek the temporary chairmanship for the 49 days until a permanent chair will be elected by the people of the Texas Democratic Party.

I’ll continue to take my case to the duly elected delegates who are entrusted by state law and by the rules of this party to make this decision.

I urge you to talk to your SDEC members about this backroom deal.
Ask them to support allowing the delegates to make this decision as the law and the rules suggest.

Instead of calling a special election 49 days before the Convention, Mr. Soechting could just as easily turn over the Chair to our first Vice Chair, Ms. Hadnot..  While he has the power to call the meeting to do the insider deal, he also has the ability to trust the judgment of Texas Democrats and allow the delegates to lead on this important decision.

I wish Mr. Soechting well in his future endeavors.

But under a Glen Maxey chairmanship, there will be no more backroom deals.

Glen Maxey

Candidate for State Party Chair at the June Convention

P.S.  The SDEC will meet this Saturday, March 18th in San Marcos.  If you wish to contact your members before the meeting, their contact information is listed at:

http://www.txdemocrats.org/about/leadership/sdec/

P.S.S.  I  will not be able to attend Saturday’s SDEC meeting.  My closest friend and a longtime Democratic leader, Erma Faye Jefferson passed away this week.  Services are at 11:00 am at Aldersgate Church, 2201 Earl Rudder, College Station. March 18th, 2006.

I'll jump in an make a first comment. Let's make this a bit nicer thread than the last one on the TDP Chair topic.  I think that's possible.  Oh, and I already have a bet with a friend as to how many comments this will go to.  I said 38, they said 50-something. I just hope we're not embarassed and it's like 6.

K-T:

Will you give Boyd Richie and Charles U-J the opportunity for a featured post?

I think they each ought to have the chance to respond, if they so desire.

his blog (0.00 / 0)
Contrary to what you may think, this is KT's blog and actually he can let post whomever he wishes to let post. If Boyd, Jethro, and Granny dont get to post a statement, then too bad.

Wait.. (0.00 / 0)
We're talking about which leader will be more effective--yet the only one with a web site, with blog communications, with a grassroots network and a rapid response is Maxey. This top-down scheming hits in the morning, and by evening, there is a response from Glen. Wait, doesn't that mean he would be bad for the Party?

Perhaps there haven't been any blogs from other candidates promoted because they haven't written any. I wonder if they even have user accounts at BOR.

[ Parent ]
Maxey's rapid response system? (0.00 / 0)
If Maxey has his own rapid response system, why did he have to use this blog to get his word out?  Why not use his own system?

[ Parent ]
actually (0.00 / 0)
He did email everyone. I would assume since this is KT's blog, that KT decided to post it again. Why dont you all start some Richie and Urbina for chair websites?

This is 2006, not 1986. So candidates who do not know how to use a computer will just have to suffer and hang out at the ice cream socials and bake sales.

not the point (0.00 / 0)
I'm well aware that this is K-T's blog.

The question is simply whether K-T will allow other other candidates access to a featured post, or not.

If not, that's fine -- it's his choice to make.  But the question is a fair one to ask, and for now it stands unanswered.

[ Parent ]
I'm sure (3.00 / 1)
I'm sure that K-T would.

But here's an idea--maybe if the other candidates took part in the netroots, maybe if they already had user accounts, maybe if they already had relationships with bloggers...

..then JayRo wouldn't have to ask for them.

Maybe as leaders, they could register for an account, then post a blog, then send K-T an email and ask him to promote it. His contact info is on the site.

Or, maybe they could have surrogates do it.

[ Parent ]
i think that is a fair question, AND (0.00 / 0)
turn-about is fair-play, and i am all for open debate, so:

jayro, are you going to lobby boyd richie, c.u-j or anyone else's supporters to disseminate maxeyforchair materials?

if k-t should decide to pretend temporarily that BOR is a public channel and all get equal play, i think it would go a long way for you to pledge to lobby for equal access from whatever mechanism boyd/c.u-j/?? supporters use to promote their candidacy to promote maxey's candidacy.

fair enough?

-my comments at BOR are mine, and do not represent anything official from LFT.

[ Parent ]
maybe i'm wrong, but... (0.00 / 0)
I thought K-T does make the claim that everybody gets a fair shake at BOR.  (Think about his post after the primary and his own support of Gammage).

But If K-T's choice is that the site will be used openly and directly to support Maxey for chair, that's fine by me.  I just honestly thought that BOR was a place where every Democrat has a chance to make their voice heard.  That's why I come here, at least.

If K-T wants to make clear that Richie or U-J supporters and their views are not welcome on BOR, and that those two candidates aren't either, then like I say, it's his choice to make.  And if he does so, then y'all should expect Richie and U-J supporters to have the same attitude towards Maxey and his supporters.  Like you say, turnabout is fair play.

I for one will leave this line of thought alone until we have an answer from K-T.  I think that's the fair thing to do.

And for the record, I'm not a Richie surrogate.  My opinions/questions/etc are mine and mine only.  I'm not speaking on behalf of anybody else.

[ Parent ]
Why... (0.00 / 0)
...are you being so aggressive. Last time I checked KT hasn't responded to you or anyone else yet.

Looking at just the Gov race, there were comments and diaries and posts for both Gammage and Bell. What makes you think that isn't allowed.

It is easy to sign up for an account, it is easy to write a diary, and it is easy to get it recommended.

Just start writing and stop complaining so much. There are really easy solutions to your questions.

i really didnt intend it as such. you were asking a favor of someone, so i was asking a favor of you.

i am sure you recognize you are sort of asking k-t to help the candidate he probably doesnt support. and like i said, i think its totally fine, and for the greater good for you to ask him that favor.

but you CAN chime in on your committment or not to do that favor i ask of you, regardless of K-T's response.

You gave a good answer to my question.  No hard feelings on my part.

hey (0.00 / 0)
I just woke up so don't take my lack of commenting as anything (that goes for everyone).

JayRo, I'd like it if any other candidates posted.  Glen registered his own account, and when I saw that he had put it up here, I promoted that instead of creating a new entry from the e-mail that landed in my inbox.  I'm a blogger, I like to save my time.

It would be very helpful to the debate if we had information on other candidates. As I come across that (and people have e-mailed me some things) I'll post on that (since I havn't seen any other candidates go ahead and post it themselves).

With the chair's race, it is my plan and purpose to cover it. And just as we have in the past, I may have personal opinions on races, and will from time to time defend those down in the comment threads, I am never going to disallow other writers or users from promoting a different candidate or giving reasons why they would make a better chair.  When it devolves into personal attacks on any candidate (which have been mostly Maxey related at this point for obvious reasons), I'll try to intervene, but I'm not around 100% of the time to moderate. That's where all the users come in.

Is everyone chill with that? Sheesh, I sleep for 9 hours and... :)

I love it! I love it!
This is great! We are actually going to have a party that works!

Is that Kinky off frame? (3.00 / 1)
Kinky's involved in this back room deal!  WTF?

Who said this off presidential year election was going to be boring.  We had a primary challenge in the Governor's race, a Lt. Governor's race that's gone into a runoff.  A perennial candidate clown (not the dead dancer) push a very good candidate for US Senator into a runoff.  We stole HD48 from the republicans in a special election.  James Leininger is pitting one republican against another, bankrolling the purchase of the Texas Legislature with his personal finance stash.  We'll have at least a three way race for Governor in November. Kent Grusendorf lost his seat at the Lege. Cheney shot a 78 year old republican lawyer in the face. Bush' poll numbers are so far down the toilet they're in China. This is the year Tom DeLay goes down in flames at the ballot box.  And the fight for the soul of the Democratic party is in full swing.  Man does Texas politics rock or what?  Why it's a blood sport.  Let the betting begin.

I'm there .... (0.00 / 0)
I made it to the County Convention in a week or so and I'll try my damndest to be in Fort Worth come June. Let's really shake things up and make the "insiders prediction" come true, let's elect Maxey.

Soechting quitting early is NOT (0.00 / 0)
a surprise, we knew this last November.  And the "annointing" was expected, too.  Glen Maxey entering the race was the one thing I was not sure of, but have been hoping for since last November.  We need to do something different because we need to win some important races this November if we are to hold the line, which is getting weaker by the day.

Gawd, I am getting cranky, and real sick of losing.  All I want to do is pull the suits out of the way, throw 'em some bottled water, and git the rag-tag army movin' down the road, with their pitchforks, keyboards, bicycles, bullhorns and will to win all workin' together to win us some seats.  And don't fergit us old farts can fight, too, even from our wheelchairs with ammonia in our squirtguns.

"....to the People..." (0.00 / 0)
A nice, catchy phrase, as implied above, "The People's Party"...kinda like what the Dems want to turn Texas into- "The People's Republic of Texas"...how does that sound, comrades? ..By the way, when's the next MoveOn.org MeetUp event? Is it BYOC (Bring Your Own Cannibis)? LOL

Just because Glen isn't actively seeking the job at the March 18 meeting doesn't mean that SDEC members can't cast a vote for him. We should all get in touch with our reps to the SDEC and ask them to oppose this power grab by voting for Glen.

One better (0.00 / 0)
I think that is a great idea, but don't forget to go to your senate/county convention and your state convention.

Activists and loyal party members are given a rare opportunity to vote on resolutions that will shape the party, vote for SDEC members that represent them, and vote for a state chair.

At the state convention you also get to caucus with people on the issues that are the most important to you.

Make sure you contact your SDEC member about supporting the State Party Chair that you want them to support, but no matter what, voice your own opinion in June!

Fudd's first law of opposition: Push something hard enough and it will fall over.

[ Parent ]
Okay, (0.00 / 0)
My question is, if Mr. Soechting is wary that Mr. Maxey might be elected party chair, why is he worried? as in why doesen't he want this person to be party chair?

Several reasons... (0.00 / 0)
...not the least of which can be directly attributed to the tightly knit, small circle of individuals who control the party and the operations, who are quite frightened at the prospect of someone who will involve the masses.

There's the tip of the iceberg for you.

(For more reference, look up Dean / DLC etc., or read any of the tactics used by McAulliffe and company when Dean was trying to get elected...we've already seen the anti-Dean movement try to derail him for DNC, and folks, get ready for the anti-Maxey movement.)

The problem is that trying to stop someone who has worked for 35 years in Texas politics across the board on all levels who has immense grassroots support, and would undoubtedly pick up massive support once certain programs were implemented, is incredibly difficult when you do not have the same support from PEOPLE. From voting delegates. It's kind of like trying to build an army you don't have, so you play games and shenanigans.

I don't know what there is to be afraid of--but what I do know is that the people and the delegates of the Texas Democratic Party should make the decision based on the candidate's merits. It should be voted on at the state convention. If Boyd can win the race at the convention, more power to him. But it should speak to the statewide support for Maxey that the power brokers have to take these steps.

[ Parent ]
Interesting, (0.00 / 0)
So it has nothing to do with Mr. Maxey himself, than a desire to keep their kingmaker status?

Well (3.00 / 1)
I cannot speak to that really, obviously. But it is what it reeks of to me. Maxey has his flaws--but who doesn't?

Here is a guy who has a vision for the future, and I feel that the flaws he may have, do not offset the qualities he has.

Here is a guy who wants the public and the Texas Democrats across the state to have access, and to lend his ear to ideas. He has the ability to recognize flaws and to work on them. The other day he and I were talking and he said "So apparently I can be pretty rude!" and I said yes Glen, at times you can be. He responded with "Well, it's just that I am not that good at small talk. It's unintentional. But I'll work on it."

On the Daily Show or maybe it was Real Time the other night they were talking about how John Edwards has been the first and only Dem to admit his vote on Iraq was wrong. And how cool it was, how refreshing that there was someone who could admit mistakes and work to fix them.

This is yet another aspect about Maxey that I am a big fan of. Let's face it--whether you support Maxey or not, there have been the backroom deals going on for quite some time. There has been a lack of quality tools available to locals for a long time. There has been a lack of money for a long time. Why not give someone else a shot? Worst case scenario, they flop, and the delegates vote them out next time around.

But isn't it worth the shot?

Of course, the party would be run in the mode that the party is run. The SDEC would play a major role, staff would play a major role, etc., only the difference would be that the public would be able to communicate and actually make things happen instead of getting lip service all the time.

JayRo, as a field director I would imagine you would be more inclined to getting tools put in place that would help you in your races like Hubener's as opposed to battling against them.

I would like to talk to you so we can at least agree to disagree.

Feel free to shoot me an email if you'd like. nick@democracyfortexas.org.

Thanks!

[ Parent ]
Btw.. (0.00 / 0)
Glen has served as a precinct chair in Brazos County.

So I would imagine he has at least an inkling of how things go there.

I was speaking with a field person for Doggett who said that in the smaller counties between the south tip of TX and Austin, that there were many doors they knocked on who couldn't believe a Democrat was knocking on their door, because they had never seen one.

I feel our 40% is a base. Ten points is not that crazy, even in a conservative state, if you can put the right tools out there. I know that the ad that Chet Edwards put out about the CHIPs program and Wolgehmuth (sp.?)'s oppo to it was a major key in his victory.

I have a TON of respect for Chet Edwards. To represent that conservative district, to know how to win there, these are tools we need to learn across the state. Now imagine if there were these tools available from the state to the local party that could help assist in that a ton?

Dean himself when he speaks of the 50 state strategy tells people in Alabama--if you're at a 35% DPI, don't focus on winning just yet. Focus on hitting 40%. Build your party locally. Recruit candidates to run for JP and Constable and all these local offices, so they can speak on behalf of the party. Then try to hit 45%. Then try to hit 51%.

It's all about building, man.

[ Parent ]
so where's the backroom... (0.00 / 0)
...other than in this rather obvious attempt to stir up Glen's supporters, who didn't seem to overrun the precinct conventions? And that's cool, but before anyone gets holier than thou, please undersatnd this is just a newer variation of inside baseball.

Look, Soechting's leaving before June. He's given his reasons and we can choose to believe them or not, but no rules have been broken, and there is always an election at every convention.

Incumbency can be a double-edged sword for whomever becomes Chair in the interim before the convention. But if we want to win this fall, we can't afford to waste that six or seven weeks. The Party has some important work to do, and I would hate to see that negated by my fellow Democrats spitefully tossing hand grenades at each other instead of the bad guys.

I have only one measure for a Chair: can that person bring us all together to win, understanding the job is bigger than any one person?  And so far, I'm reading very little here about the Chair's responsibility to get ALL the talented players on the same team and raise some money so they can work effectively. Absent that ability, the math won't add up to a Democratic win.

Finally, I'd like to add one footnote. Whether you knew her or not, Glen's friend Erma Jefferson passed away this week. She was an extraordinary human being and a great Democrat. She was a friend to many of us. Remember her, and remember that there are a lot of people who are for Glen and others who respect him but are not supporting his candidacy. But there are good people on both sides of this race who share an honest and passionate desire to elect more Democrats. The reason we feel that way isn't about all this inside baseball - it's because winning elections is the only way we can affect policy to benefit the lives of people who will never go to a convention, much less any backroom.

Erma Jefferson (0.00 / 0)
Glen is actually delivering her eulogy at the funeral.

When you say the "precinct conventions weren't overrun by Maxey supporters", I am not sure where you are getting that info. I can tel you for sure that there was not a single Richie or Urbina supporter at mine. So should I make the statement that the precinct conventionS weren't overrun by their supporters? For all I know, across the state there are tons of their supporters. But I also know there have been thousands of emails coming in to Glen as well.

[ Parent ]
And yet... (0.00 / 0)
...there are never comments about Glen's vision. There are never comments about his plan. He has outlined so many facets of what he would do for the party...

[ Parent ]
Anyone can have fantasies (0.00 / 0)
That's why Maxey's vision is unimpressive.  The question is, can you make your fantasies becomes reality?  As in last fall's amendment ... Maxey's team went 25-75 on that one, not too impressive.

The point is not did he manage a winning campaign, but did he pick the losing side to campaign for?  I say he did.  So the bigger question becomes, when you get him outside the comfort zone of his personal community, can he relate to larger areas with greater cultural diversity -- diversity of the type that he has no stomach for?  Can he see outside the box he lives in?

This is a question not just for Maxey but for lib Tex Dems in general.  Just like the Bushies, LTDs have great difficulty seeing beyond the absolute certainty of their own positions.  Maxey is a prime example of this.

It showed to a painful degree in last fall's campaign.  Maxey sent out an e-mail appeal that was almost difficult to read, it was so personal.  He appealed to people to support his opposition to the marrigage amendment because of dire personal circumstances of his own -- circumstances that would be completely unchanged by the amendment, regardless of whether it passed or failed.

Leadership is not about asking people to support a position for our own personal reasons.  Leadership is about inducing people to take positions larger than ourselves, larger than the immediacy of our current circumstances, to see a larger picture.  Maxey might have made his appeal on that basis; instead he humiliated himself by publicly displaying his personal life.

Is that really what the TDP needs in a leader?  Is that really someone who will spark a grassroots uprising?

There is no reason to think so.  I've been a computer technologist for almost three decades, and there is no evidence that computer technologies improve processes unless a fundamental attitude adjustment takes place as well.  Are you ready to adjust your attitude?  Is Maxey?

I see no evidence for that, either.

[ Parent ]
Well, the funny thing is... (3.00 / 1)
that what you call "unimpressive", I feel a lot more people would call incredible.

But I am sure that you think that Boyd's ideas for the party are so much better.

[ Parent ]
That wasn't the question (0.00 / 0)
I was talking about YOUR attitude, the attitude of each individual out here -- not the party as a whole.  To say "change the party" is a way of ignoring our own culpability in perpetuating its losing ways.  To claim any less is to say you are not part of TDP.

To change the party you must change yourself first.  You are part of the problem!  I was, too, until I took several steps back and saw the landscape as most people do.  Now I understand that the best way for me to change the world is to live righteously.

"The point is not did he manage a winning campaign, but did he pick the losing side to campaign for?" (0.00 / 0)
i am certainly not into whatever i am into to win, i am into it to do the right thing. not to go all extreme but simply to make a point: lets say the 1860's civil war is on right now and lets say its fundamentally about states right to choose slavery, you are choosing sides based on what, if not the fact that slavery is wrong? that one side is more likely to win?

also:
"Just like the Bushies, LTDs have great difficulty seeing beyond the absolute certainty of their own positions." Dropping the 'absolute' because extreme adjectives rarely characterize most people, i think its a good thing to believe what you believe, and believe it firmly. i can see way beyond my beliefs (i read redstate.com every day as much as i read BOR), but a good person HAS to make value judgements, and then advocate for those beliefs. or, dont advocate and let others make the moves that determine the world.

also, not to get all logical, but "humiliated himself by publicly displaying his personal life" strikes me as an impossible statement. as in no one but the humilatee (glen) gets to make that call. you see humilation, i see a guy going all the way out on the limb, past the limb, to try to make a connection. tactically or strategically it might not have been your choice, but to personalize it to 'humiliation' is senseless.

Imagine Fairness... (3.00 / 2)
I posted this (a bit late in the comments though) on the "Soechting Resigns" thread earlier, but I think it merits a repost here.  Pay particular attention to the fact that WE DO HAVE RECOURSE should the SDEC actually appoint one of the candidates (ANY one of the candidates) to the interim office....

Now suppose, just suppose for a moment that the SDEC did NOT act in the interests of any one particular candidate -- even one of their own -- in the interests of ensuring that a fair process really does take place in June.  Suppose instead that on April 22, they appoint a 7-week chair who has NO interest whatsoever in holding the job permanently.... someone to steer the Party into the convention and no further.  NOW that would be an SDEC worth re-electing.  People with the integrity to give us a true INTERIM chair knowing a real election is less than two months away.

I'd start keeping track of who votes how on April 22, and if the SDEC does appoint one of the candidates to the interim job, be prepared to elect new SDEC members at your Senate District caucus at the state convention.  IIRC, the State Chair also can be REMOVED from office by a two-thirds vote of the SDEC... so an SDEC that truly belongs to the people could theoretically undo any double-dealing by their predecessors.

Nick, I know how close Erma and Glen are, and extremely close would be an inadequate description. My reference to her was simply meant as an appopriate remembrance about why we all do this instead of scheming for power and self-enrichment. It was meant to remind us  about the more important things that bring us together.

Still though... (0.00 / 0)
the line about scheming for power I do not believe applies to Glen. Yes, he is a consultant, yes, he has his own interests and career and life to think of, who doesn't, but the difference between Glen and the typical consultants is that he does everything possible to teach and mentor young people like myself and K-T to bring the Democratic Party back in Texas.

I think Glen is scheming for change and a real Democratic Party.

for God's sake, chill Nick... (0.00 / 0)
The line about "scheming for power" had nothing to with a party Chair race or any D Chair candidate, it was simply about how Democrats care wbout all the people compared to R's who scheme for power. And that's my larger point: quit seeing all this through our internal fight and think about D vs. R - it's about the people, not a Chair's race. Please back off, quit being defensive, and remember our friends who taught us how to fight the real enemy, and more importantly, WIN.

Duly noted. (0.00 / 0)
Sorry. Duly noted.

I just get defensive when people attack a good friend and one of the most if not the most competent Democratic leader in the state.

Not you necessarily.

I am SO sick of the NNN example. Glen has done SO much more for the state than that campaign, and yet it seems to be the only "failure" that any opposition can talk about. A gay marriage ban in Texas.

Can I just say, we don't have any statewide DEMOCRATS? So what makes anyone think we would be able to WIN a campaign based on something that is so obviously a huge mega church Republican wedge issue? It gets so tiresome.

To whom... (0.00 / 0)
did this e-mail go out too?

I received it in my inbox and am curious as to how Maxey's campaign got my e-mail address...

not sure (0.00 / 0)
You can always write or call Glen about it. I'd be happy to give you the info.  I'd imagine it's some combination of lists or past supporter e-mails.  I know in Travis County from time to time, I'll get action e-mails from Glen about current tasks for immediate campaigns (like the 48 special election) which are to the point.

Let me know if you need his info. Or if you can tell me what lists BR or CU-J is using either. :)

Party Chair Questionnaire (0.00 / 0)
South Texas Chisme has a short questionnaire for the party chair candidates.  I hope that you will take the time to answer it.

We at STC would love to be able to compare the answers from all of the candidates.

Thanks.

Speaking of statewide. . . (0.00 / 0)
How does anyone running for State Chair propose to win statewide elections?

I'm hearing a whole lot about "organizing," but I hear nothing about "persuading."

And frankly, I don't see the Dean way as persuading anyone.  Sure, it is good tool to organize and fire up the choir, but I'd rather consentrate on winning elections where we can.

This isn't meant to be offensive, but really more questioning of a method: did Dean win a single election outside of Vermont?  Did he persuade many voters, or did he rally the like minded in an innovative, netroots method?

I want my party chair to 1) help raise resources (not just money) for the party 2) be a persuasive voice representing Democrats across Texas 3) above all, be pragmatic.

All the idealism in the world doesn't matter if you don't win.  That may sound harsh, but I believe Texas is too important to just argue over, it must be fought for . . . and I want us to win it back.

From Glen's announcement: (0.00 / 0)
* I believe we can build a stronger State Democratic Party by creating the tools for good people to run for local offices like Constable, Justice of the Peace, and County Commissioner. We have to focus on winning local races at the county level if we ever want to win races statewide. To do so, these folks need two-way access to good data.

You can find this and a comment on nearly each facet of a good Chair by clicking here.

57, k-t.

Those Darn Backrooms... (0.00 / 0)
They really are frustrating.

I keep remembering this backroom at the last State Convention where a few people decided who would get to go to the National Convention as delegates and who would not.

Anyone remember who was in that room?

Hmmm, if only I could remember...

backrooms (0.00 / 0)
Not sure what you are insinuating there David if you even are.

I know I was elected out of my Senate District with a lot of hard work campaigning for 3 weeks before the convention, with phone calls, post cards, letters, and e-mails, including campaigning at the convention. It's how I got 5 people to drop out, and ended up winning my SD 24's vote with 80%.

If you are referring to the nominations committee at the state convention, maybe that.  But I thought that was elected by each of the SDs and I remember standing in there as they sweat through filling at large seats, including sending a transgender female veteran hispanic as a delegate, which doesn't exactly strike me as the typical kind of 'back room' sort of choice.
