Rep. Robby Cook Will Not Run Again in 2008

by: Phillip Martin

Tue Nov 13, 2007 at 04:55 PM CST

From Quorum:
"I am announcing that I will not seek reelection to the Texas House of Representatives for District 17. It has been a true honor, privilege and pleasure to have served in the Texas House for the last 6 terms. I feel like my office has accomplished many of the goals that we had set when I first ran for election. It's time now for me to spend more time on the farm and with family.

"I wish my colleagues success in the upcoming legislative session and future sessions as they continue to grapple with the issues of our rapidly growing State. My constituency can rest assured that my staff and I will continue to serve them and whatever needs they may have through the end of my current term."

The article goes on to note that Rep. Cook wanted to get back to his family farm roots, and had never thought to be a career politician. We know of no immediate candidate who will step in and run -- for Democrats or Republicans -- but we imagine more news will come soon. Stay tuned.

Awfully close to the filing deadline (0.00 / 0)
I respect his decision, but wish he could have made it a bit earlier.  The filing period opens in less than three weeks.  I hope we've got folks primed and ready to go already...

Good luck in your retirement, Rep. Cook.

Does Ankrum reside here in 17?
Kleinschidt is licking his chops about now. Dammit.

Who, what, when, and where? (0.00 / 0)
Is that so hard to do?

Where the heck is District 1?
Is the incumbent a Repub or a Democrat?

This is the website for the Texas House of Representatives.  This is the directory for all of the Representatives.  This is the website for Representative Cook.  This is his biography.  This is the election breakdown of his district from 2006.  This (pdf) is a map of the district.  All of that information was easily accessed by going to the House website.  Another useful tool is a website called Google

Don't Assume Reader Knows

What is so hard about a knowledgeable writer sharing basic info with his readers? What exactly is wrong with following the time-tested rule Who, What, Where and When? Why leave out Where, and Why leave out Who Repub/Dem? Do you really think I should have to Google to read a simple blog? A reporter has basic responsiblities to the reader, and they were not met in that post. If the basic info was so easily accessible, as you note, why was it not included?

At least I had the courtesy to point out the shortcoming so it could be remedied, sooner or later. You did not remedy the oversight.

You suggest that I leave this site to do the reporter's work myself! Well, I probably do spend too much time on the site -- and spend too much money on the likes of Sid Sklar and Rick Noriega when urged on by writers at this site. But O.K., if you want me to leave and go Google -- goodbye.

No need to go anywhere. I just saw this online, and threw something up real quick. I don't normally put up lots of links, but I probably could have in this post.

Fair point, and I'll work on that for next time.

Now, a very great man once said that some people rob you with a fountain pen.

Ronnie McDonald (0.00 / 0)
Has anyone heard if Ronnie McDonald, Bastrop County Judge, is being courted to make this race?  I just read about him over at Kuff's and he seems like he would be a potentially attractive candidate - have any of you heard about him possibly running?

That's the chatter out here in Bastrop County (0.00 / 0)
Ronnie's a good guy, worked for John Sharp, solid judge, Aggie, well-liked...hard to say with current demographics if his race would be a liability in 17. Robby won by only a few hundred votes over Kleinschmidt in '06, so this will be an uphill battle for us. Not a good district in which to lose an incumbent.
