Reichstadt Out in Democratic Senate Primary

by: Todd Hill

Sun Sep 02, 2007 at 06:24 PM CDT

Rumors are that Emil Reichstadt, one of three declared candidates for the Democratic primary for US Senate, will bow out early this week.

I liked Emil Reichstadt personally.  I've met him a couple of times and he is a very likeable man.  I was never sure of what he could do in this primary but he apparently saw the writing on the wall too and didn't want to ripple the waters.

Instead of pursuing John Cornyn it would appear that the former Army JAG officer is going to take on Republican Dan Branch in HD 108.  I'm very pleased to see he will shift resources and stay in the hunt against Republicans one way or another.

In 2006 Dan Branch was oppossed by openly gay Democrat Jack Borden, who ran basically no campaign at all.  Even with running no campaign he managed 40.42% of the vote in a strong Republican district.

With the resources that Reichstadt can bring to the table in HD 108 I would expect that those numbers would improve dramatically.

I wish Emil Reichstadt and his campaign all the luck in the world.  Give Bush-lite Republican Dan Branch a good run for his money.

Reichstatdt v. Branch (0.00 / 0)
Not so sure 108 really is such a strong Republican district. Perry only beat Bell by a squidge over 1500 votes, and the combined Freidman/Strayhorn "independent thinker" vote was about 8,250.
Interesting numbers: Kinky got 4738 and Branch beat Borden by...4797.
If Emil crafts a strong populist message while bringing out all the D's, he might just be able to pull this one off.

Lean's Republican (0.00 / 0)
I was surprised Todd said that 108 is a strong Republican district too.  I'd say that it's a district that favors Republican district, but it's not a strong Republican district.  Radnofsky got a measly 38.9%, but Moody got a healthy 47.9%.  However these percentages are more than they each got in well-known Tarrant targets like SD 10 (38.3%/47.3%) and HD 96 (37.5%/47.2%).

Definition of Strong (0.00 / 0)
I guess it depends on your definition of strong, and the caliber of candidate.  Moody got 47%...great!  The guy who actually ran against Branch got 40%.  That's a strong Republican lean.

If Reichstadt can be of the Moody-mold, then it's a pick up for certain.  If he is of the Borden-mold, which I doubt he is, then Branch stays put.

The average county wide (0.00 / 0)
DPI in HD 108 was 44.5%.  HD 114, where the average county wide candidate received 39% of the vote, I would call that a Strong Republican but not 108.  Take into account that Dallas County is trending 2% Democratic, plus the higher turnouts expected in a Presidential election, this is winnable with a lot of hard work.

What about Riddle in 150? (0.00 / 0)
Do we have anyone at all that could run against her?  This is really something we should be looking at also.

Shoot. I didnt know he was "in"! (0.00 / 0)

God bless you, Emil (0.00 / 0)
I am really excited about this race.  I always liked Emil even though I knew he didn't stand a chance statewide.  Dan Branch is going down in 2008.  I only wish Emil lived in HD 105 so he could take down Linda Harper-Brown!

Do you have a candidate in 105 yet? (0.00 / 0)

Socially progressive / fiscally conservative. (3.00 / 1)
An interesting note is that HD 108 had one of the highest votes AGAINST the gay marriage constitutional amendment in 2005

Interestingly (3.00 / 1)
Went through some numbers that I did after the campaign and not only did it vote against Prop 2, 58% of the people voted against hate.

It was one of only a handful of state rep districts outside of Austin to defeat the hateful amendment, and it did it with Highland Park on its East flank.

HD 108 is a winnable district if Emil or anyone else goes out and does the hard work of knocking on doors and talking to voters.

Hopefully, Emil will serve as an example to others in the future... (0.00 / 0)
...it made no sense for him to be running for the U.S. Senate; it makes all the sense in the world for him to run against Branch.

A few facts about District 108 (0.00 / 0)
District 108 has several precincts from the old Harryette Ehrhardt 107 district.  If they could be convinced to turn out with larger numbers in November, the Democratic nominee will be elected.

Now that Republicans have finally been defeated in the new 107 that Republicans designed to defeat Harryette, it would only be appropriate for Democrats to defeat Dan Branch, as well.

Branch never delivered the kind of Education Finance Reform demanded by grass roots Republicans in the HPISD, and never can.  (Considering this I don't know how those other districts that receive 'Robin Hood' money ever elected Republicans in the first place.  It seems there's a disconnect of messages with the people there.)

Emil Reichstadt lives in Highland Park and is an impressive speaker.

Recall that Chris Bell is originally from District 108.

Good luck to Emil Reichstadt on becoming my next State Representative.

Message/Position (0.00 / 0)
If these guys don't make their positions clear and get on message fairly soon, they won't defeat anyone.

And if the position/message is not right, oops!

Without drawing from the center we can't win. Period.

HD108 (0.00 / 0)
If knocking on doors and talking to voters was the only thing, then Will Pryor would have done better than the 32% he got in 108.

Dems are doing better in the M streets, and 108 has Oaklawn and Old East Dallas and Swiss ave, but it's still anchored by the Park Cities. Dan has 362k in the bank. It's not going to be easy to take him down. HD101, and 106 will be far less expensive than 108, and better opportunities to win. But I'm glad someone is willing to stick their neck out there and run against Dan.
