Sen. Gallegos Back in Austin to Block Voter ID Bill

This story is absolutely incredible so I'm posted the entire thing from the Houston Chron Blog.  As R.G. Ratliffe reported, "Gallegos says it is worth risking his life to block the bill in memory of his grandmothers."

Ailing state Sen. Mario Gallegos, D-Houston, has a hospital bed set up in the sergeant's office -- about a 100 feet from Gallegos' Senate chamber desk, Monday so that he could help block a contentious voter ID bill from debate.

"I'm hurting. I'm hurting," Gallegos said a few minutes ago as the Senate went into session.

UPDATE: Gallegos speaks in a podcast found here.

Gallegos went through a liver transplant surgery earlier this year and had a follow-up procedure on Friday.

Doctors wanted Gallegos to stay in Houston. But doing so would have given Republicans enough votes to pass a voter identification bill.

Gallegos and every Democrat oppose the legislation, contending that it's part of an orchestrated campaign to suppress voting of low-income and elderly citizens. Gallegos had a blood test taken this morning.

"They could call me back this afternoon," he said.

In the meantime, Sen. Bob Deuell, R-Greenville, is monitoring Gallegos' health. Deuell is a physician.

So sad! (3.00 / 1)
It is really sad that games like this have to be played. The fact that Dewhurst is willing to risk another human beings life over this bill is so pitiful!

We salute Sen. Gallegos! (4.43 / 7)
We were already planning to honor Sen. Gallegos with a special True Courage Award this Thursday. This incredible sacrifice just confirms our conviction that Sen. Gallegos is a real Texas hero.

I called his office and thanked him (4.00 / 2)
He is going way beyond what he needs to do.  That's how important this is to all of us.  Senator Gallegos understands what it really means.  Like he says in the podcast interview - It's for my Grandmothers.  His and all of our grandmothers who should not be disenfranchised.

What a great man

A true Texas hero! (4.33 / 3)
It is inspiring to watch Sen. Gallegos and his colleagues fight for our voting rights. Sen. Gallegos is risking his life to serve his constituents and all Texas citizens. That strength of character is hard to beat.
I was touched by what he said about his grandmothers. My grandmother never had a driver license. But she always voted.

No kidding.  I had no idea he was actually rejecting his new liver.  A transplant is already a serious medical procedure, and obviously the stress of this session is not good for his health.

And yet this Senator stands up against this roadblock bill.  He is simply amazing.

AAS article 5/22/07

Gallegos legislating from bed near Senate despite warnings from his transplant doctors.

Despite a growing threat that his body will reject a transplanted liver, Sen. Mario Gallegos Jr. said Monday that he was determined to stay in the Senate long enough to block a bill that would require Texas voters to provide identification at the polls.

“If not for voter ID, I wouldn’t be here; that’s how serious the issue is for me,” said Gallegos, D-Houston. “It’s very important for my community that we block this legislation.”

Sen. Mario Gallegos Jr., 56, had a liver transplant in January. His doctors in Houston would rather he be there getting treatment, but he doesn’t want to leave Austin till the voter ID bill is no more. He rests in a bed brought in for him by colleague Bob Deuell. The door at right leads to the Senate chamber.

Hero? (0.00 / 0)
Protecting voting rights? I hardly think so.  And it's not a hospital bed, by the way. A normal bed. But, nice try...

It's sickening that the (D)'s are politicizing Gallegos' attempt to actually do something this session. Since he hasn't been there for, oh I don't know...90% of the votes this session.
